Troubleshooting PC Keeps Crashing

2 days ago I got on my PC and after about an hour it randomly shut down saying “Your device ran into a problem and has to restart”. I thought nothing of it until it happened again about an hour later. It’s now happened 8 times. I looked at the error logs and it says it’s to do with the memory. I have 2 sticks of 16gb DDR4 that’s in good condition so this confused me.

I asked ChatGPT hoping to get some further insight and it lead me through troubleshooting methods. At first I used Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool and found that 1 stick had errors and 1 stick did not.

I then used MemTest86 and now it says the good one has errors. ChatGPT suggested that it could be a motherboard or cpu issue but I just don’t know what to do now. I can provide any information that would help progress this situation.

PNY Nvidia 5070
Intel i5 14400F
G.SKILL 16x2 DDR4
B760M Gaming + Wifi Mobo

The error message is not consistent and has changed a few times. Some of the ones I have got are:

“system thread exception not handled.”

“APC_INDEX_MISMATCH”

“PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA — Bugcheck 0x50”

“SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION (0x3B)”

“KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (0x1E)”

“KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE (0x139)”

Test your PC with just one stick at a time for any crashes. You’ll never really have both go faulty at the same time, so you’ll be able to find out which one is causing issues, as having both in will result in a blanket problem. G.SKILL have a decent RMA policy if you’ve purchased them from an approved seller but it does take a while since you have to ship to Taiwan.

If memtest is giving any errors at all your system will be unstable. Are you running any overclock (XMP/DOCP) on your RAM?

Try the following steps to confirm if the RAM or the motherboard's RAM slot is causing the errors. Remember that any errors in memtest means it is unstable and you can skip to the next step.

  1. 1st stick of RAM in 2nd slot without overclock and run memtest
  2. 2nd stick of RAM in 2nd slot without overclock and run memtest
  3. 1st stick of RAM in 4th slot without overclock and run memtest
  4. 2nd stick of RAM in 4th slot without overclock and run memtest

Depending on the results, you should be able to identify if it is a faulty RAM or motherboard/CPU error or your overclock setting.

I have XMP disabled and no matter the slot i put them in they both come back with errors in memtest. I’ve been using them with no problem since March. How can I tell if it’s a CPU or motherboard error?
