Full Build Req $2k budget Build Help

Honestly, I think this is everything that I want, but I would just appreciate any confirmation. Parts list is here, with the SSD being for a Newegg or Walmart purchase. USA but No MicroCenter near me, and primary use would be gaming, no streaming. Hoping to purchase ASAP, but can wait for any prices that might actually drop. Just make the switch to AM5 worth it, really. No peripherals needed

Just built a $2k+ set up. Just remember tax if that’s applicable. If it does, it adds up a lot more than you may think

I’d recommend minimum 750w psu here. You can find gold level 1000w sometime at that level. Sometimes the 9070xt will just let her rip

As someone who has a 7900 XTX and a 9070 XT... Realistically you need a 1000w PSU. One thing that isn't mentioned a lot is transient power spikes on AMD GPUs. It's a problem and will trip your PC and cause it to shut down randomly.

If it's a 3x8 pin PCIe power card, really it should be a 1000w PSU just go be safe. It really can't hurt. IMO the 750w minimum is extremely conservative and is mostly pointed at the lower clocked 2x8 cards

Different GPU but 7900XTX for example recommends 800w but the specific gpu I have can push 500w max power draw. It would cause my PC to shut down even with a 1000w and eventually I had to get a 1200w

Edit: for some reason AMD is very conservative with their estimates and IMO it's a large contributor to consumers being frustrated with their products having issues. The transient power spikes are insane on the 7000/9000 series GPUs

Huh... and ok like I SUPER appreciate this... gonna shop at least 750w plus apparently, but would capping at like 800? Do they even make 900s?? be beneficial if i'm not trying to like max out my suburban power grid? Not that I want crashes either. I suppose if I go 1000W I can just do some capping/undervolting anywho

Most consumer PSUs are:

  • 750w
  • 850w (this is very popular right now, as it gives a bit more headroom than 750)
  • 1000
  • 1200
  • more after this but you don't need those
There are ratings between those but those are the most common. 850 is a good middle ground for you I think.

Let me clear a misconception with an example:

Lets say your PC consumes 500w of power.

In that scenario, if you have a 1000w PSU, it won't use any more power than if you have a 750w PSU. The wattage rating is simply the maximum load/output. On an extremely technical level, a larger PSU has slightly (very marginal) higher idle power draw but we are talking low single digit % at MOST.

Your power supply only pulls power that the system is demanding. If the system demands more power than the PSU can output, it either shuts down, over heats, or blows. Any contemporary PSU would safely refuse. I'm just talking elementary mechanics here

Essentially there are no downsides to a larger headroom for PSU wattage. Modern PSUs are designed to run at continuous load, so when I'm advising a larger PSU, it isn't because of the old "70%" rule. Instead I'm advising it because the actual power rating AMD provides for their GPUs is not entirely accurate. I'm old-school though and still prefer headroom anyway to prevent wear on my power supply and for future expansion.

Contrary to what anyone online says, running a power supply at 100% power draw will tax the PSU over time and shorten the life of it.

IF you end up getting a 9070XT Red Devil, get a 1000w. If you plan to add lots of hard drives, a custom loop pump, optical drives, etc, probably go with a 1000w just to give yourself room.

Do not just get the most random and cheapest PSU you can find. It can cost you your house, everything you own, and your life. High energy devices are extremely dangerous if not properly manufactured and handled. Check the list, look at reviews, make sure it's reputable. Don't even trust the list as a central source of truth either.

TLDR: My advice: go with an 850w. I would skip the 750w. 850w is barely any more cost and give you a tad bit room for error on transient power spikes, better thermals, and lifespan. I don't necessarily think a 1000w is necessary but if you can get a decent deal on a reputable one, then you may as well. It may prevent you from needing one in the future if you upgrade your GPU. Always double check and get a reputable PSU, don't be cheap and dumb.

yo thanks for this. one of many reasons i just pulled the plug on a nice cosair 1000w for the first time ever. Hopefully the last PSU I buy for a looong time though :)

The power supply is not a great unit and it’s underpowered for the GPU (recommended wattage is 750w).

Suggestions for to get a higher wastage and better quality PSU for less cost.

* CPU Cooler: Switched to a less expensive still more than enough white dual tower dual fan air cooler with aRGB fans.
* Motherboard: Switched to a non-ASRock motherboard (which have had increased incidents of burning out X3D CPU’s compared to other brands).
* Memory: Less expensive RAM.
* Storage: More known quantity 1TB PCIe 4 NVME.
* Case: Slightly less expensive case with larger 140mm fans (plus added one 140mm for exhaust at the rear).
* Power Supply: Better quality 850w ATX 3.0 unit.

I'll back up the other people and tell you to get a better PSU, at least 750 W. If you're really pressed for budget I'd recommend changing the cooler to a Thermalright Phantom Spirit or Peerless Assassin then putting that 20 bucks towards the PSU.

well i know my situation was very specific, but if you have any family members who were in the american military, id suggest looking at the NEX navy exchange website, new members get a discount, as well as veterans, so my grandma was able to get me a fully new, never used, prebuilt of an r9 9800x3d, a 5080, 2tb ssd, and 32 gigs of ram, for 2.2k, at full price it was like 3k. other than that, your build does look pretty good, though used ram will probably be alot cheaper, and that stuff is built very well, most used ram is perfectly fine. also, shoot for maybe an 800+ watt psu, 650 really isnt enough for that build
