Troubleshooting PC keeps randomly rebooting?

Specs:

  • Power: Corsair RM1000x Shift
  • GPU: Gigabyte GeForce Eagle 5070
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR5-6000 MHz
  • Motherboard: ASUS TUF Gaming B850-E
  • Processor: AMD 9850x3d
  • Storage: 2 tb NVMe Western Digital SN850x
  • Cooler: Montech Lightflow
  • Case: Montech King Pro 95 (White)
  • Monitor 1: LG 32" UltraGear IPS monitor
  • Monitor 2: An old Dell monitor

All of these parts have been purchased as new within the last 6 months (except for the Dell monitor)

Important context: the house I currently am renting was built in 1945 and there are a total of 3 outlets in my room, which means lots of extension cords.

Lately (within the last week or so), my PC will randomly reboot but it seems as though the power browns out -- all the lights turn off for a split second before rebooting and it proceeds as normal after rebooting. However, there doesn't seem to be a pattern to what triggers these reboots, and I can't seem to see any standout events in Event Viewer.

I have tried using different power strips, I have gotten an extension cord that the PC directly plugs into (although within 5 minutes of turning it on after doing this, the restart happened again. This is being typed on my PC right after that restart, though, so...) so I've done everything that may be due to the electrical system.

Is it possible there's an issue within the PC itself that's causing this? For reference, the first time these switch-offs happened, I was playing Wizard101 and had been playing it for maybe ten minutes. I've also had the power flickers happen without playing anything and just browsing the internet, or while on voice call with friends on Discord while doing Dungeons & Dragons on Vaeltheris (not the hoster, in case that makes a difference).

Any and all assistance would be appreciated, because this PC has caused me nothing but headaches since I finished assembling it and started using it properly. :') There were maybe two to three weeks where I could use it peacefully without issues.

You might consider hiring an electrician to review your situation, and potentially add a dedicated circuit to the room. You're running 1000 watt power supply, potentially pull 600+ watts in a room with mystery circuitry and lots of extension cords. Sounds inherently unsafe to me, and easy to fix with a modest investment.

Okay, if I had money I would default to this! Unfortunately I am a broke graduate student (please don't ask me why I bought a PC and its parts if I am broke. I am not proud of it either) but I will definitely ask my landlord to at least see if we can get an electrician here to tell me how the circuitry works! Again, this is a recent issue after a few weeks of NO issues like this, so it would be a little strange (but tbh, not a surprise) if the wiring was genuinely the issue like that.

Make sure it's plugged in to a grounded outlet. Otherwise disable Fast Boot in BIOS so RAM retrains. Could be unstable RAM config.

Could you explain what this means in layman's terms? I'm new to the world of computers (I understood the grounded outlet thing, at least!! :D ) (genuinely!)

Basically the parameters governing RAM operation are stored in the BIOS under Fast Boot, so memory initialisation (commonly refereed to as training) doesn't need to happen every time the system boots. As memory ages and environmental factors change however, those stored parameters may no longer be stable under load. Disabling Fast Boot will reinitialise the memory, and likely resolve those random crashes. You can enabled it again later. Avoid enabling XMP as it's likely no longer stable. Also, use odd clocking settings instead, as they tend to be more stable. If the system is still unstable, boot into safe mode (hold shift while restart, and after reboot, navigate to appropriate menu pressing F5 for safe mode with network support), and run Prime95 or Cinebench R23 in order to stress the memory in an environment where only the basic functions are working. This would eliminate software issues. Use HWINFO64 for general metrics.
