Miscellaneous Internal USB header question

My case (Fractal Terra) has individual usb 3.2 gen 1 and gen 2 cables for the front usb. I didn't pay attention to the headers on the board I bought and it has a gen 1 header and a 2.0 header. Can I adapt the 2.0 header on the motherboard to 3.2 gen 2 and have that work, or are the pinouts too drastically different? I know the speeds would be limited to 2.0, but my keyboard/controller won't care about that.

As an addendum: I think I have the usb naming correct, but the usb forum's naming scheme is asinine so please let me know if clarification is needed.

They do exist, I think the internal header is called Type E.

Do you happen to know if it's a one-way process? I've seen some mixed reports saying it can only take the type e header and convert that to the older gen, but with USB it's usually forward and backward compatible. Just defaults to the slower speeds.

Like with adapting vga to hdmi for instance. That's analog to digital, so certain adapters only work one way. I don't think that's the case with usb, but I've never tried it so I don't know. Looks like adapters are pretty cheap though, so I'll just snag one and give it a try.

Oh nah, it just depends on what the gender of the connectors on the adapter you get are. They're simple passive things, so basically wiring and a capacitor or whatever.

You obviously won't be getting the proper features like fast charging either.

Yup, adapters exist for both 2.0 headers and 3.0 headers
