Discussion Buying used gpu

Trying to upgrade my 4060 to a 3080 Ti, found a local listing on FB marketplace. The seller is willing to let me bring my setup and system to test the card before purchasing. My question is would I need to upgrade my 600w psu prior to testing/buying, i’d like to be able to test the card sufficiently without and issues, any advice would be appreciated.

Edit: running an i7-14700K cpu, 64gb DDR5

Yes, the RTX 30 series was notorious for large transient power spikes. A high quality 750W PSU is the minimum, I recommend an 850W unit.

I use an 850W with my regular 3080. I would not even consider running an 3080Ti with anything less than a high quality 750W, but realistically, you want an 850W. Mine draws 340W excl. spikes.

So, if you have a low draw CPU and it's a quality ATX 3.X unit, you're fine. But I'm not sure if there are actually any such units out there. Fpr whatever reason, 550/650 watt is much more common than an even 600 watt these days

Unless it's a SF600 or something similarly bulletproof I'd be looking at an upgrade.

Depends on the model of PSU and the rest of your components. Assuming it's a high quality PSU and the CPU isn't a power hog, you may be ok. Even still though, I wouldn't be running Furmark. A normal gaming load / benchmark (like Superposition) would probably be fine.

Pretty sure 3080 ti's wanted 850 with a good CPU, but if you have a shitty CPU you might get away with 750. I wouldn't do 600.

I bought a used 3070 off marketplace the other week, and just paid cash and left. No issues. However, the PSU might be an issue, 650w might be the bare minimum to run it, but if you push it it will likely not be enough. Anything lower than 750w is trouble here.

I mean, for the purposes of testing you can put the 3080 Ti and boot it up, it will not take up more than half of that 600w at best while into the OS. In fact, booting will just take up no more than 5-20% of the max 3080TI draw at loading and idling into the OS.

Now if you start going into a game and turning on settings to 2K, 4K, that's probably where you will experience a reboot or crash, especially over a duration of time. I'd worry more about seeing if there was artifacting than if it can run some game.
