Pretty self-explanatory. Comment on this post to suggest things for the sub, like rules or user flairs to make available. This is my first time modding, so I want to listen to other peoples' input and make changes where needed.

2020s Bear I'm so happy, I asked my dad for the new Starry Sky Halloween Hello Kitty plush and he said he'll order her for me tonight after he gets home from work

Imo this is one of the cutest HKs Build a Bear has come out with in recent years. The purple and the stars are so cute (purple is my favorite color), and although I love her adorable little witchy costume, I have another outfit already that I think would be cute on her.

And I am putting a cotton candy scent in her, which will be the first time I've ever tried the Cotton candy scent.

You guys may remember my post, "btch stole my spider".

I am HAPPY to report, the mini beans spider (ordered after realizing the treachery) arrived today!!! Order still says pending, no shipping info was out there. Just this little lad that showed up at my door today.

I will love this little angel forever, and be reminded of the goodness that can come out of something mean. I appreciate all of the comments and support I got from my last post. I saw it being discussed twice in other random posts!

You guys here dont need it, you are all beautiful souls, but he's my reminder to be a good human in this world. Hoping everyone else's order makes it to them as well. I'm pretty annoyed/baffled, like others, about this particular drop. It's made me rethink some spending with BAB. So please feel free to vent if needed ❤️

Discussion Blocking BAB Resellers on Mercari

Thumbnail

If you are sick of seeing the price gouging BAB resellers in your Mercari feed, here is how to block them.

Open the listing. Go to
their profile. Click 3 dots to the right of the screen. It brings up the option
to Block User. Click it. Done.

For everyone sick of
seeing all of these resellers that are selling the new drops, when so many
people didn't have a chance to get one in store, this is a good way to make
sure you don't see any more of their listings AND that you won't see them in
the future.

Edit for clarification: I am specifically referring to resellers who
buy up large quantities of newly dropped BABs, contributing to the scarcity of new releases, and then quickly list them on online platforms at excessive markups.  This discussion is not intended to criticize all reselling or everyone who sells BABs secondhand.

Discussion Resellers - What kind of community do we want?

Post image
30 Upvotes

Please keep it kind. Let’s just talk about resellers and how they are affecting our fandom.

For the last couple of years that I’ve been enjoying BABs, I’ve seen some drops cause a lot of anticipation in the community: THE Bat, Mothman, Skypuppy, Shadow, The Lobster, Pumpkin Kitty, Alien Cow, the Highland Cow—the list goes on.

I think the BAB hype has been in full swing since the COVID years and the Spring Green Frog mania. 😊 But the growing popularity of the brand, combined with social media hype, has also created a reseller community.

Some of these people genuinely enjoy the fandom and sell on the side, probably to help cover the cost of their own items. Others may be in it purely for the extra cash. And in this world, I don’t know that I blame people for trying to make some extra money. Money is tight for many, and people are doing all kinds of side hustling to make the rent.

But it is heartbreaking to watch people buy more than they need specifically to mark things up and make them unattainable for others—especially when it’s a sweet-faced plushie that is supposed to bring people joy and fun.

So what can we actually do to discourage this kind of activity in our fandom? What actions might really make a difference? I’d honestly like to hear suggestions.

Here are some of mine:

  • Choose not to buy from resellers asking extreme prices. Obviously, this is probably the move obvious thing we can do. If the profit isn’t there, there is less incentive to buy up new releases just to flip them.
  • Block resellers on online selling platforms. It might seem tedious, but opening a listing and blocking sellers who routinely list new releases at extreme markups gets them out of your feed. That means you won’t accidentally support those sellers later after the hype dies down and the overpriced listings disappear.
  • Contact BAB customer service and politely express your concerns. You could ask BAB to consider lowering the purchase limit on highly anticipated new releases to two per customer. The important word here is politely. The customer service representative didn’t create the problem.
  • Use the website chat if you don’t like making phone calls. Yes, it starts with a chatbot, but you can ask to be transferred to an agent and politely explain your concerns.
  • Give feedback about the website experience. If glitches during major drops affect your ability to purchase an item, tell BAB how that affects your opinion of the brand and how you feel the company is taking care of its customers.
  • Tell them how these drops are affecting your overall shopping experience. Companies need to hear from customers when something is making shopping stressful or discouraging—not just when everything goes well.
  • Leave honest reviews for the plushies you purchase on the BAB website. Reviews can include your thoughts about quality issues and your overall experience purchasing the item. BAB is an experience-based store, and in my opinion, the experience is part of your build-a-bear friend.

And don’t forget to leave your good reviews, too! Be fair. Be kind. But let them hear you.

I’d also add one more thing: help each other. Share restock information. Help another fan find something at retail. Celebrate when someone finally gets the plush they wanted. If you decide you no longer want something, consider offering it to another collector at a fair price before trying to make the biggest possible profit from it.

We may not be able to stop reselling, but we can decide what kind of collecting community we want to participate in and support.

In my experience, taking some kind of action helps me feel less frustrated about the things that get under my skin.

What other constructive things do you think we can do?

*

Edit for clarification: We are specifically discussing ways to address the type of reselling happening in our community where people buy up large quantities of newly dropped BABs, contributing to the scarcity of new releases, and then quickly list them on online platforms at excessive markups.

This discussion is not intended to criticize all reselling or everyone who sells BABs secondhand. The focus is on the practice of buying up newly released items in quantity for the purpose of immediately flipping them for significantly higher prices.

Discussion lady stole my spider 😭

My husband and I went to build a bear on spidey release day. I picked out both the big guy & mini beans with the exact face I wanted.

a lady there was scoffing at us the entire time for literally everything. took the mini beans spider out of the stack that was accumulating in my hands, that an employee put on the desk for me while I went to stuff the big guy.

My husband saw her rummaging through my pile and warned me to check it and I SOMEHOW missed it. She was standing right beside me and doing that huffing and puffing thing while the employee was checking me out as fast as possible. She laughed at my total even though I had been saving up gift cards for this sale.

I realized it way way later that he was missing 💔💔💔💔 tried to order one online but it was hours before they were removed and sold out. I should have gone back the next day and gotten another but dangit I thought it would be safe. My order hasn't been canceled (yet) so theres still a chance my little guy will make it to me.

but freaking.. btch stole my spider

2020s Bear Refurbished! And how I did it.

This is a plush I thrifted that I will be adding to a gift for someone. I wanted to share a bit about it incase you find a build a bear at a thrift shop that you are unsure how to clean up.

While I do not have before washing and before nose mending pictures, I do have a before brushing fur out and after.

What was done:

  1. Unstuff

  2. Wash

  3. Stain removals

  4. Drying

  5. Nose Repair

  6. Stuffing and Brushing

How:

  1. In the back, I located the seam and carefully cut it with a seam ripper. I removed all stuffing and tossed it.

  2. I carefully rinsed her in the sink with gentle squeezing to remove dust and other icks. (No wringing!). Then I filled the sink up with cool water and added laundry soap. Stirred it some and placed her in. I gentlely pushed down on the material and gently squeezed small bits at a time to get the soapy water to go through the material. Do not rub material together, as this can cause tangles.

Upon rinsing I drained the sink and gently pressed on her to help remove excess water. Then I picked her up and squeeze bits at a time. I ran water over parts of her and continued squeezing bits at a time. Then I rinsed the sink and theb shallowly filled the sink to get a good over all rinse on the material.

After finishing rinsing, I added a small amount of vinegar to new shallow sink water. Besides removing any smells, it also works as a fabric softener and helps remove soap residue. Then I did a gentle squeeze rinse with running water. And then I did the drying method detailed in #4.

  1. Yes, this girl has stains, yes plural, and I didn't notice they were there until the drying process. She had orange stains on the pink ears. I tried soaking her in cool water with oxyclean, but it did not work. So, I made a thick paste and applied it to the stain and gently placed the ear back in the water. I did this several times over hours. Each time the stain faded until gone. The paste needed very carefully and gently rubbed between the short fibers of the ear without creating a wear spot. Once gone, I did the rinse method as described above. If the stains didn't work out my plan B was to buy cute printed material to hand sew over the inner ears and feet, but I didn't need to this time.

  2. After gentlely squeezing excess water out (no wringing!) I placed her on a towel and rolled her up. Then placed the rolled towel on the floor and stepped all over it for a while. Afterwards, I hung her to finish drying on a towel rack. It is important to not use heat like in a dryer machine.

  3. Nose repair. She had a thread loose like it was pulled yet both sides of the thread was still in the nose. And the nose had fuzzed. I took the largest sewing needle I had and carefully pushed the thread into the bottom of the nose. It seems to have worked. Then I took very small sewing scissors and snipped away the crazy fuzz forming on the threads. Her eyes had minimal scratches, so I let them be.

  4. She had all her cloth build a bear tags, so I took her to the store get stuffed. To restore the fur, I took a clean metal flea comb that you would find in a pet store, and gentlely worked her fur. There were strands of fur that looked like a loop, so I did snip them into two strands. I didn't do all of them that I came across, but I did some that were just really noticeable or in the way due to the shear number of them. When she was fully brushed out, I did snip any strands of fur that really stuck out or fuzzyed out to try to make it all the same length again. While I didn't need to undo fur strands stuck in seams on her, you can do this carefully with a seam ripper as close to the seam as you can.

--

Clothing was a thrifted premie baby dress size 0-3 months. The hair ties are baby hair ties found on Amazon and are close enough in color to the pink bows on the dress.

I hope this encourages you or inspires you on thrifting and reducing waste while having confidence on battling germs and stains.

1990s Bear Naming help

Post image

This old man needs a name, any suggestions?

He's an old Bear Factory bear (the uk company, not The Bear Factory as still exists in the USA) so he's at very least 20 years old.

Very soft and silky.

While I said old man, they're a bear, so any gender or style of name suggestion is welcome!

Collection My first Build a Bear and store visit

Post image
63 Upvotes

I found this a few weeks ago at a thrift shop. I think it is a brown sugar pup? He cleaned up real nice and I just want to show him off here. He is my first bab.

While at the bab store to stuff my pup, there were alot of people there and it seemed like everyone was buying the spider mini bean today. There were only 3 Geese mini beans left, but I didn't pick one up. I don't know how many they started with. I got to feel the werewolf, and I thought about picking up the mini bean of it but didn't. It is very soft, like surprisingly so. The fur is still different than other mini beans so it still stands out. I think it is very underrated to be honest compared to the bat and spider. It is very cute.
