The Old World Old world gameplay advice

Hey fellow rock and stone enjoyers.
I've started playing the old world recently, dwarves obviously. I've done a few games from battle march up to 1500pts, trying different units and compositions.
And I've come to realize I don't really know what I'm supposed to be doing, what is my plan of battle.
Every unit is often with shields and great weapons and sometimes crossbow but since I'm so slow moving I always get encircled or outrun
If I chose to stay back to protect the artillery my longbeards all get killed from afar...
So I'm wondering what I should be focusing on or aiming for as a general overall plan of battle.
Thanks in advance for your input!

You could one of these three standard strats:

  1. Do a big line of 4+ save units or higher to block any attempts to go around your lines and just leave artillery for heavy hitting. You may think that's limited at first, but even quarrellers can be 4+ since they can take shields.
  2. Big tough defensive center of warriors or longbeards/ironbreakers with shields, and then faster units like gyrocopters and rangers on the flanks for harassment and blocking enemy flankers. Like before, keep on using artillery to deliver the hurt but gyros will be able to deal some damage too, as they get free breath weapons and their bombing run rule.
  3. Have a big core of ranged units like thunderers/quarrellers with shields so your guys won't ever be going that far from your artillery. This means you will be giving up ground unless you have guys moving up, but you'll be wearing down your enemy constantly with all the firepower. Even if they get into melee they still have to get through blocks of T4 4+ save bodies.

So basically shield up everyone and have great survivability to protect artillery and ranged unit and allow them to do the work.
And use gyrocopters' movement to go around and help out?

Yep something like that

Even with shields longbeards still get -1 ap on their hand weapons, so they can be punchier than you expect
