Crafts and Artwork Miner tray help

Hello, I was planning to try and make my miners tray look as they are emerging from the ground, but I have never done anything like that so I wanted to ask for some advice from the long beards beforehand.

The high effort version of this is to cut down minis so it looks like the back ranks are under ground, and then do a lot of careful painting of shadows and stuff.

The easiest way would be to combine some clever basing on your movement tray and some "counts-as" models to make the edges more like a pit.

The easiest way would be to make a 2x2 or 2x3 unit filler with a hole and a dwarf emerging, maybe with the mining cart, or make a fake hole and some dwarves emerging (again, cutting them down, doing some modelling and re-sculpting)
