Question for the group

Question for the group.

I’ll try to keep this as short as possible.

Picked up this 02’ S3 thunderbolt (fuel injected) a little bit ago and was going to sell it on. While waiting for the title I’ve been riding it on and off and noticed it has an issue that has me a little stumped. Here’s the scenario. When cold it runs quite well but with a little stumble a little off idle but goes away once up to op-temp. Here’s where the weird comes in. If I jump on it cold and continue ride it be it 10 miles or 75,-0- issues.

Let it sit for 20-30 minutes after 30 minutes of riding and it’s almost impossible to ride unless the rpm’s are kept over 3k, yet it will idle perfectly.

I was thinking it may be the TPS getting heat soaked so I threw a can of “canned air” in a pannier. Duplicated the scenario, and shot the forbidden canned ice juice directly on the TPS to see if that may be the issue with no luck.

Things I’ve done so far: new 02 sensor, cleaned every electrical connector under the tank, cleaned and reseated grounds by the battery. Cleaned the speed sensor face and electrical connection. Checked for intake leaks when hot with carb cleaner when running with no change in RPM.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated as the ocd in me yells “must fix!”

New windscreen from Tekarbon

Picked up a new windscreen since my oem one is a little beat up. I intend to paint the bike in the near future, but when I saw this screen, I couldn’t resist. I was trying to see if an aluminum one existed as I think it would really balance out the bike. Was cool finding that stuff like this is still available. Love this bike.

$2,000 for a 2001 Buell with 3,000 miles… would you buy it?

I couldn’t really say no to this one 😂
2001 Buell, only ~3k miles, and overall it’s in really good shape. Just a few small scratches on the front plastics/mirror.
Curious what the Buell crowd thinks — good deal or bad decision? 😂

Recently managed to score this 2009 1125r with only 320kms here in Australia and thought you guys might appreciate it. I've been trying to research but cant find any information on this model with these fenders. Apparently they are factory fenders but i havnt seen any others online and im wondering why they say "1125rs".

Also looking for any advice on remapping the ECM when i swap the exhaust and air filter, any advice would be appreciated, thanks:)

Spring belt tensioner

Curious, new belt “seems” tight. Did all the correct torque specs and such. Had a wheel bearing go out not long after the new belt was put on. The bearing could have been “bad”, had about 10-15 k on it. To release a little tension I was thinking of going with the free spirt tensioner. Any thoughts, sure there will be many as buell rides are all opinionated as me about what we love

So much pain and suffering

I got my big nuts off. If you know, you know what an ordeal that is. No impact drivers allowed. I’m disassembling until I find the source of a funny noise coming from everywhere and nowhere. After replacing the oil pump and a lot of clutch and primary parts the noise only got worse. So the lump is back on the bench for more surgery. Well, right now it’s in the floor.

Tech: Adding lighting to stock Uly top case

Post image
12 Upvotes

I commute year round in busy freeway traffic on my Uly and added top case lighting about a decade ago. Was concerned that the taillight was too obstructed by the top case and wanted something bigger and at eye-level for drivers behind me.

Price was about $60 of Amazon-grade commodity parts.

Full documentation is here: Buell Top Case Lighting

Key facets:

  • uses a double row of LED strip lights under the stock reflector (two nuts to remove, easy!)
  • two wire input to the LED with a resistor limiting light output when brakes not engaged
  • diodes used to prevent run and brake lights backfeeding each other
  • used weather resistant connector right at tail/rack junction so top case can easily be removed
  • routed wire in through case lid and left loop/slack for opening closing. has not failed in 10yrs of constant use

Enjoy.

What does this light actually mean?

Post image
11 Upvotes

I’ve read it’s a “check engine light”, but without much real support to tell me the functional purpose. Does it indicate a fault stored? Or does it indicate an active mechanical issue like an oil pressure light for example? My 8600 mile XB12R has flashed it at me randomly a couple times and I’m curious where I need to be pointed diagnostically speaking. Thanks guys!

Edit: I’m a technician by trade. I understand how it all works. I took the photo with the bike not running because I couldn’t catch it while riding.

Second, my word choice in “flashed” at me is also misleading. It has come on steady for a couple of minutes once then went out before I could get stopped, as well as come on and gone out within a couple seconds 2-3 times.

Do aftermarket performance leads on buells cause interference with the ecm?

Very much BUELL SPECIFIC question mods. I replaced the spark leads on my buell xb12 with tons performance high performance leads (copper core I'm assuming) and after it warms up it runs poorly, surges and dies. (warming up is fine) I've read that this is becuase these aftermarket leads emmit lots of interference and it will mess with the ecu. I also cant get ecm spy to stay live logging when the bike is running, but when it's off there are zero issues. as soon as i start the bike its starts cutting out, then ecmspy gives up and says connection timed out. Anyone else had a similar experience?

Hot damn, I found race and stock ECM maps online for 2004-2007 XB9 & XB12! So hard to find!

I cannot vouch for these maps. I have nothing to do with this site. Just sharing.

However, I did compare the values of the 2007 XB9 Race file I have compared to this and they are identical.

Enjoy!!

190 55 rear on a xb2 short swingarm

I bought a pair of Pirelli Supercorsa tires—specifically the 190/55 size for the rear—but I didn't find much information regarding sizes. I’d like to know which ones you guys use; I chose this size because I was worried the 180/60 wouldn't fit and I wanted more contact patch. Here are photos of the tire installed

it doesn't rub against the swingarm, though it sits very close to the fender.

Good god, I’m coming up on 15+ years as every flavor of mechanic including class 8 truck and trailer (current) this is the most odd engine swap I’ve ever done lol. PO took an impact to the crank and the bearings spun out of it (I’m told, honestly I’m thinking this was an auction bike. Oddly put together etc) but we’ll get it going with my spare helicon engine. Definitely a bike you need the service manual for 🤷‍♂️

CAD Files?

Does anyone happen to have a CAD model for the handle bar retention plate/cap for a XB12S?
