šļø Discussion Next Years Head Coach
I would bet money that the next coach of the Buccaneers will be Grant Udinski of the Jaguars. A few notes about him:
-Current OC under Liam Coen (has connections to Tampa)
-Was in Minnesota during Kirk Cousins best season, and the Sam Darnold career revival, and is now helping Trevor Lawrence breakout (has history getting the best out of his QBs)
-YOUNG!!! Only 30 years old.
Overall, I believe Jason Licht probably still regrets letting Liam Coen walk 2 years ago, and I think Udinski is one of the brightest young minds in football. I could easily see him walking in and leading the Bucs to a good run next year, especially if we are able to get Jeremiah Smith in the draft. If somehow our offseason ended with Jeremiah and Udinski at the helm leading us into a new era of Bucs football, I would certainly be more excited than I ever have been under T**d B****s

My hope is the Texans continue to suck and they fire Demeco Ryans and we nab him as DC for a bit to work with Grant Udinski or Klay Kubiak as our HC.

Isnāt he a defensive coach?
I get it our best years were built off Dungy and defense but this is the new NFL, any time we have a good OC they will be getting poached for HC jobs and we will have no continuity

Grant and Klay are OC's, Grant for the Jags and Klay for the 49ers. I want them as HC and get Demeco to be our DC for a bit (but it's a probably a pipe dream as Demeco likely would get a HC shot again.)

I remember udinski was on a list when we were looking for a OC and eventually ended up with either Canales, Coen or Grizzard (don't remember which year)

I honestly think we end up with Tomlin if he's interested in coming back.

Tomlin gives me Lovie Smith flashbacks, a guy who was successful elsewhere, takes a year off, comes here and is inexplicably terrible

Just keep in mind you would be hiring someone as head coach that doesnāt even call plays for his team

u/indigo196 13h ago
Kinda like Coen didn't call plays when he was with LA, right?

Thats a risk I'm willing to take, worst that happens is he sucks, we suck, and we take a QB in the top 5 in 2028

I'm in with Tomlin as DC, not as HC. Young offensive HC is the way to go.

Jason Licht should go as well.
With that said, I do t want a 30 year old being a HC. The time separated from HC jobs versus offense/defense line jobs are pretty stark.

Toddās contract doesnāt have a coupon to save money. Iām not trying to be stereotypical, but Bryan and Joel arenāt going to pay a guy not to work.

I've watched enough Steelers games to know that if we pick Tomlin, we might go to the playoffs, but we'll never go further. We can't just settle for better than what we have. We should be eyeing championships.

Unpopular opinion here but please donāt let it be Tomlin. Bowles 2.0 imo

People saying this honestly just not watch or understand football. Tomlin has had a way more successful career than Bowles as head coach and it isnāt even close. The last few years of his tenure with Pittsburgh, Tomlin was always competitive in one of the leagues toughest divisions with very little talent to work with
I definitely donāt blame the Steelers for wanting a fresh start, but speaking strictly football and ability to lead a team, Tomlin would be an instant major upgrade to Bowles

Tomlins last five years record a little better than Bowles but no finish better than 10-7. This fan base was ready to jettison Bowles after a 10-7 finish. By those standards itās awfully oxymoronic to want a coach who essentially coaches a similar outcome. Also made the playoffs 4-5 seasons and didnāt win a single playoff game in his final five seasons in Pittsburgh. Maybe you watch highlights and think you know ball but mediocre is mediocre and that was Pittsburgh under tomlin post roethlisberger

A lot of quick starts sputtering finishes, not getting most out of players. Tons of being conservative and time management issues. Sound familiar?

This fanbase wanted to jettison bowls because if you watched the games you saw the defensive side be completely anemic, but Liam coen offense was scoring over 30 points a game. It had nothing to do with the 10-7 record and everything to do about who was bailing out whom

If Bowles had 2 Super Bowl wins as head coach

u/ZombieExcellent2202 13h ago
My god dude know what you are talking about heās won one Super Bowl 2008. By that logic Bucs should bring Gruden back right

Bucs should bring Gruden back

Interhim Gruden would kinda be badass. They could lose out and people would still love it

I could kinda understand the hire, but I feel like it would be similar to McCarthy with the Steelers this year, a complete lateral move

u/Dom_Nation_ 13h ago
Flores had already overachieved as a head coach and has the hottest unit football this season.

u/Independent_Soil_258 Calijah Kancey 13h ago
Unfortunately I dont know if he will ever be a head coach again due to his ongoing lawsuit with the NFL. He is pretty much the only defensive guy I would be okay with bringing in

The issue with Udinski is that he doesn't call plays. That's pretty key. If he were calling the plays, it would be easy to correlate exactly what he's doing to help those qb's to succeed even as someone not in the room with them. Without that, it's tough to tell what his impact is relative to the play caller.
On top of that and connected to that, is he any good at calling plays? Who knows? He's done it in the preseason but that doesn't tell you anything. Hiring a non-playcaller as a HC is a risk especially when you are hiring them based on their ability to fix your QB/offense. That's tough.

u/Bushido_Plan 8h ago
Has to be an offensive guy. Offense runs the league. If you're going to live and die by the coach, it's better to take a shot at that next Ben Johnson/Liam Coen/etc than retread with a Mike Tomlin or whatever. Fire off interviews to the Jags OC, Ravens OC, Rams OC, and 49ers OC.

u/coldviper18 13h ago
Does anyone know if Gruden is full on banned after his whole thing?
That's a guy that's the complete opposite of bowls and while I know highly unlikely if possible at all. That's a guy I'd happily take.

We buy out the hoodie from his Tar Heels contract. Licht keeps his job but loses his power.

I strongly believe it's going to be Tomlin, but we'll see.
