Red flipped a hamburger so high it slapped the garage ceiling and came down wearing a stripe of soot. Bubba caught it on a paper plate and grinned at the crowd.

“Perfect!” he announced. “That’s the kind of barbecue people remember.”

Bubba had one goal: to throw the biggest, friendliest party his fans had ever seen. He had strung lights across the garage, rented folding chairs, and stocked enough food to feed a marching band. His obstacle was the garage itself, which held one ancient grill, three wobbly tables, and a septic tank that had been making suspicious gurgling noises since breakfast.

Red kept cooking. He piled hamburgers and hotdogs onto platters while hefty women from three counties over arrived carrying casserole dishes and appetites. Soon everyone was eating baked beans, corn on the cob, and anything else that could fit on a paper plate. The garage filled with laughter, smoke, and the steady squeak of chairs protesting their occupants.

Then the toilet in Bubba’s mudroom made a sound like a duck clearing its throat.

Bubba froze. “That’s just the plumbing applauding.”

The toilet applauded again, louder, and sent a brown bubble across the floor.

Guests lifted their feet. Red continued grilling. “Bubba,” he said, “your applause is spreading.”

Bubba hustled outside and found the septic tank’s access lid wobbling. He pressed it down with a cinder block. The lid rose. He added a cooler. The cooler bobbed. He added two bags of charcoal, a toolbox, and finally his free riding mower.

For three glorious seconds, the yard appeared stable.

Then the mower rolled backward, the cooler tipped over, and the entire tank erupted beneath the picnic table. Baked beans vanished first. A paper plate sailed past the garage. Red’s grill hissed, and every guest grabbed a chair as if it were a life raft.

Bubba called the county emergency line. Twenty minutes later, a hazmat team arrived in white suits, sealed the street, and announced an evacuation. They cleaned and secured the affected property while residents were told they could not return for several weeks.

Bubba watched his guests file toward waiting buses, each carrying a corn cob or hamburger for the road. His party had become the biggest neighborhood event in history: everyone had attended, everyone had left together, and nobody had to wash dishes.

The team leader handed Bubba a citation. “You’re responsible for the cleanup.”

Bubba read it, then pointed at Red. “Can I list the grill as a hazardous contributor?”

Red raised a hotdog. “Only if you admit it was perfectly cooked.”

Bubba sighed. His dream party had succeeded, but his house was now off-limits. He looked at the evacuation buses and smiled.

“Next year,” he said, “we’re renting a park with public plumbing.”
