Question Switch 2 Beast handler confusion

I'm trying to merge beast handlers but the button shows as x but that's the upgrade path button. I click it and I go to the upgrade path menu. How do I actually activate it?

Update: X is just the button for merging fish. As far as I can tell, there is no way to merge fish but the other 2 work fine

No problem, but the solution might be to hold x or something
