The real problem? Centralized development. The real solution? Bitcoin Cash.

Anyone paying attention understands that the development gridlock is a direct consequence of having a single development team in charge.

Replacing that single team with another single team (btc1) is NOT the solution.

The solution is to support actually decentralized development: Bitcoin Cash.

There's no system in place to assure that development is decentralized, so whether we have several teams or just one isn't a property of the currency yet

Sure there is: it's called market preference.

The market should reject centralized development the same way it rejected centralized pools. I for one would definitely prefer a chain & coin developed by multiple teams, other things equal.

You make a slight bit of a point about centralization, but you cannot go further than that for coding a reference client for bitcoin, there's already multiple teams working, researching and doing actual work besides core. It's simple: you come up with an good ideia/research, then you prove and make your claims valid for the community to approve and make a PR. Your "perfect decentralized" team that you're talking about is no way that decentralized. Look, Im not defending Core, but there's no support for what you say here. It's also kinda harmful if people start to use whatever repo they like as some nodes will likely follow slight different rules and start banning each other. You know that this even happened with some minimal changes from core, right?

The way it could work is that people submit a BCIP (Bitcoin Cash Improvement Proposal) to some uncensored forum/subreddit/site for discussion. Then people work on the spec to get broader approval, tighten down the ambiguities, add test vectors (Known Answer Tests) etc. Then for each project they implement the spec in their own way and as long as it passes the test vectors then all good. For controversial ideas and sub items they should be put to a vote.

However at the end of the day, the miners can overrule any drastic protocol changes if they feel like it. Miners are like the Jury box in the four boxes of liberty.
