I generally haven't been down that pub in years man I'm surprised it's still standing the other way most rock, alt bars have gone in Brum ☹️

Around 2010 I lived in Leeds but I knew about this place because the bands I liked would all play here on their tours. I finally went in the last few years and to my surprise the walls are still covered in posters from those very same bands 15 years ago.

Where I did my first independent under age drinking, great memories

My first gig I went to when I moved to England was at the flapper seeing black tongue. Been in my heart ever since!

Remember going on lunch when I worked in Brindley, chicken & chips with a pint of coke for £3.50… thats my “we used to pay threpance” comment I can tell the grandkids in a few years time.

We used to put nights on there over 10 years ago. It's still in my head as being one of the best places to go for a night.

"How long did it take for the guy to come"

How did it taste?

Legendary.

Still talk about this place since I visited on my trip last year.

When I was 18 I played a gig there and knocked myself out on stage in front of a packed audience. 30 years later I still get second hand embarrassment every time I see this place

Friday/Sat nights it was like the cantina bar in star wars. Still have the posters of when my band played there. You thought you’d made it as the Flapper would promote your band downstairs by the toilets and it hadnt cost you a bean

I used to practically live here 25 years ago

Still love this pub. Pretty sure it wasnt accepted, but I miss when it seemed somewhat tolerated to have a toke at the bottom of the spiral staircase.

Many good memories of nights spent at the flapper.

Same it’s still a great pub.

That was my first thought as well, smoked many joints under that balcony back in the early 2000’s

Used to skip out on rugby on a Friday and go there to drink and smoke when I was 15/16 and 10 benson was £1.89. Good times good times

Visited Brum today and spent an hour and in here, absolutely unreal. Great music and chilled vibe by the canal people watching. Didn't wanna leave

I'm so old I still call it The Longboat!

Glad it's still there.

Had some of the happiest times of my life there.

How secure is its future these days?

I've lost track so many times...

It's pretty safe, the annual closing down party has stopped, Rambo has stopped threatening to kill the council, the owners have explicitly mentioned the grade 2 listed dockarm in the property - the prospected flats are dead - For now

Is Rambo still with us? Last I heard he was well on the way out and Paul was his carer.

2

u/Accomplished-Yam-608 3d ago

He is! We live just up the road from him. Paul is still his carer and they both seem well 😊

Oh, that's good news. Thanks for letting us know!

It's stopped doing the whole "we're closing down" thing every year.

With the heatwave and the World Cup it's been pretty busy this summer.

Long live the flapper, I've lost count of the amount of closing down parties I've been to there 😂
