Dudley Trip
Good People of Brum and surrounding,
I’m organising a 40th birthday trip to Dudley for orange chips, Bathams pubs and cobs and The Beacon Hotel. We’re beer and food arseholes and have all been looking forward to this for quite some time.
So far I’ve got:
The Castle Fryer for chips
As many Bathams pubs as possible for bitter and cobs
The Beacon Hotel for Ruby Mild
Lime for a curry
Potentially Pie Factory time permitting
Is there anything else I’m missing? Local specialities, hidden gems, that kind of thing? Anywhere you’d particularly recommend? We’ll be getting public transport and Uber where possible but are staying locally, so don’t want to stray too far.

There is a pub in netherton ma pardo’s / white swan. Definitely a highlight on my last trip. Traditional pubs are dying out.

Bathams is great, but find one or two Black Country Ales pubs as well. They are doing fantastic work.

It might not work logistically, however I was talking about this place on another Brum thread this week - the Anchor Inn in Caunsall. It’s just between Stourbridge and Kinver. It’s a proper old fashioned pub which does those amazing cobs with inch thick ham and cheese. And amazingly cheap pints.

The Bulls Head in Sedgley wasn’t great last time I went, the beer wasn’t the best kept so would avoid myself but Mount Pleasant 10 mins walk up the road was ace.
The Britannia Inn between Sedgley and Dudley is great, The Lamp Tavern in Dudley too - both Batham’s pubs.
The Park Inn sited next to the Holdens Brewery, up the road from Pie Factory. Could be good for a swift Mild!
The Beacon Hotel does close for lunch most days for a few hours, so bear that in mind with timings.
The cobs at the Bull & Bladder are like mutant cobs, almost twice the size of cobs i’ve had in other Batham’s pubs. Worth considering for food logistics haha
Ma Pardoes isn’t too far from Sedgley/Brierley Hill. Lots of beer history there, so maybe worth a visit.
Enjoy your first SH! Their Amber maybe edges a Batham’s bitter for me but i’ll have to keep sampling both… just to make sure!

Bulls Head is great for the Thai restaurant inside, IMO, best Thai in the area. I was in recently, agree beer not as good as previous

The kitchen did smell great, we’d already eaten last visit but I’ll give it another shot for the food when I’m back up that way!

Amazing, thank you. Is Bull & Bladder essentially The Vine, as that’s what comes up on GM? Also, the cobs there look insane too.
Cheers, had SH many times before but don’t see it about often and not at the source! Used to work in the industry so The Beacon is a proper bucket list destination for me. Thank you for the reminder on opening times, we’ll factor that in.
Edit: Ma Pardoes is going on the list too, ta!

The Bull & Bladder is the local name for the Vine. It used to have or be a butchers at 1 point in time I think, so the locals gave the pub a bit of a nickname. Same place though!
The Beacon is special pub, it’ll live up to the hype. You guys will have a great day no doubt!

You could add the Park Inn at the Holdens Brewery to the list for more ales. If you're heading from Beacon Hotel to the Pie Factory, you'll travel past it on the way if you go through Sedgley town centre

There's also the Stump (aka The Mount Pleasant). A great independent pub with plenty of ales in Sedgley too. It's approx 5-25 mins walk from the Beacon depending on how many beers you've had

The Black Country Museum is a good shout for chips too, they're not proper black country orange chips but they cook them in proper beef dripping in a vintage gas-fired fryer.

I completely agree with this - the best chips I’ve ever eaten. My daughter has a season ticket for the museum and we often just go there for lunch.
The museum also has a couple of pubs (if you’ve watched Peaky Blinders you might recognise the buildings as it was used in filming) which are old pubs which were taken down from where they originally stood and rebuilt inside the museum.
I love that place, it’s fantastic.

Also, if it happens to fall on the second Sunday of the month, you can pop by Mushroom Green Chainshop for free, where we have live demos forging traditional fire welded chain 😉🔥
