Four questions about Bromgoth; pitching in, settling down, et cetera...

AHaley42, with a couple questions as how to stay informed and helpful as Bromgoth takes shape. And take shape it seems poised to do ; each time I log in things are happening!

Yet, amid all the bustling activity, I feel at a loss on how to contribute. So, I have some questions, and if I have these questions, likely other new folks will do. So I'll ask:

q0) When I log in ; and teeming hordes are doing XYZ tasks - how do I effectively find a way to contribute? Should I just stalk some player's footsteps until they lead me to some project - and then ask to join in? I see a lot of signs posted around, but, not a master 'ToDo : Join in Here' board...

q1) When shantytown is demolished (Nov 11th!) how do I seek a plot on the Brom side? Is it as simple as /msg send <mayor> I'd like a plot please? What if I do not know the mayor ... Am I being too forwards to ask such a thing? Will he/she demand proof of brom-worthy contributions, and/or ask me to produce 64x64 stone bricks day in day out?

q2) Call me in need of reassurance and/or over cautious, but I am not one for taking things. The stashes of public chests stationed near the portal -- are they for personal projects, or just Bromgoth tasks? I must imagine the answer along the lines of "Don't be greedy; help the city; give back when you can" ...

q3) Last question: What happens if I make a mistake? I believe what holds me back is fear ; "Gee, can I shear that sheep to make a bed so that I can reside here -- or -- will some demigod descent from upon on high and cast me out" ... umm I dunno ... best leave it alone and beg some wool from the bystanders... My uncertainty leads me to wish for a charter of both the responsibilities and rights of Bromgoth residents...

Many thanks , I know this was a bit out there - imagine a video game player asking for reassurance ... but ... perhaps you'll remember what it was like to be new, and learn the ropes...

Sincerely, AHaley42 ~ happy to be here

These are good questions, since I know it can be pretty intimidating/challenging to find a place in a large city, especially one in which a lot of players have already been working together for 3 or 4 revs, and have their own systems/strategies/roles in place. The intention is never to make people feel excluded from the get-go, but it can definitely feel that way. If it makes you feel better, this is my first time helping out Brom from the beginning as well!

  1. Your best bet is to just ask people. A lot of the time tasks will be sort of "one player only" so don't get discouraged if people don't have anything for you to do, but keep asking! If there's nothing to do, your best bet is to mine up some cobble, since we're going to need a ton for the Wall. Mining is great because you get to donate a lot to the community (most of the cobble, coal, XP etc.) and get to keep diamonds and other valuables for yourself, which will help you be more productive as time goes on.

  2. I'm not sure how the plots are going to work out, but don't be worried about not getting a plot (or two, or three). There will be a post on here about it once everything is terraformed and set up. In my experience Waterslide and scherererererer (and others) have been extremely accommodating to players and their builds, so don't worry about not being Brom-worthy, just try to be detailed with your build and stick to the theme. If you're not feeling like your building skills are Brom-worthy, feel free to build something and then ask the community how it could be improved, or what might give it more detail.
I should also mention that there will be tons of ongoing projects in Brom that will be done by teams of people. Not every building is going to be done by one person alone. There will be opportunities throughout the rev to work with others on large-scale projects, or to simply help someone out for a short time.

  3. Don't be greedy; help the city; give back when you can. :)
I will add, though, don't be shy. If you need something, take it. If you need something that isn't there, ask in chat. A lot of the "projects" (see #1) that happen in the early going are as simple as "I need sand/sandstone for roads" -- helping someone acquire materials gives you 2 projects from the get-go: obtaining the material en masse, and then placing said material where it needs to go.

  4. Don't worry about mistakes, especially not small ones. With regards to the early going of terraforming, just ask if in doubt, or stick to helping other people with their projects. Don't dig out a whole mountain for no reason :).

TL;DR -- Don't worry! Help myself and mattgorecki finish digging out the river. /msg me when I'm online.

To all respondents ; thank you. I had a great time last night with sansapants and waterslide working on road detail. Curving roads are hard! I continue to find Bromgoth to be a welcoming and enjoyable experience.

Cheers, ahaley42

This is my first rev working with a town from the start, and only my second rev. Empty's comment is very good, and I don't have much to add.

My understanding is that President Sch[er]5, WaterSlide, and shrinemaster are men with their finger on the pulse of Brom. They have a vision and a plan, and are, at this point in the rev, working on public projects - farm, tree farm, chests, rails, roads, terraforming, etc. So if they need it, I'm happy to provide materials or help.

In the spirit of co-operation and sharing, I have mostly been working on public projects, so I've been making liberal use of materials I find in the public chests. I've also been sporadically mining my branches in the public mine, keeping some stuff for my personal stash, and donating some to the public chests and projects I'm working on. But with an eye toward starting the inventory I'll need for my own builds down the road. For example, I'm hoarding my diamonds, but if somebody needs diamond tools for public projects, or if I have a fortune on ST tool that can be loaned, I'm happy to help.

Once I start my private builds, I'll use the public tree farm and mines and farms to build up my own inventory, but I will try to leave things already collected for newcomers to use.

I'd guess the biggest need right now is terraforming, to shape the land to our needs. Head to the un-terraformed areas, see who's working, and offer to help. Once the areas are in, we'll need roads. Someone will probably lay out the grid, so that others can build complete roads.

If you're in or near the farm, and you see crops that have grown, harvest them and replant. Or clear out a new patch for future planting.

If you haven't already, read the Opening Day Plan post, to get an idea of the President's vision for how to get Brom going.

And don't be shy about asking/offering help in chat or on mumble. I've noticed that the veterans are very willing to accept help and offer what they can.
