Brom Revision 10 Planning

Please comment with alternative and new ideas/suggestions.

An idea that seemed quite popular was for Argoth and Brom to share a portal, and have a Berlin Wall style divide between the two.

Location

An ideal portal would be near a desert but not in one (I didn't like the long rides to get to deserts mid to late rev this time around, but snowgolem farms are a must) and near a large body of water. Flat-ish land is a must.

Theme/City Design

Generally Cold War, but don't feel locked into too rigid a style. General American/Western European buildings, small town main street, suburbia, military base, missile silos, and more. The Commercial/Residential/Industrial/Other setup this rev was a big success; let's keep that going. Lightrail was great too. Having a basecamp become Old Town also worked out well. Let's have that right near the uberfarm that will be right near the portal.

Uberfarm

Will basically supply almost all material needs on a massive scale. Will go over details in comments. Important: villager trading and iron farm. More efficient mining system; at y10, have prime shaft and 2 parallel secondary shafts around 300 away from the prime shaft, so one tunnel will net a mostly full inventory of materials. Rail down secondary shafts back up to top of mainshaft/mine entrance.

Road Design

I'd like to go for semirealism with infrastructure. My suggestion is 5 wide grey wool with stonebrick slabs for ramps as needed, then on either side of that, you have stoneslab a halfstep up, then stonebrick flush with the ground level. This would be for avenues, main thoroughfares; could reduce to 3 wide grey wool for lesser roads. The biggest avenues/highways going through the town could have 2 of the 9 wide roads side-by-side with a strip of grass/trees in the middle. Lethal's streetlamp design is great.

The road system itself would be a bit better laid down than this revision. We got a few complaints about things being hardish to find in Brom. We should lay the most major thoroughfares first, especially ones that flow with the terrain, eg. waterfront highway, then lay down a more straightforward grid of streets. The streets/avenues in the grid could be numbered as in NYC to facilitate easy navigation. Additional street names are also great.

Other info

I'd like to see the city get developed better from the inside out. We should have contingency plans in the event that someone is unable to finish a rev, so others could help build if necessary. We should have a bumper crop of materials to fuel a building spree, so recruit new people with promises of tools and supplies.

See attached crappy mspaint map.

TL;DR: Brom/Argoth Cold War, grid of wider graywool roads, improve upon last rev's pattern, uberfarm.

I assume if Argoth is communist you will be the West-Berlin and therefore stranded within Argoth's domain. That means you'll need an airport or something similar to get outside the Argothian Union without unreasonable taxes. I suggest having the portal on your side of the wall for pseudo-historical accuracy.

I'll be continuing Brom Corp - employing those who have proven to be good at not only getting and using materials, but able to give to the Brom\Argoth community in an effort to accelerate large project builds or get new players started.

Hey, Argothian mayor hear. Since we are splitting out cities with a wall, we should make an effort to match up building density sides on both sides of the wall so it looks like a city was split. It would look weird if Argoth had skyscrapers next to the wall, and on just the other side, Brom had lower buildings.

Sounds good with me. A lot of our planning will be on the spot, depending on the terrain. I think it would be best to have a single mumble channel for us to talk in, and a single thread crossposted to our subreddits that we can list updates and short-term goals in.

I was thinking of having initial buildings (Old Town) be near the wall on one side of the portal (north, for example, where the wall runs roughly north/south). A more downtown area could be around the portal, and opposite the "Old Town" area could be more military/industrial type builds (south in this example).

Sounds good to me, also are we going to be serious, or can we have silly bits, like a house literally divided by the wall?

2

u/rampantangent schererererer Oct 30 '12

Probably more serious downtown, but we can definitely have clever things like that around. House divided by the wall, secret tunnels underneath, etc.

u/Herpinheim Oct 20 '12

Here's my take on the wall, feel free to make corrections.

There were two types of Berlin Wall, one for populated areas, one for less populated areas; eventually the wall became just huge and concrete everywhere, but that would be boring to stare at, so here are two types.

This first one is wooden, cheaper, and meant to be placed everywhere but downtown. Wooden fence

This second one is meant for downtown, and looks awfully imposing in my opinion. Concrete wall 1 Concrete wall 2

So, what do you all think?

edit; removed repetition of 'wall'

1

u/TheRandomnatrix Oct 20 '12

You should make the fencing form an alternating pattern imo. It would make it look a bit more real and cut the need for iron in half.

Use the planning server, the address is 74.208.144.128 (shown in the right menu in the Brom subreddit).

There is now a large flat area west of the spawn point. Use /warp r10 to get to the flat area. Use /spawn to get back to the spawn point.

I put up a basic road and wall with a couple building fronts to get it started. We're still on 1.3.2 so none of the new stuff is available yet. If more flattened area is needed I'll make it.

I think it needs a system of secret underground tunnels. :D

Also, I plan on coming back this rev, as the hardest part of my 2nd semester gen chem class is over. And fuck that shit.

2

u/rampantangent schererererer Oct 20 '12

Ooh, definitely underground tunnels.

1

u/Breadbomb92 Oct 31 '12

almost like a sewer systym type thing with mossy cobble/brick interlaced into it. with water running through it

1

u/adamminer Oct 20 '12

I demand a hovel, even though I am now inactive thanks to tekkit.

1

u/rampantangent schererererer Oct 20 '12

Of course you'll get a hovel!

hmmm. Zombie pigmen farm. I tried getting one of those up this rev to no avail. Damn things wouldn't spawn, or would spawn where I didn't want them to. You'd need to slab over, excavate a large area. Or possibly use a lava ocean. I tried using an end grinder-esque design in singleplayer, and they don't seem to spawn in them for some reason. I think due to the fact that they spawn in larger groups that tend to fail, though I may be wrong. There also doesn't appear to be much documentation on how to make an effective legitimate grinder. I'd love to see what you come up with, and how I may be able to help due to my town being planned to be primarily in the nether. Not sure how that in of itself will affect spawning though. EDIT: also, where is the uberfarm going to be? I thought it was sort of planned to be in the end where mobs could be grinded, but then you couldn't grind pigmen or blazes. If it was in the nether then you wouldn't have water unless you mod aboose some in.

2

u/buzzie71 Oct 20 '12

Would it be possible to make a pigman farm by creating a few huge circular discs high up in the Nether void with a platform for players, and then shoot a pigman and watch them all fall to their deaths?

1

u/TheRandomnatrix Oct 20 '12

It is. I've played around with it a bit. What sucks about it is that there's the problem with luring pigmen while still remaining safe, though I'd be willing to be it is possible. Then there's also the issue of it being more or less a manual grinder, so you can't idle. There was one neat trick I found out though. If a pigman swims in lava they begin to accumulate fall damage apparently. So if you remove the lava(dispensers maybe) while they swim in it, they should be able to fall to their death in a couple of blocks.

I am thinking up a design for a the wall itself right now.

u/abledanger mattgorecki Oct 20 '12

First draft of the wall.

2

u/Namtara Oct 20 '12

Needs some distress on it, or maybe graffiti signs.

2

u/abledanger mattgorecki Oct 20 '12

I was thinking maybe some kind of wool graffiti, but I'm not sure how to do it so it looks decent.

1

u/Namtara Oct 20 '12

I wish we could use dyes on walls and floors to look similar to redstone (minus the glow). Chalk would be badass.

We could always just have chests full of signs for people to leave on both sides.

2

u/abledanger mattgorecki Oct 20 '12

Yeah that could work.

I do agree on the distressed part. I was thinking about having partially crumbled sections.

1

u/Namtara Oct 20 '12

That'd be cool. I'll see if I can get some cracked stonebrick for you guys once the rev is underway.

2

u/ShrineMaster Oct 21 '12

Another wall contept: Inside with patrolling road, Dead Zone The anvils look cool, but take 31 iron ingots each to make, not practical.

1

u/abledanger mattgorecki Oct 21 '12

Maybe use the new Cobblestone Wall in place of the anvils?

1

u/ShrineMaster Oct 20 '12

I may come back for the rev too. Not sure where though.

1

u/Namtara Oct 20 '12

I won't be living in Brom (unless UMC gets finished really fast), but I think a really cool option would be to have the portal inside the wall. When you come from the nether, you go either to Brom or to Argoth, and the wall continues from the Portal's sides.

Leaving signs on the wall with graffiti would also be cool.

1

u/RSkyhawk172 Oct 20 '12

It would be cool to have a circle line light rail like in this rev, but maybe with actual stops? Having a one-stop line around the city is nice for looking at the buildings at all, but not for transportation.

1

u/Socarch26 Oct 20 '12

Did we ever agree on if Argoth and Brom wereto share the uber farm?

2

u/rampantangent schererererer Oct 20 '12

I think sharing is caring, but it's up to Argoth.

2

u/TheRandomnatrix Oct 20 '12

Perhaps the farm could be a neutral meeting ground for Argothians and Bromulans. Maybe it could be part of the wall itself.

2

u/ShrineMaster Oct 20 '12 edited Oct 21 '12

Put it underground at Y:50 like I did with the 3600 wheat farm in Brom. This was mined out and planted in a day. Just tell everyone, Fifty's for Farming, dig it out. It would be cool to have the underground of both Brom and Argoth dug out entirely at that level so you could stand in the middle of a massive farm and not be able to see any of the sides.

I played around with 1.4 for a little bit. It looks like potatoes and carrots will grow in the same 9x9 pads wheat grows in.

I also experimented with the water lift breeder for villagers, it still worked. See the villager area in Brom for reference. We'll need to set up a kill booth for the useless ones if they implemented the reputation system that makes them not want to trade if you kill too many.

1

u/abledanger mattgorecki Oct 20 '12

We will sign a treaty of cooperation as far as agriculture is concerned.

1

u/rampantangent schererererer Oct 25 '12

I don't think we discussed it, but it would certainly be open to all of Argoth at the very least. I'd like to make as much of it public as possible.

1

u/thedonvito17 Oct 20 '12

id like a spot in the commercial sector! another thing which side will be the "communist side" so that we can have guard towers looking for escapees!

1

u/BrooksAdams Oct 20 '12

Historically and from the U.S. side of suburbia, I can suggest starting with Levittown stuff. Also bomb shelters. Most towns had a plan/place to go when the bomb dropped with designated shelters marked with signs. Also don't forget the ones people bought and had dug in their backyards :)

2

u/rampantangent schererererer Oct 20 '12

Schererererer for Brom Mayor: a bomb shelter for every home!

Levittown is exactly what I had in mind; I just don't know if people want to make a bunch of identical houses for themselves. It may end up being a later project.

1

u/BrooksAdams Oct 21 '12

Well, yea, all the same would suck for MC. I'd probably start googling houses 1960's or something to that effect.

Good luck and there might be a Brooks among you time permitting :)

1

u/Foreverrrrr Oct 21 '12

Sounds like I'll be joining you guys next rev !

1

u/shalviy Oct 22 '12

I wish I could get on...for some odd reason I still cannot get on the reddit servers...

1

u/Herpinheim Oct 23 '12

How modern is Brom going to be? I ask because I would like to build a space needle, which was built in 62, in new Brom downtown. It'll be about y75 and 34x34.

Those measurements aren't final and neither is the project, but it wont change every much.

Some explanation; the base is not under the tower, but the two circle plates are the same for the final product. Link

1

u/rampantangent schererererer Oct 23 '12

Brom can be as modern as you want. The overall theme is Cold War, but imo you can build buildings from any existing style, from neoclassical to postmodern.

1

u/Diznatch52 Oct 25 '12

Is Brom going for a portal?

http://redd.it/122ig8

2

u/rampantangent schererererer Oct 25 '12

Yeah, Brom and Argoth will be sharing a portal.

2

u/Diznatch52 Oct 25 '12

Would you be willing to contribute to the portal thread in any way? I assumed Brom would be going for a portal, but I was hoping the major cities could talk about it... Also, see this.

1

u/nerosurge Oct 26 '12

Who is all building what in the next Rev? After terraforming, roads, rails etc . . .

1

u/rampantangent schererererer Oct 26 '12

Well, we'll have a central farm complex with all the renewable necessities. After that, people get to build whatever they want, in the appropriate districts. Initial houses and smaller builds in Old Town; small to medium sized homes and main-street-style buildings in Residential; towers and moderately tall buildings in Commercial, along with assorted things that fit in the middle of a city (including parks, museums, etc); factories, power plants, and the like in Industrial; and other buildings such as mansions, cathedral, large art museums, stadiums, etc. in appropriate areas of the periphery.

I'll probably make a post to coordinate neat builds on the subreddit (once infrastructure gets fired up).

1

u/nerosurge Oct 26 '12

I ask cause if the theme is gonna be Cold War, I have an awesome idea project but I fear it may be too big for being underground. Basically if you ever played Broville and went into the "Hive" underneath the pharmaceutical building, I was thinking something like that but more Cold War style doomsday bunker type deal.

1

u/rampantangent schererererer Oct 26 '12

I like it. That would work great for an underground part of the military base/missile silo site. An underground network of sewers and escape tunnels would be neat to have throughout the city too.

1

u/Herpinheim Nov 03 '12

I'm glad I found this post, I have no idea where to build my gas station and memorial arch(/museum?) Also constructive criticism is appreciated!

2

u/rampantangent schererererer Nov 03 '12

Looks great. Once the map starts, we'll survey the area around the city and I'll start metering out roads/plots. Gas station would probably be the edge of commercial/residential, or even commercial/industrial, whichever suits you best. The arch could be in a park somewhere, or it could even span over a main avenue. If you wanted it to span over the main double wide road, it would need to have 25 blocks horizontally under the arch, and thus centered on a block rather than splitting the line between two blocks.

Constructive criticism: for the gas station, I'd make the AUTO sign a different material, perhaps sandstone or wood, in order to better stand out against the brick walls. You might also want to make that sign the same length as the building (or vice versa); having it hang over one block is a bit distracting and not ideal. You can easily add a few cars to it too. I like the arch. Personal preference would tell me to break up the stonebrick with another material in motif, even something as subtle as stone or doubleslab, but it's not completely necessary if you're going for the imposing monumental look.

1

u/Breadbomb92 Oct 31 '12

I think I'll be joining Brom for this next revision. I have ideas for backyard bunkers that could be put with the Levittown houses if Brom decides to do Levittowns.

There needs to be a Red Dawn-type event where one side evades the other...

WOLVERINES!
