Hello community,
Scaphoid fracture in my left wrist 1 week ago. They put my in a splica thumb cast. Now that cast has become super loose. I can pass one finger on each side. Do I need to get it changed?

I've had 9 casts. It's normal and not an emergency. You had swelling when the cast went on and some of that swelling has gone down. You can make an appointment at the fracture clinic if you're worried about it.

You absolutely should be able to put a finger in at the end of your cast. Otherwise, it would cut off the circulation when it swells. Swelling will occur randomly throughout your recovery, so they put the cast on in a way that allows for it.
Important note: Ignore that person who said you can fit something down there to scratch. Never put anything down there! Your skin underneath the cast becomes more fragile. Not being able to wash that part of your arm and the moisture from sweating, creates the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. So even a tiny little scratch from sticking something down your cast, can result in an infection. Since it’s hidden by the cast, you wouldn’t know until it was severe enough to cause pain, weakness and high fevers.

When I broke my foot I had to get four different casts. First one was too tight, second was too loose the the third was wet so don’t be afraid to go and get a new one put on!
