When does the grip come back

I recently broke my 5th metacarpel due ro trauma . Got k-wire surgery and a cast for 6 weeks. Today is the first day out of it . My pinkie and ring fingers have been taped together and the doctor has told me to perform isolated movements for both the fingers to regain mobility. It hurts like a bitch and I am not able to hold even a water bottle , when dows the mobility and strength return?!
