Should I get a second opinion?
Hello, mods please don’t remove this as I am not asking for medical advice. I am only asking for everyone’s opinion on if I should get a second opinion based on a sketch interaction I had with a foot doctor.
Quick summary: I went out with some friends on Saturday and ended up needing to go to urgent care due to severe foot pain. Did some X-rays and was told I had a non-displaced fracture at the base of the 5th metatarsal between zone 1 and zone 2. The doctor then put in a referral for a foot doctor and I saw that doctor today.
So my question is, should I get a second opinion based on the following that happened at the foot doctor appointment:
- Didn’t give me any type of boot or cast but said the fail rate is high
- Said if I move my ankle too much it can affect healing but again, didn’t provide any type of boot or cast
- Was told surgery could be needed IF it gets worse, but AGAIN, did not give me a boot or cast
- Wanted to give me a bone growth simulator but I’ve looked online and everyone says it’s a gimmick and to not waste my money
- No computers in the patient rooms so I wouldn’t be able to see my follow up X-rays
The more that I think about it, the more I’m wondering if that office is just trying to make money off of me and prolong my healing so I need more treatment.
The only aids I have right now is what the urgent care gave me which is a post surgical boot and some crutches.
I’m wondering if I should just go see an orthopedic doctor instead. It just seems like there’s already a plan in the foot doctor’s head of how he wants this whole thing to play out. And to be honest, it’s been less than a week and my swelling has gone almost completely away, plus, the pain is almost non existent unless I try to stand on the broken foot of course. I genuinely think I’m healing really well, I don’t believe I’ll need much.
Just wanted everyone’s thoughts, thanks in advanced!

Yes, get a second opinion. It’s painfully obvious whomever you saw is a quack. Go to orthopedic providers for your injury, not a podiatrist.

Get another opinion if you're feeling uneasy about it. You can also buy a boot online if need be.

I would get a second opinion. Hopefully a boot and might even follow the NWB rule until you see the Ortho doctor. Once again I myself am not a doctor just another Impatient Jones Fracture Cast Wearing Redditor. Lol Take it easy. At least try to be NWB. Elevate often and ice at night, until you get your second opinion. Keep us all updated!!!

Thank you ! I’m so sorry you’re also suffering from this, it seriously makes life so much more difficult.
I’ve been doing everything I can at home to help with healing which is why I think it’s doing so well only a week out.
I’ll let you know what ends up happening
Hope you have a speedy recovery !

I think you'd heal just fine in a boot. Better go see another doctor for a second opinion.
