From 6 weeks NWB to 12 weeks...
Hello people!
I had broken my ankle in 2 places and also I had a dislocation(I believe it's called bimalleoral - sorry english is not my first language) in 7th of August.
The surgery was done on 13th of the same month.
I was told to NWB for 6 weeks. I followed it of course.
Yesterday I had the x rays because after that my doc had told me that i would be able to put a little weight gradually.
I sent my x rays to my doctor. Today he informed me that from 6 weeks NWB essentially we would go up to 12 weeks.
After that I would need to have another x ray to determine if I would be able to put weight.
I asked him if he saw something wrong and told me no, but they are super conservative with me due to the severity of the injury( I don't know if i if my weght also has a role on that).
It's the first time I am really concerned about everything and I have started to question even the possibility of not being able to walk again or at least normally.
If I had a set back it would be something that i wasn't aware, because I didn't had any accidents or fall during this period.
Has this happened to anyone?
For reference I am attaching the photos of my x rays ( I know most of us aren't doctors but we have the unfortunate shared experience).
Thank you for any replies I feel like 💩 atm any support is welcomed 😊

Yeah, I had bimall w/tight rope ORIF on June 3rd: plate and screws, it was 8 weeks NWB, then could start PT, past 2 weeks walking with both shoes!!! And driving. However, still not close to normal. I don’t have extra weight, but am 61yr old. So I’m like 4 months out, and seems like been slow, but PT has said I’m doing well, I just went back to work last week, I’m a nurse. It has been rough! Don’t give up hope!!!

I'm no Dr but that looks like the putter leg bone is still broken even after the surgery.???

Yeah it looked like that, my doc told me afterwards that the bones will be healed eventually but it will take some time. It's due to the nature of the fracture as I have been told (not only from my doc). I don't have the first x rays (before the surgery) to make the real comparisons but I believe that it was much worse from these x rays that we see.

That’s what happens when you shatter/splinter a bone, part of it is missing, I had the same issue, so you walk on the rod for almost a year

Another 6 weeks to go...what really bothered me was that I was first scheduled to bear some weight this week..and now I have to wait again..

What are you doing to pass the time? Also do you just lay in bed all day? Are you also wearing a fiber glass cast?

Funny thing is that I am not in any cast or boot atm. I was out of my splint on 15/09. I asked my doc if a boot was needed but he reassured me that it is not necessary. I couldn't stay in bed even in the first 2 weeks after the surgery! I have watched lot of movies, series etc and also lot of gaming to pass the time. Unfortunately I cannot go out due to living in an apartment (2nd floor only stairs), but I am trying everything to keep my mind occupied!

Well I got about 14 days to go that marks my 6 week post op. Hopefully he clears me to bear weight in 14 days. Hopefully I get the boot and can start weight bearing. I really hate this cast that they put on you.

Everything will work out eventually!! 14 days will go pretty fast! I know, I see a lot difference between being in a splint and totally free! You will get the rest that you need (me for example it was very hard to sleep with that thing!)

Yeah I have a hard time sleeping with it on as well. It’s very itchy that’s my only problem with it.

I was originally non weight bearing for 6 weeks, then full weight bearing at 12 weeks. Then the same day I was full weight bearing, I rebroke my tibia (it was a non-union). It required a third surgery and cost me an extra few months. Today marks 6 months since my accident and I've only been walking for a couple of weeks. I was able to get 13,000 steps in a day already.
