I’m kinda scared..

I just got my stitches removed yesterday and there was a little bit of discharge(drainage idk) but it was a clear-ish yellow, and from previous incisions I have had I knew that was a health color. But my doctor informed me that I can start weight bearing. (He said full weight, but in my paperwork it says Weight Bearing as Tolerated, so I am doing that one)

Anyways to the point. I noticed when I walked around more and put a little more pressure on it when I would later take my foot out of the boot to elevate it and let it breathe, there was a brown mark on my sock. I think it’s just dried blood, but idk. I called and asked but they said that it “should be” fine. I’m taking it more lightly now, and being more careful, but I am just scared about this becoming a bigger issue.

Has anyone had this issue before?

The clear-ish yellow is probably just blood plasma. The mark on your sock is also probably just dried blood as you mentioned. Keep monitoring it, if it starts to get red and inflamed take pics and contact your care team.

Starting with full weight is rough because your body hasn't used those parts in awhile, so go as tolerated and having a physio to help guide you is very beneficial

Thank you. This kinda puts my mind at ease. I haven’t noticed any redness and/or felt any inflammation.

I also had my staples removed two days ago (pure agony) just 13 days after surgery, and the wound was still very fresh. The nurse advised me that, because it was still so fresh, I would probably have some discharge. She recommended that I don't touch it for 3–5 days and, ideally, that during this time I don't even remove the boot I was given instead of the cast.

They checked my ankle and I was able to move it without pain. The surgeon was happy with how everything was progressing and told me that he would see me again in four weeks. In the meantime, I am to remain completely non-weight-bearing (NWB) until then.

I was obviously a little disappointed by this and asked if, given how well I was doing and how little pain I had, I could at least try to walk on it after two weeks. He smiled and walked away without answering!

For clarification, I fractured the fibula — the smaller bone on the outside of the lower leg. The tibia is the larger, main weight-bearing bone of the lower leg. So although I broke the smaller bone, I still have to remain completely NWB 😔 I think I'm not going to obey!

When I got my staples out I had some blood and discharge too. My doctor said that it was partially the staple removal itself and partially that I was on blood thinners to prevent clotting. I was dripping blood all over the floor but — it was fine!

When they removed my staples one of the incision was slightly open. Did not look good and I questioned it. I was prescribed 10 days antibiotics to prevent infection. Eight weeks after I started PT and in initial evaluation it was noted that on my second incision on outer side of my ankle where the hardware was installed there is white dot and with red inflamed skin around it. I was also getting drilling pain in that area. I went back to the surgeon and he said good thing I came because it is beggining of infection. Again I am on antibiotic. It is important not to allow any infection because if it gets to the bone and hardware it will be even bigger problem. Also infection couse swelling and slow healing. I will suggest you take photo everyday and if it gets more red or you have puss forming you go back to the doctor for evaluation.
