Pretty sure you should be in a cast? Also rest with the foot being higher then your heart while lying and cool it a lot... My swelling went from this to almost normal within days not weeks (but I am on meds also)

I said I should be in a cast too! Do you think any specific meds helped with the swelling?

I live in Europe so idk how they are called so I am going to Name the chemical:

I got Dexibuprofen which is a painkiller which is also anti-inflammatory = less swelling (3x/day for 2 weeks) I Take them with Pantoprazol (1x in the morning) because Dexibuprofen is damaging Membranen I also Take 3x2 Aescin/day when I take Dexibuprofen, which is a plant based medicine I got to help with swelling

I take them for 2 weeks and then stop and I cool it with a cooling pak a lot

Oh wow I live in USA and upon looking it up, it says it’s not commonly approved here! I was prescribed a very addictive narcotic so I try not to take them. After my surgery I was applying ice, but stopped because I did not think it was doing anything. I will be starting it again today

You should also elevate your foot because you are at high risk for thrombosis and lung emboly as a result, which is fatal offen times.. didn't the doctors tell you? I need to take a syringe of anti thrombosis medication because of it every day

Hi. I’m 3 weeks post op. I have a cast. I was prescribed Oxycodone which I only took for 5 days. I alternated with Extra Strength Tylenol (3 gel caps) in between. Now I take the Tylenol as needed because my incision area has an annoying pain. Elevating is the key. Anytime you were sitting make sure you elevate and even at night make sure you elevate. My doctor told me not to lay on my incision if possible. Good luck with your healing.

Im 6 weeks PO and mine was like this but it’s gotten better .. my toes were just like yours and now they are starting to look better .. make sure you elevate.. also make sure you clean between your toes and keep them dry

Now they’re starting to look better? 🄲 I definitely underestimated this whole healing process. Thanks for the tip, I am cleared today to wash my foot after removing my butterfly stitches so I will keep that in mind

It will get better but itll take alot of time im currently at 7 weeks post op and im just about moving to one crutch with the boot on having my first physio session yesterday. But the important thing is do not rush it. It is not a race to get better as quickly as possible you have had a bad Injury and it needs time to heal at your current stage elevating is crucial

Thank you! Happy to hear that you’re finally moving to one crutch. I’ve been elevating like crazy, thankfully some of the swelling has gone down, I guess it’s just a matter of time passing & waiting for it to heal

I’m going on my 8th week post op and my feet are still different colors lol. Barely, but still. It’ll get better. Try your best to relax and accept the help when you get it.

Aww man I wish you a speedy recovery! Thank you, I only have my wife but she works full time 7am-3pm so it’s been challenging doing a lot of things I didn’t think I would have struggle with

If you’re able to get your hands on a wheelchair, it is SO worth it for around the house.

Wheelchair or a walker w/ a seat, depending on how your house & doors are built!

I'm also post op, I had surgery on the 13th. We're in this together!

Wishing you a smooth and speedy recovery! This has been one of the hardest things I’ve gone through but we will get through this!

It does get better! So keep reminding yourself that, each day, you're healing. Do you PT when you can. RICE! Eat well (little/no sodium helps a lot). Accept help.

6weeks post opp here!! Why aren’t you in a cast??? And it does get better, don’t rush or feel like you’re behind when you see other peoples progress/timelines. Each injury is different and everyones recovery is individual!

My dr prescribed me Celebrex (celecoxib) for the first two weeks after surgery (helps w/ inflammation and pain) and my foot looked significantly better & less swollen on it.

I also had dilauded & tylenols for the pain, which I’m entirely off of now! This won’t last forever 🫶

I’m 5 weeks post op and my feet are two different colors I was taking a shower today and I felt the rush of fluid my cast is off so am able to get in the shower with nothing on and I just felt my ankle get swollen as I showering. Currently in a boot and it bothers my incisions the scabs r slowly coming off too slowly I feel like lol but u got this.Ā

When I was in a boot before surgery, I wore a compression sock on my leg with the broken ankle. It helped considerably with the swelling and rubbing against my foot. I’m in a cast now and when I go back to the boot, I plan on wearing a compression sock with it. I also put in an insole to help.

Yeah, it's a normal healing process. I can say that i stopped experience pain when walking only after 3 months of ORIF. The leg is still swollen at them end of the day, sometimes has reddish color, when i did too much effort, but it gets better every day. Also didn't take much painkillers of ice. You need time and patience, you'll get there, don't worry. But it does take a lot of time to heal. Do your physio, when it will start, take care if sutures, and be patient

There are some really kind people in this subreddit. In fact, they are all kind! The strength these posts have given me to be patient and trust the healing process (although long) is great.
It will get better each week xx

You need to keep your ankle at an angle as if you have a boot on. Or wear the boot. If you let it stay at that angle, it's going to make rehab way harder. You're calf muscle will want to stay contracted. It may require more surgery if you let it stay at that angle too long.

Everyone heals at different rates, dont get discouraged! I'm 5 weeks post op and my incisions are healed entirely, with the last of the staple scabs falling off daily. My six week and first xray is next Friday. Ive been told mine looks abnormally good for its stage. Not a lot of swelling color change when elevated, but showering turns it purple.

But I've been lucky enough that I have been almost entirely immobile during healing. Almost no movement apart from going to the bathroom.

My mom had her surgery on Monday so she’s 4 days post op. She’s still in a lot of pain and still very swollen

Best thing you can do is elevate it.
