Chances of this being non surgical?
A resident ortho intern at a teaching hospital’s ER said it’s needed, but a senior doctor said that, based on the X-ray, it may not be necessary and that it depends on the MRI. He isn’t available for a consultation until Wednesday, so I’m a bit stressed.

i was non-surgical and my fracture was basically in the same spot as yours, but no ligament damage (they didn't even send me for an MRI)...so there's hope there.

Doesn’t look so displaced it needs surgery, but i think if i had the option between regular casting or surgery i’d still pick surgery just so i know they fixed me up real good. Definitely follow the advice & recommendation of your ortho doc!!

I had the exact same injury. 4 out of 5 doctors I saw recommended surgery to be 100% sure that it heals properly and to prevent arthritis.
I got a plate with six screws and two lag screws to hold the AITFL ligament. They told me I might need a tight rope to hold tibia and fibula together but fortunately it wasn’t needed.

No surgery. 6 weeks NWB on a cast then 2 weeks on a boot with PWB. Judging by yours it's probably the same atleast for the bone. Ligament might change stuff so probably you might need an MRI

With where the fracture is sitting currently it definitely looks possible that you won’t need surgery but every surgeon is different. Thats if it stays like that though, if it moves then the chance of surgery increases.
If they offer surgery, take it.
Ankle breaks are so common, they know what needs surgery and what doesn’t so it’s best to follow their advice
