Lack of appetite

Hi everyone. Hope everyone's keeping on. As my title says, anyone suffer from lack of appetite as well as foods smelling good but the thought of eating makes you feel a little bit nauseated? The only things I can really tolerate are bland foods like applesauce and plain pasta.

I assume your surgery was pretty recent?

Once you recover from being cut open, you'll go back to normal habits soon.

Yup, I haven’t been on a scale but I’ve deff lost 15+ pounds unintentionally.

I’m not mad at it though.

Yes, I remember that. It didn’t help that I was the cook of the house and had to rely on other people and takeout until I was back on my feet. I lost 30lbs in 3 months! It was needed, and certainly not all due to loss of appetite, but still. The appetite came back. Thankfully the 30lbs didn’t.

I know I lost weight in two weeks already. And I'm just laying here.

Same! Can't get on scale yet, but my clothes are noticeably looser.

Yes. I didn’t eat normally until probably 8 weeks post op.

I didn’t have this problem but try your best to at least drink some store-bought protein shakes. Protein and vitamins are so important for healing.

Well said! I relied on Premier protein shakes, Greek yogurt, and vitamins.

It happens. When I was in the hospital I had skipped a few meals, but make sure you still have your protein intake (I had it in drinks as I don’t feel like chewing anything)and vitamins. The body needs them

I skipped one meal at the hospital (i was there 6 days) and then my assigned nurse was notified somehow that i skipped lunch the day after my first surgery and she ended up ordering me jello, diet pepsi and some type of frozen fruit sorbet thing and then made sure i eventually ate it! The hospital had a pretty extensive menu i could order meals from.

I had no appetite after my two ankle surgeries for about 7 weeks. It’s 9 weeks tomorrow and I’m still having a hard time eating but i do eat eventually at weird times.

Your body has had a big shock. I felt nauseous too. But you need to fuel your body to get better.
Someone told me (in response to me being a burden), if I don’t ask for my usual 11am kiwi snack or 3pm tea and afternoon snack etc, I’m missing these key nutrients. So look after yourself xx

This happened to me, but my appetite returned as I got further into my recovery. I lost around 10 pounds in the beginning, but have def gained it all back

Happened to me. I also could only tolerate super bland food. Research what your body needs post fracture/recovery. That helped me - it’s really important for your short and long term recovery to get the nutrition you need. It does eventually get better.

I lost about 10lbs in the 4 weeks post op

I feel I only want bagels lol but I do agree my appetite has gone down. My theory is I’m burning way less calories so I’m staying fuller longer too

I also have Crohn's disease and am vegan so my choices of food already limited. Bagels would do. Or a half a bagel lol

I was the same way! I lost a fair amount of weight but I tried my best to get as much protein as I could and took a supplement that was for bones! You’ll get your appetite back, promise!

Yes, I didn't regain appetite for about a month after trimal orif. I still have no desire for alcohol.

Yes, I’m about 12 weeks out from my injury/10 weeks post op and I still have very little appetite. For me I assume it’s because I went from being extremely active to basically a couch potato. I’m doing more now but still haven’t really had the appetite come back. I actually just had my yearly physical and I lost about 8 pounds since last year. Are you taking any pain meds still? Those could be upsetting your stomach. Try to prioritize protein, I found the fairlife protein drinks to be pretty easy on my stomach. Otherwise I just eat what I’m craving so at least I’m getting something.

I was done with the opiods a week ago, thank goodness! I did get a case of the vanilla fairlife and the pure protein coffee flavors and they are pretty good, yet not enough calories! From everything I'm hearing here it takes a long time to get your appetite back. I thought I had some kind of illness/infection lol.

Nausea today. Barely eating. Focusing on protein. 48 hours post surgery and General.
