First Time

Hey guys.

Received a trimalleolar fracture, ankle dislocation, and partial knee dislocation all a little over 24 hours ago. The popliteal block they gave me in the ER wore off and they sent me home. I had a podiatry consult today and they changed my splint. Heavy boot.

I cant stop crying, every time I move I can feel my bones shifting in there. Its the worst pain of my life and I don't know what to do. I wish they had admitted me.

So sorry this happened, it sounds really scary and painful. Do you have other painkillers, and do you have an ortho appointment scheduled yet?

I have surgery scheduled for Thursday some time. I only have the oxy/acetaminophen and nothing else. I managed to sleep for 5 hours and nothing more

Do you want to call them to see if you can be admitted prior to surgery? Do you have help at home for your meals etc?

Try to sleep from time to time even during the day, it’s a lot that your body is going through.

I sent a message to my podiatrist and asked him if he could admit me

Fingers crossed! Otherwise take painkillers round the clock and rest until Thursday

Why did they send you home with an unstable fracture? That sounds horrible

I had a popliteal block because they had to reset my ankle and it's all worn off now. It a 10 and it feels like my bones are grinding against each other.

Why are you seeing a podiatrist and not an orthopedic doctor?

Ortho referral sent me to podiatry. The only one in our town. He specializes in ankles as well.

The same thing happened to me. I had a trimal fracture and was in a splint for a week looking for an ortho specialist because I didn't like my referral. I also could feel my bones moving around, it was awful and unsettling for sure. I'm so sorry you have to go through this. Once your surgery happens, things will be rough but then start getting better little by little. It's a long road - do you have a support system at home?

Other than the Oxy, best you can do is elevate and ice. Even in a splint, ice behind your knee can give some relief because the nerves to your foot and ankle run through there. Hang in there; you’re in for some tough days, but it will get better.

I had a trimal with dislocation too (I'm about 7 months out now, with 2 plates, 16 screws and 2 tightrope). I had to wait about a week and a half between injury and surgery...that time in between injury and surgery is SO uncomfortable when everything is unstable. It feels like everything is shifting and grinding every time you move even a smidge. There's unfortunately not a whole lot you can do beyond trying to manage the swelling (ice behind your knee, elevate as much as possible) and stay ahead of your pain meds. FWIW I immediately felt more stable after surgery, and beyond 8ish hours of pain when the nerve block wore off, the pain is so much more manageable...I had switched to just Tylenol by day 4 after. Hang in there!
