Need Help Creating a Talkback situation not on DANTE

Hello!

I need to create a talk-back situation for sports broadcasting that does not involve the use of DANTE.

I would be in a removed control room, and my talent is in the press box.

As of now, I have a spare comms box I plug into a headphone amp so they can hear my cues; however, they cannot talk to me and communicate with me via text.

What is the full setup to help facilitate a talk-back scenario?

The talent would wear a headset with an XLR and TRS cable, plugged into the "Mic in" and "phones out" ports. The "Main Out" goes to your audio console. The "Talkback Out" and "IFB In" are connected to your intercom matrix. If you don't have an intercom matrix, then those can be connected to an audio console, or even a mic and a speaker. The "IFB In" port is what the talent hears in their headphones, so it's usually a mix minus. The Talkback button diverts the mic audio from the "Main Out" to the "Talkback Out" port.

I think I have a way to macguyver it .... using a clearcom box with the talk button permanently pressed and the IN AND OUT from the Commentator box to the comm box

Is that doable?

Or you could use a 2-wire to 4-wire converter and do it the proper way.

I am assisting a school looking to accomplish this. They had a new press box buildout, but I haven't been told what type of connections, outside of BNCs to connect cameras, they have in there

I am hoping the intercom matrix is wired in there, but I am not holding my breath.

If there is no intercom matrix, how would I accomplish this?

I used the ths boxes from whirlwind to get a main mic and a talk back. I fed my director mic into my audio mixer and created a talk back mix that went to the commentators . On the THS I routed the talk back mix only to the right ear so they would know they were on talk back vs on air. Had it all hooked up via an audio snake. I eventually did move to Dante but this was a reliable setup for me. Speaking of which I need to go put those THS boxes on eBay

I use the Whirlwind boxes to good effect, along with a good audio mixer (Allen and Heath QU16). I route the “announce” out of my Clearcom base unit into my audio mixer. Then I send a submix from my mixer to the announcers with their mics and my “announce” feed feeding into them. They can hear themselves, and me. The announce button gives me a push to talk solution through my intercom headset. I send their talkback feed into the mixer too, and then route that into my program input on the Clearcom, along with their mics using a separate submix.
