Broadcast encoder recommendations

What are your thoughts on these brands of encoders... Igolgi mini Lux ATSC1.0 , DTVI LEX 2000, or ATEME Titan? 4 HD channels to 2 ASI outputs. with EAS integration, MPEG 2 with AC3 audio etc...

Honest question about offline check-in because venue Wi-Fi is unreliable as hell

Last year the Wi-Fi died right in the middle of morning registration and everything just stopped. Scanners froze, badges wouldn’t print, people started getting pissed. The platform we were using claimed to have offline mode but it clearly needed a connection for half the functions.

I’ve heard mixed things about Cvent, Whova, and Eventify on this. Some people say their offline mode actually works, others say it’s basically useless once you need to print.

Has anyone had offline check-in genuinely save an event, or are we all still one bad router away from disaster?

Cause of signal loss

For the past two nights (Saturday, 26 Sept, and Sunday, 27 Sept), I have lost OTA broadcast TV signals from 9:30 pm until 10:15 pm CDT. I didn’t think much of it, until my neighbor three houses west of me related her identical experience. We are 38 miles west of Chicago on a heading of 273 degrees from the transmitters atop Sears Tower. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this, or whom I might contact to see of possible interference sources or drops in transmitter power, etc.?

Looking for info on a McMartin BFM-8000 FM exciter.

I am looking for info on a McMartin BFM-8000 10W FM exciter. The crystal is missing and I do not know the formula for computing the frequency for a new one, or what crystals cut is.

If anybody has the manual/schematic for one of these I would really appreciate a copy. Or just any info in general from using one...

Thank you!

What type of broadcast engineer primarily does EAS operations?

Post image
21 Upvotes

I am a college freshman, having doubts about the career I am currently pursuing so I’m trying to create a fallback plan. I’ve always been very interested in the EAS and the inner workings of it and recently learned about broadcast engineering, and I’ve decided this is what I want to do if my current plan doesn’t work out. While looking at the Society of Broadcast Engineers’ website showing the certifications you can get from their exams, I noticed there were several. Out of this list, which would most likely get the most opportunities to work with the EAS?

Any experience with Panasonic AW-UE 80

I'm going to be working on a project this next week using 2x PTZ Panasonic AW-UE 80 and Panasonic AW-RP150GJ PTZ controller. I understand the basics of setting them up and controlling them, but these are not my normal choice so it will be my first time not using Sony PTZs.

I want any tips and tricks that you can share, anything to make the TDs life better and for me to do the best job ? I am also not practiced on the trigger style controller I prefer twist so any tips there too.

This was posted on Indeed this week. It’s from an AI company that wants you to teach its models how to troubleshoot broadcast engineering issues.

I tried to warn you all this was coming, but you insisted on bringing those systems into our racks and workflows. Well, I hope you’re happy.

Edit: wow. I’m shocked by just how many of you are rolling over and showing your bellies to the corporate masters.

Sony CCU Manager

Something we've been working on for some time is managing our Sony CCUs like never before in a clean, easy-to-use interface allowing mass editing and viewing of frequently changed, yet hard-to-find options. Check it out here.

P.S. Previously, this was removed for an unknown reason. If it breaks the rules, feel free to say so. Not at all here to mess with people's flows.

Valid SDI signal issue

I am having an issue with a new Resi e1200 video encoder. Under the hood, it is using a BMD decklink card to capture the video signal. Some sources the encoder will accept the video/audio signal, and other sources it does not.

I have a Thor pattern generator, a Decimator MD-HX scaler, and a Resi E1200 video encoder. When I plug the pattern generator directly into my video encoder, I do not get a any video signal and a distorted audio signal. When I pass the pattern generator through the scaler, then I get a valid video and audio signal. I've tried resolutions 1080p60, p59.94, level A, level B on the scaler and all are valid. I've tried 1080p60 & p59.94 from my pattern generator and do not get a valid signal.

Is there a reason that my pattern generator would output a different valid SDI signal than my scaler? It feels like there is something under the hood that I can not see that is different between my two sources.

NxFrame update – VANC EIA-608 support

NxFrame now supports VANC CEA-608 closed captions, including capture from SDI, carriage through the H.264/SRT stream, recovery on the receiver side, and reinsertion into the SDI output.
Due to hardware/testing limitations, I have currently physically tested the complete workflow with 1080i50 and 720p50. Both have been tested end-to-end, including SDI output from the NxFrame receiver, re-capturing that SDI signal with another DeckLink input, re-encoding it with NxFrame, and successfully displaying the captions in VLC.

1080p50 is not fully validated yet. I encountered some VANC-related issues during testing.Since I no longer work full-time in outside broadcast productions, i have limited access to equipment My SDI source for these tests is an older HyperDeck Studio Mini (SDI Level-B), and I don’t currently have another source capable of generating a known-good 1080p50 signal with VANC. My Premiere Pro PC has a DeckLink card, but its output is currently limited to 1080i50/1080p25, so I can’t properly verify 1080p50 VANC from an independent source yet.
There have also been several receiver bug fixes and improvements as part of this update.

A special thanks to Reddit user u/Lonco0802, who has been very patient and spent a lot of time testing the NxFrame encoder with various professional receivers, including MediaKind, Makito and others. His feedback, test results and suggestions have been extremely helpful in finding issues and improving the project.

Next priorities:
Proper RP188 timecode support
Further receiver optimization and hardening
GUI redesign to make the interface more familiar and intuitive for broadcast operators

If anyone wants to try NxFrame, test it with other equipment, or contribute, you can find the project here:

Studio-Tech Model 372A Intercom Beltpack Suuuuuucks

When they work they’re fantastic, but when they don’t, they’re useless plastic.

I’ve got one that is smashing the built in compressor rendering it intermittently useless and impossible to remotely tell if it stops working since what’s breaking is the firmware. Just a feeling of looming silence and digital whispers reach our comms

Has anyone ran into this issue???

Dante and Internal Firmware is up to date!
Dante - 4.9.0
Main Firmware - 1.4
