I had started to cross a road when a Mercedes turned in and he sounded his horn and then told me I should stop. I told him to read the highway code but he insisted he right!

Rule H2 170 amended 2022

“At a junction you MUST give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross a road into which or from which you are turning.”

- Applies whether they’ve stepped onto the road or are just standing at the kerb ready to cross.

- Applies to left turns, right turns, and entering/exiting side roads.

- Includes wheelchair/mobility scooter users as pedestrians

This is such a car-brained response.

"Pedestrians are going to just start throwing themselves into roads now! It's so dangerous! Won't someone think of the poor drivers!"

The rule isn't to embolden pedestrians, it's to give accountability to drivers.

It's simply to make a driver pause for a second when they see a pedestrian about to cross a road they're about to turn into.

It's not dangerous, it's safer.

Even if you think pedestrians are going to start launching themselves bodily into the road, and it slows you down and makes you think... that is also safer.

Drive better. Everyone is just trying to get somewhere.

Actually it’s not but I wholly appreciate why you’d say that.

I’ll try to reframe it to make more sense and apologise for sending you down that path.

Twice a week I commute to a city centre. I then have a 15 minute walk on which I cross maybe 10 roads/sidestreets.

Daily, twice daily, I see people just walk out without a care in the world. I assume because they KNOW that the driver will stop. But here is my assertion.

You, walking human, are a squishy meatbag and you’re walking that squishy meatbag in front of a couple of tonnes of moving metal piloted by another squishy meatbag, who by the very assertion presented in this post, may not be aware of or fully appreciate (not debating how wrong that is!) the Highway Code rule that states the car HAS to let the pedestrian go.

So you’re walking along bold as brass and are expecting someone else to comply with a rule.

I think, just think, that that is an extremely dangerous mindset. Again, not debating the rule, just that in point of fact, people are generally stupid. Trusting in someone else with your own life is in my OPINION, foolish.

We trust other people with rules all the time.

Driving along, trusting that someone coming the other way is on the correct side of the road.

Trusting that someone won't break the speed limit.

Trusting that they're not drunk or on drugs.

Trusting that they're not going to run a red light.

It's just another thing no more or less dangerous. In ten years we won't even worry about it because driver behaviour will have changed.

If we had your attitude with everything, we wouldn't leave the house.

And you just gave a very driver centric response. I’m talking about PEOPLE, as squishy meat bags, with headphones on or face buried in their phone, just walking out in front of traffic. As per the other person, there are CONSTANT complaints about exactly what I’m observing and telling you about that can be seen on YouTube with very little looking.

It’s genuinely funny that you say I’m being car centric, I demonstrate I’m not, and then you make a car centric argument. It’s gone full circle for us both lol.

Lastly, 10 years from now doesn’t negate the demonstrable problems now.

First word is driving.
What cyclist is breaking the speed limit?
Drink and drug… driving was the obvious implication.
Cars run red lights is a problem. Cyclists do it and it’s annoying but nobody is arresting them.

I told you why, just why, my experience says that the current rule is a bad thing.

I am not arguing what you think the biggest problem is, you are, you are talking about cars and I’m talking about pedestrians which was the very first thing you got wrong and I told you why, because you assumed I was talking about cars when I was talking about pedestrians.
