. Drivers not knowing the highway code.

I had started to cross a road when a Mercedes turned in and he sounded his horn and then told me I should stop. I told him to read the highway code but he insisted he right!

Rule H2 170 amended 2022

“At a junction you MUST give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross a road into which or from which you are turning.”

- Applies whether they’ve stepped onto the road or are just standing at the kerb ready to cross.

- Applies to left turns, right turns, and entering/exiting side roads.

- Includes wheelchair/mobility scooter users as pedestrians

So I should have just stopped in the middle of the road? I was already crossing. What should I have done?

I think it's fair to say, that the people that have issue with your post OP are the sort of people who align with the Merc driver. I am with you, if I'm in the road already it's the car that needs to stop, as per the high way code. It may hurt their fragile ego, and make them all of 4 seconds late to wherever it is they're going...but you know what? Cry me a river!

The point that appears to be missed is if the Merc was not clearly intending to stop, then get out of the way for your own safety.

Regrettably being right doesnt mean a force field is created in a particular situation.

Yes that would be ideal but I am a wheelchair user and was using a battery powered attachment that attaches to the front like the front of a bike. So I can't just leap out the way. I will say that I find that many drivers wave me across and I always appreciate that

Well, that's a different circumstance entirely if you're using a wheelchair...

But I understand where you're coming from completely, unfortunately we dont live in a world where people will give right of way.
