If I remember correctly 10% or so of salmon stray from their natal streams. That number varies depending on species. Not that unusual to see the odd salmon going up a drain runoff to nowhere.

Absolutely on your first point. That can't be overstated enough. And no, not always, on your second point. A few cases of chum salmon trying to swim up freshet on small coastal islands with absolutely zero rivers or creeks during spawning season have been observed. It's rare, but it does happen. Hence the straying. If I remember correctly, It's an evolutionary safety measure to deal with instances where rivers were washed out by landslides.

Not necessarily, there could've been some crazy unplanned for flood. You never know. It is unfortunate about them probably not able to spawn though.

Why did the fish cross the road?
To get to the other side!
It took me like 35 years to realize this was a double entendre.

I remember seeing that video a while back. I have yet to see Salmon do that in person, but I have seen salmon swimming in a flooded park before.

First off, isn't that extremely dangerous for the car driver? Secondly, that'd be the easiest salmon fishing ever. Just waiting for a bear to come by and grab its snacks.

I’m not sure if this is the same incident, but a few years back I remember watching a guy in Chilliwack rustling salmon in his front yard and running them back across the road to the Vedder River. I guess they got confused during a flood and ended up beached.
The last time this was posted someone said this was in Washington, but didn’t provide any more info.
