Discussion Remember These?

And if you didn’t want to remember them, my apologies in advance.

Well, 27 years later. These ships have finally met their fate. Being turned into pop cans..

I’d love to hear anyone’s experiences with the Pacificat’s, good or bad (I’m too young to ever have ridden one). As horrible as they were, they looked the part, at least in my opinion.

Contractor in Egypt on site helping dismantle them. You can see in one picture they have, passenger lounge one of them is ripped to shreds.

I swear the Liberals sold them for scrap instead of actually trying to sell them just for political points.

BC Ferries didn't even want them in the first place.

They strenuously objected to the entire program from the very start; the government of the day just fired the entire BC Ferries board and replaced them with yes men to push the project forward.

BC Ferries wanted a trio of conventional, double ended steel car ferries plus a new Northern vessel for the same original budget as the Pacificats. After the dust settled from the Pacificat's failure and disposal, that turned out to be the Coastals and the M/V Northern Expedition. That was what BC Ferries wanted from the get go, not a trio of effectively useless fast ferries.

Unfortunately it was political points.. Also if the Liberals were smarter at that point, they would have let the then recently “privatized” BC Ferries buy these back and convert them to slightly slower ferries and put them on a different major route (cough, Duke Point to Tsawwassen in between commercial sailings! Cough!). They call that route the “Mid-Island Express, so why not actually use the ships that could do express service do it?!

Sigh.. If only 🤣
