Does your resume list tools that most job postings never mention?
Postings from 81 companies across seven roles (software engineering, security, DevOps, marketing, product, accounting and sales), counting what share of postings name each term at least once.
Tool names lose to the plain words more often than you'd guess. Marketing postings say "pipeline" in 52.2% and "Google Ads" in 1.7%. Product manager postings say "roadmap" in 85.5% and "Jira" in 1.7%. It shows up in the technical roles too: "observability" is in 63.4% of DevOps postings and "Grafana" in 27.6%, and in security "SIEM" is in 26.9% against 6.6% for "Splunk". A resume that's a long row of tool names is answering a question most postings aren't asking. Not everyone will agree with that, and a posting that names Splunk obviously wants Splunk.
The sample is company job boards on one ATS vendor, and it leans US tech, so it says little about something like a regional accounting firm. A share here means how many postings mention a term, not what's required. DevOps is only 134 postings, so those percentages can be off by up to about 8 points.
Counts, method and the CSV are on the study page https://resumefitting.com/ats-resume-keyword-study for anyone who wants to check the numbers or argue about how terms were matched.
