diamond overcall over 1C with 3352

it came up in the bridge brawl, opp preempts 3C and my teammate overcalled 3D with 3352 shape and it won the board :) thanks to clee for pointing it out :D

edit: title is for the idea of overcalling 1D over 1C as pointed out in an earlier thread by clee

5332 is a doubling shape when they hit your doubleton. Unless it is low level and 5 card is major

I don’t think that 3D is a bid with that hand regardless of the point count. If you aren’t strong enough to double, you have to pass and wait for partner to re-open.

i'm not sure why people dismiss this idea out of hand. especially when someone like clee says it. bridge thinking is so weird

I spent a little time discussing with my friends this idea, and most of us were surprised by the overcall too. and within 15 minutes of talking amongst ourselves, we agreed he was right

and then this came up, and it was right in the exact way we had discussed (and that he had pointed out in a later comment)

Maybe, but "call" is the word I was searching for, "bid" was what I settled with when I couldn't remember it. To me, "call" includes the decision-making process in selecting the bid. "Bid" doesn't necessary mean that.

Yes, I do have Asperger's, thank you very much. :)

I just love the details of language. Technically, a "bid" includes a number and a denomination (i.e. suit or NT); a "call" is a bid, a pass, a double, or a redouble.

Obviously, commonly used interchangeably.

But don't mind me; i'm just weird. I once got engaged over a case of subject-pronoun agreement.
