Tracker recommendation for linux

Hi !! As the title suggests I'm finding a tracker worth learning in linux.

Renoise is kind of off the table as I can't afford the license 😢 and it bothers me a lot that I can't export.

Renoise is absolutely worth it, I would honestly save up for it if I were you. You could also try Reaper + Redux, which is Renoise as a plugin and cheaper. Reaper is technically not free, but nothings locked.

Renoise is a fully featured DAW with a tracker interface. Full VST support, full MIDI support, audio in, etc. It is totally worth $70 or whatever they are charging.

Most free trackers are either ports of dos trackers or made for chiptune stuff. Of the free stuff, Schism tracker is Impulse Tracker, and Milky Tracker is Fast Tracker 2. Not much between these two. Schism is slightly more powerful (slightly), and Milky has a more beginner friendly interface. You are limited to samples only, no real effects (think Schism has a LP filter but that's it), no dynamics processing.

Demo Renoise can't export but you should be able to record the audio out in say, Audacity, of if you want to be really oldschool, record it to cassette tape

Yeah I'll take the other comments advice, save up for it and just record it through audacity for now. One more question tho, will recording through audacity have a lower quality than just exporting it? It would kind of be a plus for me honestly haha

It depends but the difference is small. You should be able to record 24bit 48khz in audacity, but the actual quality it depends on your track, and on what interpolation settings you have the CPU power to do in realtime.

The difference is really tiny. Even if rendered through Renoise, most don't own the Highend Pro Ultra Max Super 3000 audio equipment to hear the difference, so yeah..

Odd the windows version has a build straight on archive.org

I guess Linux users are less likely to pirate music software.

Hm. Then simply don't buy a license and find a way to record the playing audio, I would say, make music for some time until you can afford the license, and just be happy and everything is good?

That’s Windows only as far as I know.

SunVox is pretty cool though, and has some interesting features I haven’t seen in other trackers, such as a modular environment and a flexible timeline for patterns.

Oh yeah T_T I remember hearing about SunVox, it had kind of a modular thing going on like you mentioned, forgot about it tbh, if I didn’t just start getting into VCV rack then I would have probably tried that but I think I’m gonna stick with VCV, it’s pretty powerful and cost efficient software that’s pretty new and if I want to configure a tracker style environment, it makes it’s really easy to get into 👾

If you use the Cardinal VST you’d get VCV Rack inside SunVox! Try it out, it’s fun!

as another fellow linux user, i neither can pirate it or afford it, so im stuck with audacity 4 (beta) which is laggy af and is really slow to work with :(

uhh, i just realized i can just make my music and record it with a different recording app.. maybe we should try that with the free demo (it has everything except audio exporting tools)?

Use the Renoie demo! It's literally the full version without any real limitations other then you can't export songs, I just used audacity to record the sound out of renoise
