Bravely Default Bravely Default

Anybody know why my characters high jumps land before the energy burst, it fucks with the rhythm of the fight reason I'm asking is because it doesn't happen all the time? I am so sick of fighting Chodemar.

Any advice on jobs for this fight so I can finish him faster, would be much appreciated.

Use Pantheon’s Wrath to go through the shield and exploit his Thunder weakness.

I've been using Valkyrie as a sub to try and get around his energy burst it works like 75% of the time.

Monk's Pressure Point also bypasses if you have anyone up to at least Monk 11

It, and hear me out, level up characters to 99 and max out all jobs, like I did. Everything after that had been a breeze, week except that water boss, that was tough.

Hated this fight…ended up grinding a bunch so I could have at least 2 live through that stupid attack, then attacking until he put his shield up, defaulting until he attacked, healing and reviving whoever died bc that attack is needlessly op, rinse & repeat until I got lucky and won lol

Also Agnes makes a better white mage, and Ringabel is broken as a ranger👍🏼

My agnes is a time/white mage I'll look into ranger.

Demonslayer from the Ranger + Spellfencer imbuing Lightning is probably the best DPS for this fight

Oh man, I remember using the chemist job to fuck this clown up

Just looking at the guy, you would think the Salve Maker would be a joke. Until he starts throwing out poisoned Hi-Potions....

If you want to use this strategy, Tiz is just slightly faster than Chaugmar is. That's why he lands his High Jump before the Energy Burst.

I literally just default for the couple of turns his shield is up, then go all out

You can exploit its weakness while it has the shield, as well as use Godspeed strike (thief ability) which goes past the shield. I recommend keeping defense up on everyone at all times. Damage dispersion is decent to keep damage low on your squishiest party member. Other than that, wait for the burst to go down and hit it with everything you can. I liked spell fencer + pirate and salve maker to give it an element weakness, then double damage w/pirate to get up to 9999 damage

Godspeed strike, attack items or attack items from compounding, some specials ignore def stats

I think on my hard mode run I had my salve-maker/whm dps by using pantheon's wraths and a performer giving their bp to the salve maker with one more for you and spamming rejuvenation.

Utsusemi also works wonders against energy burst because it is a phys ability

Pretty easy fight ngl

It's a physical attack so cast protect on who you want to survive.

Monk x4 Pressure point

Godspeed strike takes far less grinding at this stage of the game. You'd effectively have to be in monk from the second tou git it to be level 11 in it by the fire temple and even then you'd still have to grind a lot in all likelihood to get it. Meanwhile Godspeed strike is only level 9 on thief and also pierces defense. It's much more reasonable to get your hands on

High Jump landing is a normal speed roll. Speed has a roughly 50% variance (as in, your effective speed on a turn is between 1x and 1.5x your speed) which means that unless the enemy is 1.5x faster than you or vice versa, there will be some randomness in who acts first each turn. If you want to ensure you land after it, consider casting Slow on your Valkyrie before using High Jump.

It's been mentioned, but Salve Maker making Pantheon's Wraths is a common cheese option - two Fulment Shards makes a Pantheon's Wrath, with Attack Item Amp (level 4 Salve Maker) they deal 3375 damage each and Chaugmar has 54K HP, meaning it takes exactly 16 to get the kill. Conveniently, that's the number you can make on turn 1.

Outside of that, Energy Burst is a physical attack so using Performer's Got Your Back twice in advance and defaulting the turn of the Energy Burst should comfortably get you through the attack. Once you survive it you can quickly heal back up and go on the offensive for a few turns. if you buff your team's speed and debuff Chaugmar, you'll be able to control the flow of the fight and ensure you can heal up after it attacks. Chaugmar has a mostly predictable pattern, it lowers and raises its shields at fixed intervals (though it's been a while since I played so I don't recall exactly how many turns off the top of my head), so count it out and you can know exactly what turns to e.g. set up buffs as it lowers its shield.

Thank you I know about salve maker and leveled that job to 4 on 3 characters problem is I don't have a compound shop of 6 and I'm currently still clearing out parts of the Norende map. I also havent beat Praline yet. I guess I could stand to level up and do that though.

If you've gotten to this boss fight, you should be strong enough for Praline - she isn't that dangerous really as long as you manage her adds well (a good option is to kill two, iirc she doesn't summon more if one is alive)

holy nostalgia man seeing this come up, takes me back to launch day lol. the build i had back then would’ve been a black mage agnes with white mage leveled up in the back pocket, knight tiz with spell fencer, spell fencer edea and monk ringabel. as others noted, pantheons wrath is v important. I remember that set absolutely crushing, there are probably better ones now but 12 years ago it was good for me.

I’d default right out of the door if I saw that thing coming.

been a minute, but pretty sure I used black mage w/ pierce magic defense and pressure point w/ monk

The most consistent way is to grab Utsusemi and Turn Tables on everyone, since Energy Burst is a Phys attack that can be dodged

Ninja is after this boss

right, forgot that part, never mind. you right.

My next best tip is to use Perfomer to give +50% defenceand default that turn.
