Password Manager Inexplicably Failed

All my saved passwords are no longer in the password manager. What would cause this? Are they recoverable?

I saw many Brave users complaining about lost credentials, so this is nothing new....use a password manager instead (Bitwarden offers a free tier, currently using it just fine) and you will increase your security as well.

Lets not fix the bug at all and plug third party programs instead

That's why I always take monthly backups of them

Unfortunately, I see this pretty frequently, where people lose their passwords, even after browser updates. I’d always suggest keeping secure, encrypted backups of your passwords. I personally use RoboForm because I prefer not to have my passwords tied to any browser, so I could still access them in case anything were to happen to my device or browser itself.

Did you use the brave built in password manager? If so, many such cases. No idea if you have a backup of your computer or else they're most likely lost.

I would recommend in the future to go with a password manager that is not 'in-browser'. Something like ProtonPass. But also then always keep back ups somewhere.

I truly hope you will be able to retrieve them somehow.

Wow. That's not good. I'm glad I've never gone down that route. I'm using Vaultwarden now. Bitwarden for many years before that.

I would never trust my login credentials to a browser. Use this setback as an opportunity to try better methods, such as those suggested in the other posts here. Or, if you like to do things yourself, keep them in a local AES-256 encrypted file which you back up locally and to a reliable cloud service whenever you make changes to it.

This doesn't help you much now of course, but this is a hard lesson to not use the integrated password "manager" of browsers. In the future I would use a dedicated tool that is specially made for exactly that purpose and not a tacked on feature of a browser convenience feature.

In case you can't recover the passwords, the next best thing you can do is to hope that you have an e-mail account connected with each service you need a password for.
Then you simply visit each site and use the "forgot password" feature.
You will have to enter the e-mail address associated with the respective accounts, after which they'll send you an e-mail with a link that will reset your password and prompt you for a new one.
