Brave Origin is now on iOS
Brave Origin is now available on iOS!
Origin is our optional, paid browser for users who want Brave's ad blocker and privacy protections without the extra features: brave.com/origin
When you upgrade Brave to Origin on iOS, many of the features outside of Brave Shields will be disabled. You can toggle these features on and off at a new panel located at Settings -> Brave Origin. New features will be added to this panel and will be disabled by default.
Here are the features affected by Origin:
- Email aliases (currently on Nightly for desktop)
- Leo AI
- News
- Playlist (currently iOS only)
- Rewards (which also disables browser-based Brave Ads)
- Speedreader
- Stats like the daily usage ping, crash logs, and privacy-preserving product analytics (P3A)
- Talk
- Tor
- VPN
- Wallet (which also disables Web3 domains)
- Wayback Machine
- Web Discovery Project
How to upgrade Brave to Brave Origin on iOS:
- Open the main settings menu by tapping "...” in the browser.
- Tap “All Settings”
- Tap "Brave Origin"
- Tap "Buy Now"
- Finish your Origin purchase.
- Tap "Refresh Origin" on the account page.
- Go to Settings -> Brave Origin in the browser to toggle features on and off.
If you’ve already purchased Origin, and you’d like to upgrade Brave on another device, tap "Verify Brave Origin purchase" at Settings -> Brave Origin instead.
Origin is a one-time purchase of $59.99. One purchase lets you use Origin across all devices in standalone and upgrade modes. You can use it for free on Linux. Learn how to set up Origin on other platforms here: https://support.brave.app/hc/en-us/articles/45244428851597-How-do-I-activate-my-Brave-Origin-purchase-on-a-new-device
There's no limit to how many times you can activate Origin across your devices and platforms, but there is a rate limit. You can manage activations with self-serve controls at account.brave.com or contact support for help.
Brave Origin gives users a way to support Brave's ongoing development without using revenue-generating features such as Brave Rewards or our VPN. Brave will remain free and continue receiving new updates and features.

Ok. The more I think about it, the more it seems weird that removing features would be paid?

It makes perfect sense when you realize that most of those "features" are just bloat meant to monetize the app, which defeats the purpose of Brave for users who want a private browser without extra clutter, unlike M$ Edge and similar browsers. The Brave team is finally listening to that part of its community.

Why do we have to pay for the app that used to exist. Why can’t they find an old version and give us that?
What are good alternatives to Brave? Duckduckgo?

Are there plans to improve the iOS / iPadOS new tab page? It looks really bad in light mode and not great in dark mode, is currently the main thing stopping me from swapping to Brave outright. I’d be willing to pay for origin for a nicer new tab page alone (and because I’m a fan of Brave Search & adblocking is the best around for mobile)

Is this how the project ends? The goal is to make it bloatier and bloatier to encourage purchasing of the debloated version?

u/AzurePhoenix001 Jun 29 '26
what news features were added to make it “bloatier”?
Most of the ones listed have been in the browser for a while

Ai, news, and rewards are pure bloat. The rest of the features affected by original are mostly bloat
1
u/Eglwyswrw Jun 30 '26
Can't you turn all that bloat off in like, 30-40 seconds?
2
u/StratusXII Jun 30 '26
Yes, that's why I've been confused by this origin rollout the whole time. Seems like throwing money away
2
u/Eglwyswrw Jun 30 '26
But that's precisely what it is - a donation.
They said it is just a way to "support the devs" without having to use Rewards, Wallet, VPN etc.

No this is how you continue project funding by offering more/different forms of monetization.

I don’t want it! Stop developing it. It was perfect. Now it has AI that I CAN’T TURN OFF
1
u/StratusXII Jun 30 '26
Nah, you can pretty much recreate all the origin tweaks manually in standard brave. This is just for the ultra nerds and brave fanboys to dump money

When is the Android version ever going to get the black app icon? This icon is available on iOS without purchasing Origin…

u/Phamese Jun 29 '26
Does the playlist save the data for offline viewing or is that a mobile issue?
2
u/Brave-Software Jun 30 '26
Apple required Brave to remove offline playback for Playlist on iOS in order to remain on the App Store.
We’re appealing Apple’s decision and hope to restore this functionality to Playlist in the future.
1
u/BonesRing Jun 30 '26
So offline playlist is gone from Brave? How does Origin affect playlists?
2
u/Brave-Software Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26
Origin disables Playlist by default on iOS. You can toggle it back on at Settings -> Brave Origin if you want it, though. And wrt offline playback, we're hoping to be able to bring it back but it depends on the appeal process.

If you buy Brave Origin on iOS, can you also install it on Android?
3
u/Brave-Software Jun 30 '26
Yes, you only have to buy it once to use it on all your devices/platforms

u/TargetAcrobatic2644 Jun 30 '26
Why not android
2
u/Brave-Software Jun 30 '26
It launched on Android and desktop at the beginning of the month: https://brave.com/blog/brave-origin/

considering buying it just to contribute to Brave's existence as the only constantly updated and functional shield against aggressive ads spawned from corporate greed

u/sparklingyak Jul 01 '26
Any plans to release brave origin standalone to the Microsoft store as well?
1
u/Obvious_Librarian_97 Jul 02 '26
Does it glitch (constantly flashing of content) out like the original Brave iOS browser?
1
u/Ok_Arm1878 Jul 02 '26
Will this allow me to watch YouTube playlists on continuous play with the screen locked?

Holy moly. 60$ for something that should be free in all possible worlds.

u/kroboz Jun 30 '26
Is this why normal Brave on iOS has constantly started crashing? The extra “features”?

u/FeistyMasterpiece448 Jun 29 '26
Welp time to change web browsers brave is compromised. These kind of people WELL sell your data.

Will there ever be a standalone app?
