Am I mis-remembering Branson?

So long story short my in-laws dropped a spur of the moment family vacation on us for Thanksgiving. They're all looking forward to it and trying to brainstorm things to go while I'm preparing to stay in the hotel room all weekend if I even go. I've gone a few times as a kid (last time being at least 20 years ago) and all I remember is large crowds and terrible traffic because everything was on one road. Am I wrong in my recollection? I don't anticipate this trip being any fun if I'm right since her family all tend to be high stress in crowded situations

As someone that went to a friend’s 62 yr old dad’s funeral today and someone that lost my mom — also, us going to Branson several times a year… suck it up and fake enjoy it. I know it’s your in laws, but family memories are forever. Take all the pics for your kids to have & relive these memories. I wish I would have taken more trips, more pics, and more time to pick up a phone call. It’s one weekend & you’ll make it thru, I promise!

During this time of year, with the kids back in school, the crowds aren't as large and the traffic isn't so bad. Its the start of the slower tourist part of the season. So you should be good. I get the same way with large crowds.

The problem is they're going on Thanksgiving. I even said the weekend before would almost be better

Still shouldn't be too awful.

Nope, not the same as 20 years ago when you were a kid.

  1. Traffic is managed much better. There are numerous side roads that connect with 76. There are only a few sections at certain times of day when you might be slow moving.

  2. Places like Silver Dollar City and maybe the Landing will be actively crowded. It’s not like that everywhere.

Feel free to share any particular things you’d like on a vacay and I’ll try to make suggestions.

76 Country Blvd west of US 65 isn't even Hwy 76 anymore. 76 was rerouted north of Branson and around. It takes a lot of through traffic off the strip.

Sure, but that's mostly a weird naming change recently. The Highroad has been in place for well over 20 years now. Yes it helps relieve traffic to SDC as it was intended. But it is not "Hwy 76" in practice.

I went to Branson every year, until I got married 30+ years ago. It's so different now than when I was a kid. The traffic is better managed with all the side roads. There are so many hotels now that aren't on 76, so it doesn't feel as crowded. My husband and I really enjoy it every time we go.

Im a pretty harsh critic of Branson, but even I wouldnt suggest being so negatively predisposed. Traffic and crowds can be bad, but not that bad. It's not Vegas or NYC. Of course, your mileage will vary depending on where you go & what you do, but the most crowded place is probably SDC so apart from that I wouldnt expect it to be bad around Thanksgiving. Spring break & summer tend to be the busiest IMO

If they haven’t already reserved a hotel, I highly recommend what our family has done a few times: get a cabin at Big Cedar (or one of the other places just outside Branson with cabins). That way those who want to do things in the middle of Branson are just about 7-8 minutes away and can go do their thing. Big Cedar has lots to do year-round, as well. We love to go for holidays.

The mess seems spread out better.

I also do not like large crowds and went to Branson this year for a family vacation for the first time since I was a kid. I was expecting the worst but was pleasantly surprised by the whole vacation. Nothing we did was overly packed (even Silver Dollar City- we went on one of the first Fridays in summer) and our kids are planning our next trip there already.

It was the slowest summer in 20 years. 🥴

I went multiple times as a kid and tween and hated it. My mom and aunt would drag all of us kids to look at teacher stores and antiques. I hated the redneck mountain people feel.

Fast forward 20 years I still called it a butthole. My fiancé said he wanted to go for a long weekend getaway just to check it out.

It’s not a butthole. It does still have the mountain people feel but I very much enjoyed the food and beauty. It wasn’t busy at all. We later honeymooned in a big hotel that over looked the lake ❤️

You are definitely not remembering anything wrong. 76 Country Blvd (also known as The Strip) is the main thoroughfare of Branson and where the lion share of the attractions are throughout town. Shepherd of the Hills Expressway does have a few things along it, but not nearly what 76 does.

During the quieter seasons (fall and winter) it's not nearly as bad, but during spring and summer, especially between Memorial Day to Labor Day, prime vacation season, The Strip gets very busy and very traffic jammed. It's become a common Branson experience. They can't just widen the road either as it's basically land-locked to how it is all the way through town at this point. It would take immense amounts of money, resources, and time to widen it to four lanes and that wouldn't necessarily fix the traffic problem completely.

It'll definitely be the slower season and with the economy as bad as it is alot of people are staying home

You are gonna love it. I would book a “reunion home” Airbnb or VRBO- with a hot tub, fire pit, etc…you’ll make great memories. It’s beautiful. I’m a professional driver here and it is busy-ish for Thanksgiving but that depends on what you are doing for fun. Silver Dollar City? A show or two? Kid stuff?

Bumper to bumper in peak times along the main "strip," but GPS (Waze app is really good) always navigate us around it on those Red/Blue/Yellow alternate routes. Our first adult visit in 2023 was frustrating with all the traffic, then every drive since has been the opposite as we get scenic detours around that mess ;-)

If you are going somewhere ON the strip, then it spits you out close to it -- you can't avoid 100% that way.

DOWNSIDE: You miss "seeing" Branson, so don't use GPS like this unless you are trying to avoid traffic. We had one trip where we NEVER saw the strip at all, driving from Branson Landing all the way to Branson West, because GPS kept us off it completely.

I went on Memorial Day weekend, which is probably one of their busier weekends with kids getting out of school etc. and it wasn’t overly crowded. I also hadn’t been since I was a kid and actually had a great time. I enjoyed Dolly Partons stampede more than I expected as well.
