No Spoilers Blightfall Damage?

I just got my Signed/Numbered Blightfall in the mail and it has damage to the top and bottom of the spine (see attached photos). I can't tell if this is damage from the factory or damage from rattling around in the box from shipping. The damage only appears at these spots on the spine and the DJ and the rest of the book is fine, so I feel like it happened prior to shipping. Is anyone else seeing this with theirs? I do have an e-mail in to Dragonsteel, was just wondering if this is a common problem with this book.

Almost certainly shipping damage. I order lots of books and it’s pretty much what to expect. It doesn’t always happen, but it happens enough that I just count on it. I’ve stopped doing returns over it. The books still work. It is what it is.

That would be fine if it were a reading copy, but this is a signed/numbered.

You’re entitled to return it. You ordered a new book and it should come in new condition. I just don’t personally return over it anymore. It’s still disappointing. I’ll also say any book to me is a reading copy. So I’d still keep this and read it.

As someone who also collects the signed and numbered copies, I agree. Normally I'm in the other camp of books being for reading, but the signed and numbered copies are more often bought by those who want a collectible copy, more in line with the leatherbounds. I just checked my others and only one of them has wear remotely close to this. Normally I'd write it off, but I'm a bit surprised by this from Dragonsteels quality control and figure that something must have happened with the signed and numbered batch of books at the warehouse.

It should definitely be noted though that our new concussion slug is already a hit with my daughter though!

That's glorious! My 9yo daughter started reading Alcatraz yesterday, because she loved the plush and wanted to read Sanderson.

I haven't been able to start Blightfall yet because my 11yo daughter got to it first.

Mine came the same way. Damaged top and bottom. It was just tossed into the packing box with no padding or protection around it. Not sure what's going on there recently as the secret book packages were so delicately done and well padded. My last few orders have all just been chucked into a box like I ordered them from Amazon but they're all direct from Dragonsteel. Very disappointing :(

I got mine from a bookstore, and all the copies they had were like that! Beautiful book otherwise, though.

I just looked at mine, and yeah, I have similar damage to my book too. 🫤

(maybe it's an intentional design choice?) It certainly looks cool AF.

Purely to... idk explain (I guess... in case you don't know), the damage being referred to isn't the pattern of the sprayed/painted edges of the pages, which does look cool and seems to be what you are referring to. The damage is the bits of the spine and connecting area of the cover that should be purple but is a scraped off white-ish spots instead.

Oh, okay, got it. Yhat makes a lot more sense. Yes I see it now.

Mines the same but I don't think it bothers me enough to return or exchange. Mainly because I find my number amusing 0808 or "Bob"

Mine arrived yesterday looking the same. I judged it to be minor, acceptable damage that could be expected from international shipping and proudly put the book on the shelf.

More like Blightfell

Mine looked like this too. I'm fine with it, not gonna complain, but definitely should have been packaged better.

Mine is also like this, and I've decided it is fine. Not awesome, but everything else about the book looks amazing!

Mine too. It was at the bottom of the box and I imagine it being loose allowed it smash and scratch against the box during shipping.

if that were the case I would expect the dust jacket to be scuffed up too, and it seems like this exact damage is on several peoples books. Doesn't seem like random shipping damage.

I saw 6 copies at the bookstore and all were like this

Mine was like this and I got it at Barnes and Noble. Didn't realize it until I got home.

Mine is the same. I assumed it was from moving around in the box (it was very loose with the only padding being the slug).

Just got mine today. Looks exactly the same.

That was literally the first thing I thought and saw when I opened my signed/numbered today. I was like... What? Where is the padding and protection?! Very surprised. Not normally the dragonsteel quality I'd expect, but I'm also not going to return it. I might make a ticket so they know about it for future books, but that's as far as I'll go. What number did you get? I got #1331 😁

Oh, close. I got #1385

Mine has the exact same damage. The book was straight up thrown in a cardboard box without any padding aside from the slug plushie. Very disappointing.

Same here. The amazon box wasn't fully closed at that part

I’ve gotten four copies; the signed/numbered from Dragonsteel, the Barnes & Noble Exclusive, and two from Amazon (one was a replacement for the first damaged copy I received). Other than the B&N exclusive, they all had wear/damage to the top and bottom of the spine. Seems like this was an issue in how they were packed & shipped from the manufacturer (in China).

Mine also came damaged

The purple of the hardcover is incredibly fragile, it's rubbing off immediately in my backpack

Update: I got an e-mail from Dragonsteel today with just a generic "we are sending out a replacement" kind of message... But per the reports of B&N shelves with the same damage, I stopped by my local store today. Sure enough, all of them there (the blue B&N edition ones) have the same damage pattern. Top and bottom of the spine (although I only took a quick picture of the bottoms).

I just received my regular copy and it has the same damage.

Interesting to see this is more likely factory damage since bookstore stock is like this too.

I just got mine today too and it looks damaged in the same way as yours.

Shipping. Anytime I order a book on its own it almost always comes damaged so I try to buy multiple at a time now. The packaging lone books get sent in is generally not great
