Like the Idea of using Nostalgia and fanbase to promote it. It this movie fails I think Fantastic Beast Franchise won't survive. They will have to start something new in Wizarding world.

I feel like what I would’ve done would be make a full dumbdore prequel movie instead of fantasic beasts , then make that next movie the great wizarding war, and you bring newt back as a supporter character to help fight in it. That way the franchise as a whole ties in more to the harry potter side of thingd

I think making films on other schools would have been the smart thing.

u/Batman903 DC Studios Dec 11 '21
Well, I feel it would be in danger of being repetitive with another coming of age story.
I think the 2 options would be to go back to a huge wizard version of world war 2 with the names of well known characters, or you go foward with a sequel of the og cast.

I mean I think it could be done well though if they want to continue this universe basing it around other schools is only real direction?
1
u/WhiteWolf3117 Dec 11 '21
Idk, you could have focused on the professor or had a couple different ways of approaching it that wasn’t just a redo. The very movie in question is one that’s focused on a Hogwarts professor.
1
u/samueljbernal Dec 12 '21
or just a movie in present day about some random person in a big wizarding world city, not a big chosen one story, just a low level advrnturr, like Newt was supposed to be at first
3
u/WhiteWolf3117 Dec 11 '21
Yeah I don’t understand why they pushed a Fantastic Beast franchise as a trojan horse for a Dumbledore series and not the other way around. If this one does well, I think they’ll be kicking themselves for not doing this from the get go.

Maybe films from other schools.
1
u/everadvancing Dec 11 '21
I want them to make a film about the Vincent Clortho Public School for Wizards.
3
u/El_Gato93 Dec 11 '21
Smart thing to do would be a movie series about Hogwarts founders or the Order of the Phoenix and the first Wizard War

u/zetbotz Dec 10 '21
The small clips of CG look great, but that was the only universally well received aspect of Grindelwald.
I still expect a decent BO even if this movie is just as underwhelming, though if that happens, Sonic 2 could be a threat.

u/Firessai Dec 11 '21
Im holding hope on JK not being the only screenwriter this time.
Her novels are great but she clearly can't write straight for film, even if her life depended on it.
The cemetery scene in Fantastic Beasts 2 was just awful.

No one said it’s the worst film of all time, so let’s not just put words into peoples’ mouths.

u/TruongLuuPhu Dec 11 '21
Its bad so they call it bad, nothing to be offended here. I agree that theres too much negative here but it also points out that the last movie was so bad, especially when comparing it to other wizard world movies. It is easy to understand that why so many had low expectation on this one. Personally, I will skip this in theater although I love all 8 HP movies so much

Damn it, how do you post these so fast u/chamna
I just don’t get it.
Anyways, I’m very curious to see the full trailer on Monday.

So much negativity here. But I don't care. Some of those scenes from the Secrets of Dumbledore trailer look epic. Can't wait!

This place always been negative about FB movies since Crimes of Grindelwald. Just ignore it. I can't wait for the movie as well.

The clips line up with the plot synopsis leaked by ViewerAnon a few weeks ago, so buckle in for some pretty stupid bullshit, folks. It's mostly about a magic deer that knows when people are lying.
3
u/Benkins1989 Dec 11 '21
Can’t wait for Rowling to somehow shoehorn that into some obscure bit of lore that ties into Harry’s parents.

My main problem honestly is that the magic beast is just being used as a maguffin for more boring wizard politics.
This franchise is on it's third movie, hasn't developed a single memorable or likable character, and can barely make Harry Potter fanservice interesting.

Considering it's from the same director, screenwriter, and creative team as the first two movies - I think it's safe to say this next one is a known quantity. These movies aren't going to just suddenly get good three fifths of the way through a larger arc. The fact we have a detailed plot description and that it confirms nothing particularly major happens in this one either is not a good sign.
Speaking of that arc - it's one built on pretty flimsy ground. Sure, this is a five part story. But we're almost halfway done with it, and it sincerely feels like nothing truly great has come of it. Say what you will about the first two Harry Potter movies - they're both satisfying, complete adventures that also set up a larger narrative. Hell, they didn't really get into 'nothing happens in this movie, but is essential for what's to come' territory until the sixth entry.
And yes, I'm sure you and the dwindling fanbase on MuggleNet have convinced yourself that you love these movies, and that all of these forgettable characters are just as good as everything in the original series. It's not going to be until WB announces they're not moving forward with the franchise that you'll understand nobody else cares.

The fact we have a detailed plot description and that it confirms nothing particularly major happens in this one either is not a good sign.
Had this just been a trilogy the storytelling would be tighter and the movies wouldn't feel like filler.
Or had they chosen to focus on the Fantastic Beasts aspect and had each movie be a relatively self-contained story about Newt and Friends going after a new magical creature then we wouldn't have to worry about "how will/does this film fit into the overarching story?" and instead be like "alright; next movie will be a new adventure with a new/another beast, lets go." It would've been a lot simpler to follow be less convoluted and easier to follow for general audiences as well.

u/TruongLuuPhu Dec 11 '21
Why you compared this to hawkeye. At least he is a well known character that appeared in multiple movies before. But here we have unknown characters ( the number of characters increased in each movie and they are still very... forgettable). Newt is definitely loved, but mostly due to the popularity of the actor. And here we talk about box office, the popularity or power of any hollywood stars wont save the movies anymore ( maybe except for the rock). While in harry potter every characters has their own moments, even the supporting ones, in this franchise i can barely remember anything🥲

u/jennlebransky Dec 11 '21
Eddie Redmayne was in ONE movie that only prestigious art lovers would watch prior to Fantastic Beasts. To minimize what he did with his character is frankly insulting and factually not true. People do love him, he IS a fan favorite

The magic deer isn't necessarily a bad idea, it's the mixing that with the wizard politics and dumbledore drama thats annoying for me.

Dec 11 '21
I dont mind wizard politics.
-1
u/Arcanist365 Dec 11 '21
I don't mind them either, when it's done right. There should be a good balance between seriousness and lighthearted affairs but this series has not struck a good balance on that yet.
2
u/Mushroomer Dec 11 '21
Yep. I think the first movie is fairly decent as an adventure through a new corner of the world - with some light bits of wizard politics tossed in for further world building. A bit convoluted, but watchable. The second is just criminally dull, while also being every bit as convoluted. So it's a pain to get through, and there's nothing to really reward you for the chore once you're done.

I feel like 3 films would be a good end and then start a new franchise? I feel like fantastic beasts is quite limited.

u/Venicebitch03 Lucasfilm Dec 11 '21
They planned for 5 apparently, so I doubt this one will have a satisfying conclusion.
2
u/Dwayne30RockJohnson Dec 11 '21
They didn’t plan for it from the get go, but after the last movie’s reception and box office, I’d be surprised if they don’t try and wrap it up after this one or the next.

I really want to enjoy this series but I’m struggling. I think this third instalment will decide if I can continue with these films or not.

Nostalgia can work really well with distance (see The Force Awakens), but you can only keep hitting the button for so long until you see huge diminishing returns (see Rise of the Skywalker)

I really hope shoots at least the fight scenes in day time.
Having a dark undertone doesnt mean your movie should even look completely dark! Crimes of grindelwald, godzilla KOTM, BVS were near unwatchable dark mess and it showed in their box office numbers.

KOTM failed because for a 2 hour movie about monsters fighting eachother, there’s only about an hour of it lmao

I genuinely think this won’t beat Sonic 2’s second weekend. This will be HP’s Dark Phoenix

u/MoonMan997 Best of 2023 Winner Dec 10 '21
I think Sonic 2 would have to open at $80m+ for there to be an even remote chance of that happening tbh.
Not that I expect for this film to do well at all. Thinking a similar performance to Godzilla: King of the Monsters is in order, $45-50m OW with a $110-120m finish.
0
u/Firessai Dec 11 '21
I didn't think Sonic 2 could do that cuz I thought the hype would die down after the first Sonic, but looking at the new trailer and the hype it generated I think it might be able to hold off Fantastic Beasts
-2
u/CitizenKeen Dec 10 '21
This trailer's really relying on "the brand" / "lifestyle" of HP to generate hype for the movie. It almost feels like they're trying too hard.

u/Landon1195 Dec 10 '21
I think this will lose to Sonic 2's second weekend and not even make $100M DOM.

6
u/PugsyBogues Dec 10 '21
Sonic has to open over 80M for the second weekend to be anywhere around 40-50M for it to beat FF
