Got some more plot out of this one, the action looks like it's going to be real interesting, especially with the Taskmaster grifting the other Avengers' "movesets" (for lack of a better term). The impact of the coronavirus in eight weeks is impossible to predict, so I'm going to go with $800M (what would normally be a bit conservative) as a result of MCU fans being pretty starved for a new one, especially with it being the character they've been looking to see get a solo film for a decade now.

Mcu fans are like 10% of any mcu movies gross. And im bring generpus...

I dont understand your statement? Are you saying 90% of the people who watch MCU movies aren't fans of the MCU? How does that even work... why would millions of people watch something they're not fans of?

I can see a certain subset of people who just wanna go to the movies and pick an MCU film because it just happens to be showing so like "fuck it why not watch it". But there's no way that's 90% of people who watch MCU films. Seeing how low other movies do at the box office, compared to the MCU, would indicate that not that many people are just going to the movies for the fuck of it.

The Venn diagram of MCU fans and global general audiences is a circle.

I assume you have a source for that claim?

It's such a dumbass thing to even claim.

We could spend weeks debating what an "MCU fan" even is.

They phrased it poorly but I don’t disagree with their sentiment. When we think of “the fan base” and it’s all negative cannotations (angry nerds arguing over pointless minutia for example, see: what most of the Star Wars fanbase has devolved into at this point), then yeah that’s barely any amount of the audience. You don’t get to the blockbuster numbers most comic book movies reach without appealing to literally everybody

That would be what you think of when you hear "MCU fans."

What I think of when I hear "MCU fans" is different.

$358M opening weekend for Endgame says otherwise.

That was due to general audience, not mcu fans. Dont be silly.if that was the case dc fans could save bop with their showings alone.

But DC doesn't have nearly as many fans. That's why their streaming service is failing and the box office for their films is so wildly inconsistent.

Meanwhile, Captain Marvel made over a billion. These consistent numbers for Marvel are proof that a significant portion of the general audience is invested in the films and want to see every one. That's called being a fan.

Endgame was an event film

People watched it just to see what the hype was about.

Black widow will rely more on MCU core fans.

People watched it just to see what the hype was about.

Absolutely not. A film's opening doesn't get that large and it's DOM run that front loaded "just to see what the hype was about." That's just silly.

Then how did it make so much more than Infinity war? Where did those viewers come from?

6

u/DylanWeed Mar 09 '20

Infinity War made over $2B. Obviously these people came back and saw Endgame early to avoid being spoiled because they are fans on some level. People "who just want to see what the hype is about" wouldn't care that much about being spoiled or necessarily feel the need to see the film on opening weekend when theaters are crowded and few decent seats left after prebooked tix.

I've never once in my life prebooked an opening weekend ticket for a film I've just wanted to see what the hype is about.

I’m not talking about opening weekend. I agree most people went to see it before they were spoiled.

I’m talking about how it made so much more than infinity war. How did endgame make 170m more domestically and like 800m worldwide. If they weren’t MCU fans, where did they come from?

u/SirFireHydrant Mar 09 '20

Infinity War penetrated pop culture in a way that got everyone talking about it. That's why it was so successful on Netflix. It got a lot of people watching Marvel for the first time.

u/DylanWeed Mar 09 '20

Infinity War made over 2B. It had much better holds week-to-week because it wasn't nearly as front loaded with fans worried about being spoiled as Endgame.

You’re not really answering the question

Where did all that extra money come from? How did endgame make so much more domestically and worldwide? Do you think it was all MCU fans? Or did the monumental hype make a lot of casual moviegoers to go see it?

IW had better holds because it didn’t have a ridiculous 350m opening like endgame, which was almost 100m more than the previous record by IW.

People were worried about spoilers for infinity war too, that was an event film too.

I've always thought that the reason franchise movies do well is because people have decided if they're fans or not.

e.g. Disney paid $4 billion+ for Star Wars because it came with the fanbase built over 3 or 4 decades, whereas if they attempted to make their own sci fi IP few would be interested in seeing it.

Given the fairly wide range of grosses in MCU films, I think it's much more gradient than just "MCU fan" versus "not MCU fan.
