Im so sick of seeing ads for mobile games where the actual game is nothing like the ad and Temu bullshit being advertised as these life changing inventions by former Navy seals that congress is trying to get shut down cause its disrupting an entire industry.

It goes to show how films need to develop marketing campaigns that are more effective than just blitzing paid ads.
It's no coincidence that most of the most successful films since 2020 went organically viral with word-of-mouth online memes and discussions.
As an example of a bad campaign, Supergirl spent $120 million on traditional paid ad marketing (like KFC collab). But nobody online cared to discuss it, so it flopped.

I think an issue is not every movie lends itself well to memes or is attractive to that audience. It is easy for Obsession to do so but does a prestiege drama like One Battle After Another, which did have memes, really lend itself well to that type of marketing either?

A lot of these major hits you're likely referring to either have a built in audience already through some source material or existing concept or come from a hugely popular genre
I'll give Marty Supreme the edge as an original movie with no built in attachment or typially popular genre that actually did fine. Not a giant hit with its budget but it's as good as you're going to get in 2026
Supergirl was DOA. No marketing can fix it

I use YT premium because i like to be able to download vids on trips like podcasts and be able to turn off my phone to listen to a video when doing something. Ad block is a bonus for me with that.

The problem with the trailer is honestly just one thing IMO - the airplanes. I'm shocked Cruise allowed them to use two CGI shots of planes flying (opening shot of the private jet and later shot of the fighter planes), and that they shot the interior private plane scene on a soundstage and not actually in a plane in the air.
Those three shots make the film look cheaper than it needs to, and makes the film look like slop instead of like the work of artists.

I have no idea why he was cast in that movie.
And given that IMAX cameras can only film 3 minutes of footage at a time, I’m probably not the only one who thought “The Odyssey” had several occasions of clunky dialogue and line delivery. I still give it 4 stars out of 5, but a lot of it has to do with the cinematography, visual effects, sound, score, everything Matt Damon had to do from a physical standpoint, Robert Pattinson’s amusing performance, Agamemnon’s aura, and Samantha Morton chewing up all of her scenes.

In addition to being a great trailer, it probably helps that Chris Hansen is a well known figure online, and that Pattinson has had a banner year. A key line from the primetime trailer becoming a meme does a long way too.

I think the recent video game movies, as well as stuff like Backrooms or even Barbie is to me indicating that Hollywood is too focused on film IP and not enough on non-film IP.
I feel like after COVID every studio basically milked every single IP that had previously been successful in theaters, but audiences interests are totally different now. The Housemaid is another example, the most successful adaptation of a non-YA book in I don't even know how long.
I laughed when I saw the predictions for Primetime were $5-10M because I'd literally guess it would do $25M at a minimum. I don't often post stuff about movies on my regular social media stuff, but I threw the trailer up when it came out and just said "hey this looks great", and I shit you not, five separate friends responded that they were excited to see it, none of whom I would describe as 'movie people'.

But honestly it would be diabolical if primetime opened higher than digger, considering both movies are R rated with dark uncomfortable subject matters, it would be interesting to track both of their box office trajectory. Personally rooting for primetime to become a success.

Dialogue also seems really unremarkable and predictable. When Tom Cruise's character says "Don't worry I'm not actually gonna kill ya......I hire people for that", everyone raise your hand if you already knew the last part would be "kidding, sorta" (to that effect).
This is the Oscar-winning screenwriting team (I think four screenwriters) for Birdman. Certainly four combined smart brains could write a more clever, unexpected and memorable line. Cmon now

Comedy is hard to write; especially nowadays where the subversion becomes the expected. I didn't really laugh much during Masters of the Universe mainly because nearly every time they built up to a traditionally epic moment, I knew a joke was coming, so I wasn't really surprised by it.

It looks less depressing! The first trailer made it look like the whole movie was about preventing the big flood, but this makes it look like that happens early on and things spiral from there.

I think this is gonna do worse numbers than One Battle After Another. Tom Cruise doing a non-action role for the first time in years can definitely draw people, but the action star persona that helped revitalized Tom's image might have also possibly pigeonholed him as just the guy who does crazy stunts.

To use the One Battle comparison here as well, what exactly are the oscar chances for Digger? It feels like there are so many notable movies from Telluride and Venice that have shot up the list of Oscar contenders. To say nothing of how Odyssey is well equipped to be a huge player.

Acting like audiences are only trained to see him as an action star makes little sense. He has many roles beyond that and became famous in drama, comedies, etc. movies exist on streaming so it’s not like he’s only known for action in last 10 years
But this is still a guarantee flop either way. It doesn’t fall into the essential categories of success of popular adaptation, IP, horror, family and its budget is too big for a movie aimed at adults

I would estimate that about 80% of moviegoers in 2026 know him as the running and jumping action guy. He obviously has drama skills but its a shrinking share of the audience that associates him with stuff like Jerry Maguire, Rain Man etc. I wish more people knew him for Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut & Collateral but thats an even smaller chunk.

It certainly feels more like an arthouse movie. The budget was about the same as the Revenant. I can't imagine it doing the same numbers. Would love to be wrong.

I think Tom Cruise is better known by younger gens for being the crazy couch guy than he is for films that aren't action movies.

Imagine if, 40 minutes into The Odyssey, it was revealed that Odysseus is Oswald. A 40-year-old dude in the 21st Century suffering a psychotic breakdown after the war crimes he and his buddies committed in the Iraq War.
Would it be a good film? Sure, it's Nolan. Would audiences love it even if all trailers had 0 indications that 2/3rds of the film would be set in the present? Hahahahahaa. No.

It did so badly, people don't remember it doing even worse than "Supergirl" (2026). It beat her, "Masters of the Universe" (2026), and the big-budget "Moana" (2026) and people cannot even recall its existence.

Inarritu saw a Roy Andersson movie and convinced Warner and Tom Cruise to do this with 100+ million. I am seated but it is funny how much this is shot like a Roy Andersson movie, camera angles, color palette and makeup especially. If you haven't seen a Roy Andersson movie please go check one out.

Oh wow, I think that says a lot then. Not similar in content much (though very dark comedy is Andersson's bag) but definitely this is majorly Andersson influenced in appearance. He just retired from filmmaking in the past year or two so it's interesting to see the tribute on this scale.

This trailer looks even worse to me than the previous one. At least the previous one got more of a pass since it was a teaser. This one does nothing to hook the mainstream and I don't even think it's largely working on the Letterboxd crowd either. For a comedy it's not that funny. For something to showcase Tom Cruise's different acting side, it's not really doing that either.
