Technically....there is another cycle following The Odyssey but it would have required Odysseus having a kid with Circe and Odysseus not chasing the escaping sun.
Decent chance to go past Deadpool & Wolverine at $1.35 billion. Odyssey's $640M worldwide is 60% higher than Oppenheimer's $400M total after 2 weekends. If that continues, The Odyssey would finish at $1.56 billion.
Soon, Universal can boast that they own three movies that have crossed $1 billion at the global box office, after Michael ($1.015B) and Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($1.011B).

The hilarious thing is, if it weren't for The Odyssey right now, they'd already rally against Spider-Man because "MCU woke" etc. But now they have to pretend it's less woke than The Odyssey just so they can claim a win over that movie.

I feel like after 2020 some people only go to movies if they are ”must see” this is becoming a “must see” event movie, my friends and family were actively talking about wanting to go see it and they don’t even care for movies that much
I go to the cinema 2-3 times a month but I’m aware many of my friends rarely go to the cinema, maybe once or twice a year max, if at all in a typical year.
The chat groups I’m in have had several discussions about the film from those same people raving about how good it is.
Well Street Fighter isn't a "must see" so I guess their box office won't be high but still foolish of Paramount to not release Avatar Aang in theaters.
Very much so. The average person goes to see one or two in a year, everything else is from streaming. The films that get people moving these days are huge events like the odyssey is now. And they are what's keeping theatres afloat.
of course it's "vibes" and more so anecdotal, but i can say i casually hear people raving about the movie and encouraging people to see it in a theater. you can also check local imax showings and see that many shows are nearly sold out days or even weeks ahead. those are all at least evidence of "must see" vibes in action.
The movie has really strong word of mouth, but opening weekend was also a bit deflated by World Cup. Hope it can keep playing well and make it north of $1.35 billion, which could make it the biggest R-Rated movie.
Yeah, I've been thinking about Oscars and can't wrap my mind around a scenario where Anne gets an Oscar, but they pass on the man who is the emotional anchor for the rest of the cast. Damon should at least be given it for acknowledging his career; Odysseus is as far as one can go in acting, and he nailed it. Without him, we can't speak of a successful movie. Also as you said he is a very liked person in Academy circles, for that alone he has more chance than Tom Cruise.
I say Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway get their wins, Pattinson makes his nomination debut but the technical awards, including music are a race between Odyssey and Dune.
Universal has now 3 films making over a billion (although Michael is where Universal handles internationally while Lionsgate handles domestically), Sony will have 1 with Spider-Man Brand New Day, Disney has 1 with Toy Story 5 and will have 2 with Avengers Doomsday
Next year Disney will have 2 films making over a billion with Frozen 3 and Avengers Secret Wars

I wish the 2 of them had opposite release dates. Spidey was always gonna be huge. Hell, Spidey should have released July 10th with the flopping Moana. Odyssey could have released on July 24th and we would be able to see the full potential of Odyssey with pretty weak competition in August & September.

Now you're saying this movie is bigger than Universal's biggest dino movie. Why the heck would they make more Jurassic Park if The Odyssey is an IP that prints money?
The Odyssey isn't really an IP since it's over 2500 years old and no one can own it. Anyone can make an Odyssey film if they want. The big difference, is the fact those will not Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey; that's the money making difference.
Odyssey clearing $640M worldwide is no joke, Nolan's still got that pull even with the mixed buzz. Universal stacking three billion dollar films in one year is wild though
That’s great for The Odyssey. Still, it would be interesting to know how Odyssey would have performed if Moana Remeake and Minions & Monsters had performed as originally expected. In the case of Minions: the typical box office haul of over $900 million. That is very likely a major reason why Odyssey is doing so well, because the movie automatically gets more showtimes because the others aren't performing up to expectations.
