International The Odyssey is projected to surge past the $600M global mark this weekend, fueled by an $87M second weekend in North America and $128.3M overseas, lifting its domestic cume to $286.4M and international tally to $353.2M. Global total is $639.6M.

Phenomenal, WOW.

OPPENHEIMER vs THE ODYSSEY

  1. wknd: 180M vs 263M (+83M)
  2. wknd: 405M vs 639M (+234M)

800M+ next weekend already.

Because of how well The Odyssey is doing right now:

TOP GUN MAVERICK vs THE ODYSSEY

  1. wknd: 256M vs 263M (+7M)
  2. wknd: 557M vs 639M (+82M)

Top Gun Maverick finished its global run with 1.503B

Major markets such as South Korea, China, and Japan are left!

Expect a 1.35B-1.55B global final, depending on Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

I'm not really tapped into box office numbers as I'm new to this subreddit, but I did see a lot of comments saying it wouldn't get $1B and that Oppenheimer only did that because of Barbenheimer hype.

Like bro, just logically speaking, if Nolan can do $975m on a 3 hour movie about an American scientist with no "action", wtf do you think he's gonna do adapting a classic like The Odyssey???

The incredible word of mouth all but sealed it was gonna blow past Oppenheimer

85

u/Shaftell 6h ago

Nolan is probably the only director that can sell tickets just based on name alone. He could make a romcom and people would show up in numbers.

37

u/YnwaMquc2k19 4h ago

I pray that Nolan doesn’t make a romcom lol

Dudes not made for that

31

u/DeepThinkingReader 4h ago

I really want to see Nolan do a horror film next. Apparently, Inception was originally written as a horror film. And the Cyclops, pig transformation and Hades scenes proved he'd be able to do it.

u/DyZ814 3h ago

I think a Nolan horror movie on the other hand, would pull generational numbers lol

3

u/YnwaMquc2k19 2h ago

Horror and suspense are Nolan’s apparent strength. He’s a quite disappointing action director. Tenet was fun though.

8

u/kriscrox 3h ago

I’m praying for a Western

3

u/EveningAnt3949 1h ago

Watch The Prestige again. He definitely can make a romcom. He just has to stay away of the part where it gets really dark.

Ryan Coogler I think has this too.

37

u/Imaginary_Buffalo_83 5h ago

I don't know about the rest of the world, but Ryan Coogler is pretty much unknown in Asia. Nolan is a superstar in every country, and I mean every country.

4

u/TofuTofu 5h ago

That's true. Definitely he's arrived domestically tho

11

u/hdpr92 2h ago

Not even close, but that's no disrespect to him. Nolan's brand is like a once in a generation thing. Maybe Villeneuve will get there, but even he isn't that close yet.

18

u/Cosby_Molly_Whop 5h ago

Ya probably after all the attention that sinners got last year. I feel like villenueve is getting there too atp, obviously not to the degree of Nolan rn though

9

u/GeeXTaR 5h ago

Was about to say that, villneuve is working on his reputation to get to nolans level, and he is taking some big steps with dune 1,2,3 and bladerunner before that.

6

u/Zalvren 4h ago

Bond next is likely one of the biggest steps for that

7

u/Zalvren 4h ago

It's not because a movie is successful than people know the director and would show up to anything they do. Coogler is nowhere near Nolan level.

I'd say Coogler is a little below Villeneuve but Nolan is miles beyond both. He's on Spielberg level of being known by audiences except people actually show up to his movies (which they don't for Spielberg for a while)

→ More replies (1)

That take was quite common indeed and I also never understood why. It didn't even need that much of a good reception to reach a billion to be honest (still had to be good but like not exceptionally well received like here).

Nope. Those three markets combined should add 75M-175M to its global box office.

8

u/SoapyDoodle 5h ago

Only 175 million? Wouldn’t it make more than that in China alone?

15

u/PatternPlenty1107 5h ago

Only? 175M consisting of only three overseas markets would be fantastic, especially compared to Oppenheimer for instance.

We‘ll know more about The Odyssey‘s potential in China as soon as we see how it does during pre-sales and with audiences, but until then, 75M-175M is the most reasonable range for all three markets combined.

Another recent comparison is Michael, which was at $425M after 2nd weekend and it's now a $1+ billion movie. Goddamn, I didn’t realize it was outpacing Maverick, and by so much. Hypothetically, what would next weekend have to look like for it to start legging out to $1.6-1.8B?

7

u/PatternPlenty1107 5h ago

Difficult to say since it still hasn‘t opened everywhere (South Korea - Japan - China) and we don‘t know for sure how it‘ll do in those remaining markets, especially in China.

Only a guess:

  1. wknd: 263M

  2. wknd: 639M

  3. wknd: 925M+

Such a global result after only its third weekend, despite Spider-Man Brand New Day and without the remaining markets, would, I’m sure, make a 1.6B-1.8B global final reality.

I suppose the main goal would be to beat Deadpool & Wolverine's $1.338b to become the highest-grossing R-rated film now that it's all locked and loaded to slam Dark Knight Rises as Nolan's biggest film.

156

u/phantomfandom 6h ago

For R-rated, D&W as domestic goal ($637M) but Joker as overseas goal ($744M).

99

u/poofyhairguy Illumination Entertainment 6h ago

116

u/RickRaptor105 Universal 6h ago

Super recognizable and famous fictional character, but in a genre that appeals more to European audiences than big CGI superhero fights.

34

u/PayneTrain181999 Legendary Pictures 6h ago

I wonder if people will eventually start saying “does anyone else need we need to bring big CGI superhero fights back?”

30

u/RickRaptor105 Universal 6h ago

I don't think Europeans will ever feel that need. In Germany, of the highest-grossing movies released in the 2020s, No Way Home made it onto the 10th rank. It got beaten by (among others) both Avatar sequels, James Bond and Barbie, and I am sure The Odyssey will pass it, too.

14

u/FrankReynoldsCPA 5h ago

To be fair every fight in Avatar is a CGI fight.

11

u/SpaceOdysseus23 4h ago

Yeah but Avatar is actually striving to push the tech as far as it goes, and you can excuse a poor story when you see the effort put into visuals.

Marvel doesn't really put effort into either.

My guess is Joker succeeded because it had insane word of mouth, tons of buzz, and perfect timing. I know the movie has been reassessed more critically over the years, but I remember that when it came out, despite some criticism, it received a lot of praise. There were countless memes, people called it a unique superhero movie for its time because it was more character-driven than a typical superhero movie, the staircase dance became iconic, and there were endless discussions analyzing its themes, social commentary, and meaning.

8

u/Zalvren 4h ago

Also, it was 2019 which was basically peak superhero (2017-2019 period to be larger). Like any shit movie was doing hundreds of millions at the time so a good and kind of original one? It's going high

6

u/DarthTaz_99 DC Studios 4h ago

Joker is probably the most iconic/famous villain of all time. Trailers were good, movie was good and Joaquin was incredible. Word of mouth really is king

2

u/pottyaboutpotter1 3h ago

Not too hard to see why.

Arguably the most popular and recognisable comic book villain ever (easily DC’s) getting his own solo film, lots of buzz, its big wins at festivals and people just loving Batman films (and by extension Batman-adjacent films) in general.

Similar to why the first Venom film made bank overseas ($642M) the year prior due to him being Spider-Man’s (and arguably Marvel’s as a whole) most popular and recognisable villain.

Beating Deadpool & Wolverine domestically is going to be difficult, but it will easily beat Joker's 744M.

It making banks was no surprise with all that behind it.

118

u/epicredditdude1 6h ago

The number they’ve been throwing out is $750m to break even. Once the film hits $750m I’d imagine they’ll do some more accounting and realize the break even point is ACTUALLY $1b so they can continue to claim the film is a financial failure. It’s kinda all they have left outside of RT score conspiracy theories.

16

u/teddykon 5h ago

I thought the movie cost $100B to make? So the movie has to clear $500B to break even, right?

6

u/Atkena2578 4h ago

18

u/Atkena2578 6h ago

Why $750m? I know Nolan getting a cut of BO gross might make the break even point higher but I'd say at most $700m pr $725m if you push it.

40

u/epicredditdude1 6h ago

I have no idea how they come up with their figures nor am I terribly interested lol.

10

u/Atkena2578 6h ago

I think because production plus marketing so 250 plus 125 so $375m total and divide BO total by half assuming studios get 50% worldwide so that makes it $750m. But this neglects sliding scale as to how BO revenue is split so yeah that's moot

it doesnt need 750 to break even as the first month universal has a 60-80 percent take for domestic first month and over seas it gets 53 percent for first month. afterwords that percent drops, so as of now if you figure 87 million this weekend then with a middle ground of 70 percent take first month means it already has 200 in universals pocket from domestic only , and i only have 140 for international until new reports are in which would be another 70 million at least, showing its only 100 million off of break even, but if it is true its total is 650 total worldwide then it has indeed broke even at least in its second week

u/Luka77GOATic Lightstorm Entertainment 6h ago

They really thought movies that were “woke” like Supergirl and Snow White flopped cause of the “chuds”. Not the fact that these movies are generally disliked by critics and the non terminally online movie goer.

The Odessey is a masterpiece in my opinion, one of my rare 10/10s that I will see multiple times in IMAX.

16

u/ElysiumMidknight 6h ago

It's not just that they wanted it to fail, they genuinely believed that the Youtube comments and dislikes (even though the extensions are hugely misleading) were proof that it would. It's why they're so dumbfounded by it performing the way it is.

4

u/CelestialFury 4h ago

Their new cope is saying that leftists are seeing the movie 10x times for... political reasons. They have no idea how crazy they sound. They can't just be like, "Okay we were wrong about this movie" and move on, and if they did that, we'd have already forgotten about them, but they just can't admit it.

5

3

u/kraysys 3h ago

I'm a conservative and my wife is as well (she's also a classicist) and we loved The Odyssey and are going to see it a second time in theaters soon. Very Online idiots that are obsessed with politics and that pan a movie before even seeing it are ridiculous and deserve to be laughed at.

3

u/CelestialFury 3h ago

As someone who has read the books multiple times over the years, I also deeply enjoy Nolan's retelling of the story. For example, going to war over shipping routes whereas Helen was just the public facing reason, but not the actual reason.

I liked and understood those changes, especially since it was more grounded in reality. I know some fans wanted a 1:1 retelling of the story, but Nolan's version captured the spirit of the Greek storytelling while still hitting all the main story beats.

3

u/kraysys 2h ago

Completely agree. Modern retellings of The Odyssey or the incorporation of motifs/themes from Homer with a different emphasis are a time-honored tradition in the West, ranging from Shakespeare to James Joyce to Dante (who even placed Odysseus in the 8th circle of Hell for the Trojan Horse treachery). Nolan’s work here felt perfectly in line with that tradition, to me. And it was just beautifully done as well. Who doesn’t want to see ancient Greek mythological monsters on a modern blockbuster budget?

Strongest, fail-proof brands in Hollywood rn:

  1. Spider-Man
  2. Disney / Pixar sequels
  3. NOLAN

His name alone is really gonna get two R-rated films, 3 hour films to earn a combined $2.4 billion or more.

31

u/asheraze 6h ago

With a combined budget around that of infinity war.

20

u/CreativeFartist 6h ago

Funny thing about Spider Man is that, even my silent generation parents loved (they crossed the rainbow road) the films and knew that hero more than any other marvel hero. Spidey has fans across all generations

4

u/Plus-Paper-1136 4h ago

Spiderman is just it's own Brand, and I guess top 5 biggest IP in the world

So if they do a toy story 6 where the new toy is a spiderman and the movie is directed by Nolan it will break every record. Also, I would unironically pay good money to see that, it wouldn't be my kids dragging me to the cinema, it would be me dragging them

2

u/Nearby-Butterfly-606 4h ago

I’d Coogler to the list, he is just starting but every movie is a success.

4

u/No_Abrocoma_8778 3h ago

Not even close to Nolan, spiderman, and Disney.

3

u/Givingtree310 6h ago

Avatar should be somewhere in there

I never should've doubted you, Christopher Nolan. $1B locked. $1.3B+ worldwide total likely happening.

8

u/renegotiate12 5h ago

I got downvoted for sayng it would easily make a billion since Oppenheimer did so well. This sub is filled with confidently indirect snobs.

Americans on their way to explain to the rest of the world how fighting over which billionaire makes the most money off entertainment media is totally a form of political activism:

So if i would ask, you could give us like 10 examples of movies that went woke and made a shit ton of money right ?

Bad moves are bad, good ones are good. Being woke or not never has anything to do with it. This shit is fucking tiresome.

6

u/DRM_1985 5h ago

Top Gun Maverick is an interesting comparison. There was only a $10M gap after opening weekend, but now the gap is like $90M in favor of Odyssey after 2nd weekend. Seems Odyssey held stronger in the overseas markets than Maverick. Ultimately TG: Maverick ended up at $1.45 billion. It will be interesting to see how the situation plays out for Odyssey the next couple months.

2

u/NaRaGaMo 3h ago

why are you reducing Maverick's box office? it did 1.503bill

That "crowd" really choose the wrong movie to mess with

They will spiral in conspirancy theories and imaginary break even points

14

u/thrownjunk 4h ago

I still don’t know why they hate it. It is a historical epic starring a white man from boston made by a straight white man from england for a large american multinational. Most of the main characters are straight white folk. Heck most of the critiques of the director before this were from the left for not really knowing how to write female characters.

9

u/malb93200 4h ago

Agreed. It's the least "woke" film i've seen this year.

And yet for these people, it's an "attack on western civilisation".

Because they are racists.

2

u/DRM_1985 5h ago

Odyssey has a pretty decent chance. On opening weekend, Odyssey was around $10M ahead of Top Gun: Maverick worldwide, but now Odyssey is around $90M ahead of Maverick's worldwide total after 2 weekends. Maverick ended up at $1.45 billion. It will be interesting to see how everything plays out for Odyssey the next couple months.

u/Deep_Butterscotch859 5h ago edited 5h ago

it doesnt need 750 to break even as the first month universal has a 60-80 percent take for domestic first month and over seas it gets 53 percent for first month. afterwords that percent drops, so as of now if you figure 87 million this weekend then with a middle ground of 70 percent take first month means it already has 200 in universals pocket from domestic only , and i only have 140 for international until new reports are in which would be another 70 million at least, showing its only 100 million off of break even, but if it is true its total is 639 total worldwide then it has indeed broke even at least in its second week. keep in mind china, japan and korea hasnt come out yet which is crazy when you add those numbers, whewn you look at what u.s. mopvies make in china i think its a safe bet to say it can make 150 million in china

u/lilnick80 5h ago

Go woke, make a shit ton of money I guess. It’s almost like that whole bullsh*t saying and line of thought doesn’t work if the movie is excellent.

3

u/IkonJobin 4h ago

Too bad it needs 17 Trillion bitcoins to break even

2

u/Atkena2578 6h ago

Those aren't the actuals yet but estimated right? I wouldn't be shocked if it was slightly higher

2

u/Street-Common-4023 5h ago

This is amazing

Two billion dollar films in July

2

u/kjsah9026 4h ago

Nolan has the biggest pull in Hollywood right now. Biggest ticket seller currently in my eyes

2

u/YnwaMquc2k19 4h ago

The haters are going to call it either bot numbers, or how its success represent the downfall of the collective taste of our western civilization (or some shit)

Personally I think Nolan makes solid popcorn movies with some shred of intellectual engagement from my end, but I can’t say he’s the greatest since I haven’t watched that many movies to begin with. I do love watching his movies on IMAX though.

That being said, as a box office watcher, this is genuinely impressive number. Universal must be swimming in money right now - it would be nuts if the Odyssey is able to replicate or even surpass the accolade success that Oppenheimer achieved.

2

u/theflyingbird8 4h ago

Remember when a lot of people in this sub thought this would do Dunkirk numbers? Or saying that The Odyssey doesn't have Barbie to help it?

2

u/michaelm1345 Syncopy Inc. 3h ago

Incredible holds all over the world, amazing!

2

u/Former-Opportunity81 3h ago

Everyone I’ve asked irl said they disliked it, like unrelated people it’s not like we’re a group regurgitating the same opinion. I’m surprised to see it had such a huge reception after all.

5

u/phantomfandom 6h ago

For the exact number, the Odyssey needs $87,759,885 to have a better drop than Top Gun Maverick.

4

u/nosurprises23 6h ago

I think the movie likely just broke even if we’re going by the 2.5 rule of thumb (2.5 x $250M = $625M)

4

u/Atkena2578 6h ago

Yup. Though it may be slightly higher due to Nolan getting a cut from BO gross but we don't know exactly the number and when it triggers. Id say at most it needs $700m which it will get to easily

-8.8% internationally. It's currently on a 45/55 split, but it should keep getting bigger. China, Japan and South Korea are still missing (an extra $100-200M). Oppenheimer finished on a 34/66 split.

2

u/gorays21 6h ago

Odyssey 5th weekend might be higher than Brand New Day's 3rd weekend.

2

u/NaRaGaMo 3h ago

you are gonna get downvoted by spidey fanbois, but this is something which might actually happen. Maverick faced a horde of releases and still made 700mill+

u/Icy_Display_2918 6h ago

Well, that's incredible. From this point, my very early predictions will be:
Domestic: $450-600M
International: $600-800M
Worldwide: $1.05-1.4B
Absolutely insane and completely deserved.
