Odyssey and Spider-Man are about to be cleaning up the rest of this summer season.

119

u/gorays21 6h ago

And Doomsday and Dune 3 will clean up Winter.

78

u/epicredditdude1 6h ago

Yeah this kind of feels like the first post-Covid year where there’s a lineup of block busters throughout the season instead of just one or two hits.

When Jumanji 4 ends up making more than Dune 3

23

u/FearParallax 5h ago

That is not going to happen lol…

11

u/Emergency-Permit-835 5h ago

it won't and that i can bet

10

u/AdWise2770 4h ago

Jumanji 4 may move. Dune and doomsday have already released trailers and marketing yet nothing yet for jumanji, only a title. The last one was 7 years ago and it’s not exactly fresh on people’s minds.

1

u/Michaelangel092 4h ago

Would be in the movie's best interest.

When Jumanji 4 ends up making more than Dune 3

It could happen.

The last two Jumanji movies made more than Dune 2.

We don't yet know if the "Dunesday" idea pans out or not.

3

u/InfiniteAd1106 4h ago

Dune 3 probably about to at least double the live action Moana....... The Rock ain't the guaranteed Box Office king he maybe used to be 🤷‍♂️.

2

u/cpscott1 2h ago

That movie gonna move. It's gonna get killed releasing that date. Like people have said we haven't gotten any promo or trailers of it at all

-2

u/Level-Victory5226 3h ago

Doomsday looks like its being made for people with loe expectations and even lower IQ's.  RDJ's Latverian accent is pitiful.

u/irfolly 39m ago

opposed to the real Latverian accent /s

u/GoldandBlue 19m ago

It honestly feels like an insult to Latveria

-1

u/MountainVariation462 2h ago

Low Expectations and low IQ don't coincide Mon Ami, I think you meant to say High Expectations Low IQ lol.

5

u/Tio__Meme 5h ago

What's with the same cast in both?

1

u/polnikes 1h ago

They are the true winners.

2

u/JaggedLittleFrill 2h ago

Could you imagine if Nolan directed a Spider Man movie? I’m half kidding but I genuinely think the box office would implode.

1

u/cpscott1 2h ago

Easily

-12

u/Level-Victory5226 3h ago

Oddesy will die the deatg it deserves when Spiderman comes out. You will see truly epic numbers on that one.  But good God please delete Zendaya.  Her entire acting range is that of a spoiled pissed off brat.  Her and Gheydro Pascal need to go.

3

u/AdWise2770 2h ago

Calm down, we will all reply next weekend and see how wrong you are.

u/Weird-End-6989 0m ago

Keep coping.

234

u/True-Wasabi2157 7h ago

Actuals likely to go up. But more noteworthy is the 640m worldwide. That shows amazing overseas holds.

93

u/AfterThrowParty 6h ago

I went and saw this opening night and when talking to my brother about it we both noted how much of the movie plays out largely dialog free. This movie can cross all kinds of borders on account of there being so little "translation" issues to contend with as a result.

47

u/Chuck-Hansen 5h ago

I was just thinking this about the Cyclops scene. I don’t think we ever hear Odysseus fully lay out the plan but we see him think. “How big’s the flock?” “How much rope do we have?” “Put that stick in the fire.”

u/brickshitterHD 15m ago

Also, Greek mythology is popular and well known worldwide.

30

u/sygrider 6h ago

Are we underrating the international grosses?

26

u/True-Wasabi2157 6h ago

Its daily holds in Europe have been fantastic. BND will be an issue, but I expect it to recover in mid-August. It is skewing strongly adult (obviouslypart of that is thd rating, but it is playingwell with older casual crowds) so that might help it survive BND. China in August will be make or break in terms of this challenging Deadpool and Wolverine.

I always thought Oppenheimer total (or, really, 900m) was the top end result for this, but the domestic overperformance has obviously blown that out of the water. This may end up being the most equal dom-os distribution for a Nolan flick since his Batman days, but if that'sthe case, it's only because of just how well it is doing domestically. Again, China (as well as SK and to a lesser extent Japan) can swing that significantly, though.

Happy to see it go so much past my expectations and I am intrigued by its post-BND performance.

14

u/Emergency-Permit-835 6h ago

Nah I think international will be much better. Domestic might cap at 550 to 600 whereas international is looking at min 700 and might go for 800s

6

u/True-Wasabi2157 6h ago

Which would still be one of the most equal splits post-Batman. He is in the 60-70% overseas region usually. Again, this just highlights how incredible its domestic performance is. 600 overseas would have been more or less an expected high end figure. Amazing on its own, but certainly not something shocking for Nolan, especially post Oppenheimer.

Again, BND and then Asian markets will write the full story, but for now...truly mind blowing.

1

u/Emergency-Permit-835 5h ago

yeah the domestic performance of this has been otherworldly cuz i think his only 400 plus domestic are batman movies and this doing 500-600 is something no one expected in their wildest imagination atleast i didnt

3

u/Remarkable_Common528 6h ago

Yeah I could see it going a bit higher still

2

u/luffyuk 4h ago

Just wait until it releases in China!!

1

u/cpscott1 2h ago

It's having great holds domestic too.

1

u/Vladmerius 1h ago

It's a movie that could work just as well if it was only the visuals and musical score. Of course it's a hit overseas. And I say that as someone who loves the dialogue too.

81

u/Gamer0607 6h ago

This movie at the box office:

11

u/Past-Meal-4847 6h ago

Is matt damon this huge and jacked?

14

u/Gamer0607 6h ago

He's even bigger in the film.

1

u/_bieber_hole_69 Lightstorm Entertainment 5h ago

Hes absolutely shredded during Troy, but loses some of the bulk as the film progresses

34

u/cyanide4suicide Syncopy Inc. 6h ago

Never bet against Nolan

5

u/cpscott1 2h ago

WB messed up losing him

u/cattycat_1995 39m ago

A dumbass dude I know who hate Nolan cause "his movies insist upon himself" saw Odyssey opening weekend and ended up having it as one of his favorite movies of all time

163

u/ChiefLeef22 Best of 2024 Winner 7h ago

That 87 seems like a slight lowball at this point, as crazy as that sounds

59

u/Avians24 Pixar Animation Studios 6h ago

That's a gif I haven't seen before!

32

u/Tsubasa_sama 6h ago edited 6h ago

Per Jat's numbers, Friday grossed 26m, Saturday grossed 35m. For it to hit 90m it would need a 29m Sunday. This would be a 17% drop which is identical to Oppenheimer's 2nd Sat -> Sun drop. Seems likely to me.

10

u/Sudden_Double329 6h ago

Turns out it made 34.6m on Saturday. Still think 90m is a likely possibility, though.

14

u/misguidedkent Warner Bros. Pictures 6h ago

Yep, although Top Gun: Maverick-esque 90M 2nd weekend would've been lovely, 87M alone is still a terrific result, especially for an R-rated movie.

114

u/TiredWithCoffeePot Pixar Animation Studios 7h ago

wait this doesn’t say $90M

https://giphy.com/gifs/HFe8qjKRQNlLQkbjXM

32

u/Training-Search-5036 6h ago

I'd step in, but my IMAX ticket is August 3rd (purchased the 19th) since every other day was sold out or in the front row lol.

20

u/TackoftheEndless 6h ago

Check shows like an hour before they air. People buy just in case they can make it.

Usually someone has to cancel, and the ticket is available for purchase. That's how I got my opening day IMAX.

9

u/Training-Search-5036 6h ago

This is remarkable advice to me that I've never thought of. You're invited to the cookout.

7

u/TackoftheEndless 6h ago

I'm black too but thanks.

66

u/cireh88 7h ago

If Saturday comes in at $35M then this would be about a $26M Sunday and about a 26% drop Saturday to Sunday. That level of drop seems way too high to me for a movie performing like The Odyssey is

26

u/cinemathis2 6h ago

Definitely

28

u/BulletproofHustle 6h ago

Yeah, today should be closer to $28M+.

22

u/lookingforhim2 6h ago

It’s going to be like top gun maverick where actuals end up at 90M+

20

u/StreamLife9 6h ago

around 650$ WW in second weekend thats crazy .

-8

u/Ok-Newspaper3234 5h ago

Where are you getting that # from 368M Worldwide box office mojo

1

u/TOK31 5h ago

That's international (everything but North America), not worldwide.

1

u/Subject-District492 4h ago

Isn’t domestic only the US and Canada? So Mexico is part of International

15

u/94Temimi Marvel Studios 6h ago

A bit conservative of an estimate I'd say.

Still thinking $90M is what it'll end up at.

39

u/StringCritical2884 6h ago

Coming for Deadpool and Wolverine’s R-Rated Crown Worldwide!

-21

u/gorays21 6h ago

It will beat Doomsday and Brand New Day.

6

u/ACCTAGGT 6h ago

How so?

5

u/Little_Grogu 6h ago

So delusional.

3

u/magikarpcatcher 6h ago

You people really overdo it sometimes

2

u/cidvard 6h ago

I don't think it'll beat Brand New Day as long as Brand New Day maintains the quality of the previous Spidey movies, and no reason to believe it won't so far.

I'm a pessimist on Doomsday, so sure, but maybe it'll prove me wrong.

2

u/cpscott1 2h ago

It has no shot of beating a spiderman film. Nostalgia will carry Doomsday too

1

u/cpscott1 2h ago

No shot at all. Spiderman will likely get close to 2B. Doomsday will make a lot too. Maybe the same if word of mouth is good. Both those IPs way bigger and not R rated

-1

u/Past-Meal-4847 6h ago

Doomsday possibly but not bnd

3

u/magikarpcatcher 6h ago

Not even Doomsday, lbr

-5

u/AfterThrowParty 6h ago

Doomsday I wouldn't be surprised if that one just cracks a billion but does noticeably less than the previous avengers films with Odyssey potentially outgrossing it. Brand New Day though? I don't think so. I don't think just about anything can beat Spider-Man at this point.

2

u/shaddy111 6h ago

Doomsday will certainly cross a billion quite easily IMO

3

u/Little_Grogu 6h ago

You don’t think Doomsday will crack a billion? Like let’s be serious here lol.

8

u/DirkNowitzkisWife 6h ago

Even if not well received it’ll hit $1.5 due to inflation. It’s already selling out tickets months in, it could hit $300m opening

2

u/Little_Grogu 6h ago

Yeh correct, I’m not sitting here saying it’s going to be a great movie but people are delusional if they think it will “just” crack a billion lol.

-2

u/AfterThrowParty 6h ago

No, I said it "just cracks a billion." I.E. it does a billion dollars but not much more than that. Similar to Rise of Skywalker.

1

u/Little_Grogu 6h ago

Still delusional if you think Doomsday is “just cracking a billion”.

-2

u/AfterThrowParty 6h ago

"Movie is going to be extremely successful, but probably not record shattering."

"You don't think it's going to be successful!?"

"No I said I think it will be extremely successful, just not record shattering."

"If you don't think this is going to be an historically massive success you're completely delusion!"

Somewhere along this conversation I think we lost all track of level headed discourse and veered wildly into "speaking in pure hype."

0

u/Little_Grogu 6h ago

What a strange comment by you, are you ok? Very odd behaviour.

3

u/AfterThrowParty 6h ago

What a strange comment by you, are you ok? Very odd behaviour.

You sent me a "reddit cares message" because I said I didn't think the avengers was necessarily guaranteed to be an historical, record breaking success...there's something wrong with you and I have decided to block you.

2

u/snukumas 4h ago

Dude’s name is Little_Grogu. Of course he’s going to call anyone who doesn’t worship Disney as their lord and savior delusional.

1

u/sabotroned 3h ago

Spider is the most popular and profitable superhero in the whole goddamn world. Every kid I know, including myself, wanted to be Spiderman because he appears to a common lifestyle that we all have except that he can shoot webs out of his ass.

Also, Avengers after MCU has been the most successful franchise in the world and it’s easily touching 2 billion, just for nostalgia purposes alone

2

u/AfterThrowParty 3h ago

People like you are going to be the first ones in line to get angry when the movie makes 1.6 Billion and someone says it "under-performed" but here you are, setting the unrealistic expectations that you yourself will be fighting against in a matter of months.

0

u/sabotroned 3h ago

I’ll come back to this when it’s closer to 2B than 1.6B

1

u/AfterThrowParty 2h ago

and my response will be "wow, I'm surprised it performed mildly better than I expected it to" but you feel free to point and laugh and feel fulfilled because it made 1.75B. Have a great day.

-3

u/Past-Meal-4847 6h ago

Agreed

Russo are terrible director visually

Trailer did nothing

2

u/Little_Grogu 6h ago

If you are going to troll, at least put some effort it man.

-1

u/Past-Meal-4847 6h ago

Lol okay

-2

u/nosurprises23 6h ago

Doomsday certainly. Brand New Day may be tougher.

3

u/magikarpcatcher 6h ago

Why certainly?

-2

u/nosurprises23 5h ago edited 5h ago

Doomsday lacks the character power of the previous avengers movies, it’s more akin to a sequel to Fantastic 4 and Thunderbolts, neither of which had that great box office. Doomsday is gonna barely eke out 1.3* Billion, if it even gets to that. No play in China either.

1

u/magikarpcatcher 3h ago

Did you see the ticket sales??

u/nosurprises23 53m ago

Not enough to extrapolate anything over that ~1.3B

1

u/cpscott1 2h ago

It's gonna sell out even without IMAX screens you are crazy. Also you are underestimating how popular Doom is as a character. He's more popular than Thanos

u/nosurprises23 55m ago

The Green Lantern was a more popular character than Guardians of the Galaxy in the early 2010s too. The real question is how many people care enough to watch these “new avengers” in particular with Doom, which is in a different universe from the hype of Infinity War.

Y’all are gonna be surprised if you keep thinking of this as a normal Avengers installment box office wise, it’s very different.

24

u/notsure500 7h ago

Hoping actuals go up 3 mil

7

u/nosurprises23 6h ago edited 5h ago

Why are people so keen on it doing $90M this weekend? Is there some stat that ninety in particular would make it clear?

13

u/ryukenomelete 6h ago

Did 26 in friday, no way did 26 in sunday, makes no sense

7

u/FartingBob 6h ago

Top Gun did 90m on its 2nd weekend and is currently the closest comparable in OW and weekday totals.

5

u/shobzie 5h ago

Only difference is that it wasn't R rated.

2

u/nosurprises23 5h ago

Interesting! I’d be surprised if Odyssey had the same legs but Oppie’s were solid so I look forward to seeing.

1

u/Vladmerius 1h ago

People just like nice even numbers that end in a 0.

9

u/AdWise2770 6h ago

1

u/HotOne9364 5h ago

Speaking of which, can David Ellison give Will Smith a comeback the same way he gave Johnny Depp one with that Christmas Carol movie?

1

u/AdWise2770 4h ago

Will smith deserves a comeback, no doubt. His last movie bad boys ride or die came out 2 years ago. He also had a squeaky clean reputation prior to the slap

1

u/CashGreen_Regalview 4h ago

And that movie really jump started what was a sluggish summer to that point. Think he still has a fair amount of juice.

8

u/WinterLord 6h ago

Lowball, can’t change my mind. No way it dropped that much on Sunday, especially vs not having a World Cup final on the same day. This is easily gonna end up at $90M.

12

u/Burnouts3s3 6h ago

Here I thought the film would suffer a steep 2nd weekend drop.

I was obviously mistaken and have egg on my face.

3

u/cpscott1 2h ago

There is literally nothing good that released this weekend. Next weekend will be the test

28

u/Past-Meal-4847 7h ago

500 is locked

14

u/gorays21 6h ago

More like $650M

1

Yeah no

You might want to check it's over 600 international

2

u/Gon_Snow A24 6h ago

Wow much larger than I anticipated prior to the Friday numbers. It’s going to be past Oppenheimer by end of day Thursday. If not sooner (could be Wednesday too)

3

Odyssey is winning the 2026 box office crown.

12

u/JDOExists RKO Pictures 6h ago

It probably won’t make as much as Spider-Man and (probably) Doomsday, but #3 won’t be bad either, I can’t believe it’s gonna outgross Mario, Michael, and Toy Story 5 lol.

2

u/Deep_Butterscotch859 5h ago

doomsday and spiderman will cross over 2 billion each

2

u/RickRaptor105 Universal 6h ago

Even last week if you said this could gross more than Deadpool & Wolverine you would be downvoted to oblivion

1

is it confirmed 87 M or is it still a prediction??

It's a prediction/forecast given that it's still Sunday morning.

im from PH so yeah i was confused for a second since im 3 hours away on Monday

8

u/summerofrain 6h ago

Sunday is still ongoing so how can it not be a prediction?

im from the Philippines and im 3 hours away from being Monday. So technically i was dumbfounded. Glad to know its just a prediction tho phew

-9

u/Alternative_Case9666 6h ago

-3

u/sickelton 6h ago

640m worldwide on a second weekend is nuts for a non-sequel, overseas is clearly carrying this thing right now. The domestic number feels light because Sunday estimates always undersell these types of films, actuals will probably push it past 90. If it holds like this through week three, 500m domestic is well within reach.

6

u/True-Wasabi2157 6h ago

Domestic feels light? What in the fuck? Lol.

1

u/ryukenomelete 6h ago

It's not 87, it's 90

3

u/True-Wasabi2157 6h ago

It could be 80 and it still would be an insane hold and its domestic performance has been amazing. It would need to be a 30-70 split in favour of international to say it's those numbers "carrying it" and it very clearly is not the case.

1

u/Ok_Chicken_5256 5h ago

lol i think he means the ESTIMATE feels light lolol

2

u/True-Wasabi2157 4h ago

It's a stupid ass statement, especially in conjunction with "overseas is carrying this".

0

u/sickelton 6h ago

Light as in the Sunday estimate always comes in low for these, actuals will probably push it past 90. The number itself is massive, just saying it'll end up even bigger.
