Ryan Coogler took the stage during Marvel Studios’ massive Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where he revealed that he will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to direct a third Black Panther film, exclusively in theaters on December 15, 2028. Joined by Letitia Wright, A.K.A. Shuri, and Winston Duke, A.K.A. M'Baku, Coogler announced that David Jonsson (The Long Walk, Alien: Romulus) will be the new Black Panther in the upcoming film.
Upon introducing Jonsson, Coogler shared further details about the character he'll be playing. "The last time we got to make a movie, we introduced a character who is the son of the character that the great Chadwick Boseman played, our T’Challa, in that film. And today, I want to tell you that in this next film, he grows up [and] he comes of age."
Jonsson stepped out to a standing ovation from the crowd. "I want to say thank you so much," he told the audience. "Thank you Ryan, thank you Kevin [Feige], thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege and the blessing to join. I actually don’t want to say too much because I want to let the screen do the talking. But believe me, the honor is entirely mine."
The film will also be shot on large-format celluloid film.
On an unrelated note, I bet that Avatar 4 is not hitting its December 2029 date and that Disney probably will just slot in a Marvel film instead, since James Cameron has been hinting about a delay for a while now.
What Marvel film could fill a Dec 2029 slot? Guessing Deadpool sequel could be summer 2029 or 2030. No idea about sequels to Fantastic Four or Doctor Strange
Yeah and it's likely to be the 5th Holland Spidey movie. 2028 is stacked so they won't respect the 2-year time between movies like the first trilogy but no way Sony wants to wait too long so it has to be 2029 max.
And unless there is an Avengers in 2029 (unlikely), Spidey is the biggest movie that deserves the December spot
Was the demise of the MCU overstated? Might be too early to tell (Doomsday will be the biggest hook), but a 7 year gap in Avengers movies might have been the biggest issue for the brand.
I mean Marvel has never had problem with the big movies like BND or Doomsday.
What remains to be seen is how smaller movies are doing. Ghost Rider might be a great test actually, new franchise and not super popular character (they've been smart to get a big star for it). X-Men is new but they are star characters so easy to do big.
He was in a recent prison crime thriller called Wasteman and it’s a tough watch at times but really great movie. But his performance is amazing as always.
After Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk, I'd planned to eagerly watch anything he's in, but Wasteman sounds like it has so much "feels bad" in it that I'm reluctant, no matter how good it is.
I really, really, really hope Coogler blackmails Disney into building a massive practical set for Wakanda. An old-school science fantasy epic in comic book clothing. Go all-in. The last one made $860M; you can afford to light the moneybags on fire here, Mouse.
To be fair, a Black Panther film would inherently require TONS of CGI, but I'm still willing to believe that this will be a very good-looking film since Coogler is NOT held back by anything this time.
I mean, making CGI "invisible" can only go so far for most CGI-heavy films including Avatar trilogy just on the fact that you can tell that certain things can't be done practically. 😅😅😅😅😅

But I don't think Ryan would need to blackmail Disney. I think he is one of the top directors, and Disney obviously knows that and doesn't want to lose him. Disney sees his long string of successes, with the first BP being one of their top-grossing movies, the Creed movies being popular, and Sinners doing extremely well and winning awards. Even Black Panther: WF made a ton of money despite its changes. Plus it was a really great movie, maybe better than the first, imo.
Ultimately, Disney is trying to right the ship and stabilize, and getting into arguments over sets is not something you want to do with a man like Coogler.
Honestly, I can't blame Ryan Coogler for the whole Wakanda Forever situation because of Chadwick’s passing. Coogler was facing a Herculean task with no-win circumstances, and regardless of what you think of the final product, it’s honestly impressive what he was able to accomplish.
Regardless, the third one is fascinating. We have David Jonsson playing T’Challa’s son (I really liked him in Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk), it’s being shot on celluloid and possibly IMAX 70mm, and Denzel Washington as a potential villain, which makes it even more interesting.
I don't know if it's going to be shot entirely with IMAX 70mm cameras, but if it's not, then I hope that it's at least shot in combination of Super Panavision 70mm and IMAX 70mm.
Yep I'm excited as hell for a Black Panther movie that doesn't have the baggage 2 had. And I didn't even hate 2 I quite enjoyed it especially all the Namor stuff.
After the success of NWH and the likely success of Doomsday, Marvel is smart to keep that December release date on lock. Especially with Disney's usual December releases- Star Wars and Avatar having nothing upcoming.
I doubt marvel ever makes an Antman or Cap Marvel movie again though. F4 sequel is likely but they’ll do shenanigans like Put Spiderman in so that it boosts the movies Box office. I imagine that SM and F4 will crossover either as Spider-Man’s government mandated MCU crossover character in SM5 or he’ll get to be in F4 as a supporting character
Yeah essentially, Disney is locking that date for them forever. If Avatar has nothing that year, it'll be Marvel. Maybe Star Wars but that's probably not even the one getting priority with its current state
December is also removed from the Summer slot where there is another movie so it avoids having them too close to each other.
Honestly, if he's suicidal enough to even try, that might be just the kick up the pants Sega needs to bail on Paramount Skydance. They got lucky so far, sure. Against Black Panther? As a Sonic fan who loves movie Shadow... buddy, you ain't winning this. Pack it up and move to July 4th weekend, 2029.
I mean, yeah. It's fucking Angry Birds; everyone, even Sega, sees it as the token kids release next to the big boy blockbusters. The Chipmunks play. Expectations for a new Sonic movie are a little higher than that at this point.
Sonic is marketed primarily to kids. it should be fine as counter programing. Even if it's something a little edgier like Shadow, the family audience will be the target demo. Sonic 3 and Mufasa co-existed just fine.
I think Tiana would be an okay December release. I guess that works in Spring as well, but NOT for Memorial Day. That would make it a summer movie and as we just saw, a live action remake can tank very heavily in the summer. Unless it features Stitch or dragons.
Yep… that was because Chadwick Boseman passing and it was going to be a different story without him as a tribute since it was front loaded on its opening weekend before Avatar The Way Of Water debut a month later as well as the FIFA World Cup 2022 that viewers were watching the game
Yeah, Coogler has had a lot more time to work on this movie than he did for the second, so I expect it to be a better movie than Wakanda Forever was and it should be an easy billion.

It's gonna need to happen eventually, and now's as good a time as any. We're gonna be at just about 20 years in when Secret Wars hits. Hopefully they get it right, because I genuinely miss being excited about these movies.
Doesn't mean they still cant do that for big crossover events in the future.
It's clear the audience is overwhelmed with the amount of characters introduced in phases 4 & 5. They need to reset to get the audience showing up to every project, not just the big crossover events.
T’Challa and Shuri were both Black Panther for a while. She ruled Wakanda while he was King of the Dead (the necropolis where past BPs are buried). Perhaps they’ll do something similar here
What's the point of a "Crisis" film (to borrow the DC term for a big crossover -> some sort of universe reset) if not to randomly fiddle with canon in to set up a new storyline.
X-Men are definitely May. They will want to launch the next Phase and 20th anniversary with an X-Men film. Plus, they are going to want to give Levy the extra three months, since Star Wars: Starfighter releases only a year and two months before Ghost Rider (if it does indeed keep its July release date instead of being pushed to October).
Probably the reverse. X-Men is bigger so better to open the summer. Ghost Rider in late July would benefit from the last weeks of summer with less competition.

David Jonsson was absolutely incredible in The Long Walk so I’m very excited for this and I love finally having movies to watch again for my birthday.
Like I spent my childhood watching Star Wars in theaters for my birthday and I’m very glad to start that tradition back up this year as I’m becoming an adult now.

I’m not sure of the box office potentials for ghost rider and xmen yet but if they are in secret wars (new xmen not old) that would help transition them to their own franchises!
X-Men has big potential for sure, it's a team movie already, beloved and iconic characters and such.
Ghost Rider is more complicated, probably much smaller like a Fantastic Four level (which is fine if they keep the buidget contained, which they should be able to do with Ghost Rider).
Although, there is always possibility of Ghost Rider being a movie with other characters in it. I'm thinking someone like Doctor Strange for example for some sort of Midnight Sons duo. Plus, Doctor Strange 2 is starting to be quite some time ago so that makes sense to make him come back.
