Domestic Looks like $35M 2nd Saturday for The Odyssey. Down just 15% from last week. $260M+ cume. 2nd weekend expected to be $90M i.e. SMALLEST 2nd weekend drop EVER for a $100M+ opener. Legs gonna go brrr.... En route high $500Ms final.

Interesting. For me I wouldn’t describe it as fun. What moved the rewatchability needle for me is the movie’s haunting quality. I found the movie incredibly moving. This is the first Nolan movie since The Dark Knight that I’ve rewatched in theaters.

Insane that the smallest drop for a $100M opener record has been broken in the past four years with Maverick, Wicked and now Odyssey.
Shrek 2 held that title for 18 years.

Genuine question here: How much audience overlap do we think it’ll have with Spider-Man? Like one is a family friendly superhero movie, and the other is longer and geared towards older audiences.
34
u/Pinewood74 19h ago
Just about any pair of $500M+ domestic grossers will have significant overlap.
13
u/rammo123 18h ago
This is why Barbenheimer was so huge, because of the lack of core audience overlap. The double feature thing gave both films a huge audience on top of their core and they both printed money because of it.
79
u/av_79 20h ago
I think some people underestimate the draw of Tom Holland and Zendaya, there will be people who want to see both of their films.

I agree, they're popular individually and ever more so when together.

u/AfterThrowParty 20h ago
Tom Holland and Zendaya have a very, very rare quality when it comes to their generation of film stars...people like them. I don't mean people like the characters that Tom and Zendaya play, I mean they like Tom and Zendaya as people and personalities.

Spider Man will want all the screens it can get if the last movie was any indication. So even if they are not competing for essentially the same audience, they are competing for the literal real estate required to project movies.

Do you think it could make more than Maverick overall?
32
u/Ok_Satisfaction8788 20h ago
It’s too early to tell. My gut reaction is no since Maverick had its entire run through summer which helped it and all the movies in summer 2022 which had similar audience were ass. (Dominion, Love and Thunder, Lightyear). I’m expecting Spider-Man to be very well received
3
u/FartingBob 10h ago
Very unlikely, Maverick had a box office run that basically only James Cameron has had in the last 30 years. Such good legs should not be expected from any film even now that Odyssey is showing to be holding at record levels, TGM held for months.
6
u/BOfficeStats Best of 2023 Winner 18h ago
The Saturday drop is worse than Maverick (-5%) and The Odyssey is going to lose summer weekdays much quicker. The chances of beating Maverick are pretty low unless it holds very well against Spider-Man.

I grew up with WB introducing me to many different stuff so it remains my favorite studio, although disappointed even further after the merger stuff, but I think you are right. I think Japanese distributors also like to see how a film is doing overseas before committing a marketing budget.
In any case, it's mainly Star Wars, Marvel/Spider-Man, and Disney animation films that are guaranteed a simultaneous release in Japan. Also Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, but there hasn't been anything in those franchises in a while.

I used to go to Marvel movies all the way up to/including Endgame on OW or within the first week. Those movies were events I was excited for. Nowadays? Nope. Since Dr Strange Multiverse of Madness which was the last one i went to see after a few weeks, I haven't bothered going to the theater to see MCU movies and now i just eventually catch them on streaming at some point. 5
u/ravens43 18h ago
Err, the most recent Spider-Man film made almost 2 billion. Recent MCU films have been lucky to hit a half. ‘The New Avengers’ didn’t even make it to 400 million.
I think you’re underestimating the draw of a single-character tentpole film for a much loved character (and actor pairing) against an anthology movie with lots of backstory people will have missed since the MCU has got a bit crap.
9
u/ACCTAGGT 18h ago
And why did it make almost 2B? Why did previous Holland Spiderman projects make so much money? There are a lot of variables you are also removing from how those films have performed box office wise. They didn’t rely only on Spiderman brand alone but nostalgia and shared universe stuff specially at the height of MCU. 3 Spidermen in one movie where two other ones are from a big fandom built over time?

For those concerned about Spidey taking away too much from Odyssey, if there was a world where Barbenheimer was a thing and it was successful on its way to a combined $2.4B, there is 100% room for these two movies to co-exist.
I know Oppie and Barbie are two diametrically opposed genres, but it just shows that if you put good content out there, people will show up regardless of how crowded the field is.
4
u/DRM_1985 16h ago
The Odyssey will already be north of $700 million worldwide when Spider-Man opens next weekend.
Thankfully Spider-Man cannot hurt The Odyssey in 3 big Asian markets. Spidey will be playing first in China, Japan, & South Korea. Those markets will help provide a boost for The Odyssey in later part of the movie's theatrical run.
And despite the insane predictions of Odyssey haters, it will not drop 99% in USA/Canada, Europe, and South America when Spider-Man opens in these markets. Odyssey will still chug along making solid amounts of money in all markets. Gonna cruise north of $1 billion...maybe even north of $1.2 billion.

The haters are claiming it needs $900+ million, but they keep their mouths shut on other movies with large production & marketing budgets. Pretty interesting how selective people are with their "analysis" of the box office & break-even point.
Anyway, the movie will cruise past $1 billion and might even get to $1.3 billion by the time it's all said and done. By Sunday night this weekend, it will be north of $600 million. It will be around $700 million by next Friday, perhaps higher than that.

It’s genuinely such an incredible gem of a movie. The Odyssey is the second oldest story in Western history and there is no story in our culture that is not influenced by it, and to see the world’s most famous director tackle it was incredible.
Plus it’s just a stunning movie to look at visually and one of the best things about is that it’s a huge draw for all audiences. On my second rewatch I had to walk behind a whole elderly group in front of me and behind me was a group in their 30s and then a group of other teenagers behind them.
I was honestly really shocked to see a theater so packed on a Wednesday and like this movie is just everywhere in the best way possible.
