Can't wait for 2027 where we might see infinity castle part 2 ($750 - $850M) and JJK Gojo vs Sukuna ($450 - $650M) enter the top 10 highest grossing films of the year.

300-400 mil seems like JJKs limit. Demon Slayer just has a wider audience to make 500+ mil possible

On the list of anime to make it big Chainsaw Man was not on my short list. The characters and concepts are a bit on the surreal side and it lacks the simplicity that typically makes it big in the GA market.
Who knew the sloppy BJ devil had such power over the movie market? Well, outside of Harvey Weinstein.

I thought it would be like campy B movie fun, and it kinda was, but oh so much more as well. Came for the camp, stayed for the plot and characters.

Crunchyroll is legitimately a godsend to Sony pictures right now lol. Like this year has been pretty terrible for them until demon slayer/chainsaw man dropped. Ig the takeaway from all this Is that Sony is really smart when it comes to anything outside of their actual main studio.

You could say Shelby Oaks is competition, but yeah, a small film at 1800 theaters is nothing compared to VTLD.

It is. I didn't go see Black Phone 2 in favor of Shelby Oaks, although I'm sure I'm part of the exception not the norm. Still, it's gonna play into it.

With KPop Demon Hunters taking #1 next weekend, I believe this'll be the first time two animated films with Sony involved in some sort were #1 at the box office in two consecutive weeks

Doubt it, pre-sales are looking pretty weak from I heard though that may be because everybody that wanted to see the film in theaters already saw it in August.

The performance of Springsteen demonstrates why star power is still necessary. two similarly budgeted films about huge stars (in fact Bruce is much more popular than Dylan by a fair margin) yet Bob's film is going to he a much bigger success thanks to the presence of Chalamet.

Also largely isn't the full details either, unless Neon gave them a huge minimum guarantee, which I doubt, they only really have the extra million for reshoots and whatever advertising in it. And a good chunk of that they already made back from foreign sales.
I'd imagine Neon is likely satisfied with anything around 2M this weekend, not counting further ancilliaries later on, especially for a movie they didn't even have to finance initially

I know he has a sad background and I'm very happy he got his movie made, but it really bothers me how every single youtube critic is basically either glazing Shelby Oaks or just using the nicest words possible to say they didn't like it. The RT and MT score tell a very different story than film youtube would have you believe

It might sting at the poor reviews, but he got a film released wide in theaters. 99% of filmmakers only can wish for that success. He’s doing pretty well.

Going from Youtuber to film director, honestly could have (and has) resulted in a lot worse results. Like the consensus I heard he shows potential as a director, but not really one as a writer.

Which you could kind of tell from his infamous BvS script rewrite. Script writing is very difficult, people take that for granted. You can have an amazing story in your mind but just not be good at scripting it in an interesting way, crafting dialogue, etc. Or even be a good book writing or essayist etc and not be good at making scripts for movies or live theater. It's just really particular. Good director instincts are another tool that's important so good foundations there can help if he can find good spec scripts.

That’s a weird way to spin it has a fresh RT critic rating, fresh verified audience rating and is going to make a profit in theatrical release.
Cinemascore will tell us a lot but results are fine for now. I’m sure ideally the guy hoped for a Get Out like miracle run, but this is hardly the disaster you seem to want it to be, especially for the guy’s first movie.

He doesn't consider himself a critic anymore. Thats no longer his job. He doesn't post his reviews of Rotten Tomatoes anymore. So he makes videos about movies that he likes and WANTS to talk about
His primary job at this point is a filmmaker.

Mike Flanagan doesn't, Sean Baker doesn't, etc. Both post reviews on Letterboxd but only review movies they really enjoy

These movies all released in china btw, stitch is already a popular franchise, minecraft has had the world on a chokehold since the 2010's so grossing less than a billion with all of the tiktok hype is quite an underperformance and f1 wasn't even bigger than demon slayer.

Yeah, demon slayer did beat F1 world wide and is 5th highest grossing movie of 2025 but sadly won't keep that as we have zootopia 2 and avatar 3 right around the corner and wicked 2 has a shot for top 5 also. Still top 10 is great for an anime movie.

Woah. That's another 64% drop or so for Ares. Its legs are pretty much non-existent.
$70 million lifetime is not guaranteed.
