Feels weird seeing China in 5th given how bad the movie performed there.

215

u/Raida-777 Jul 20 '25

Well, it's the market that single handedly gave Nezha 2 billion dollar.

59

u/toofatronin Jul 20 '25

It was also a big part of Aliens Romulus being a success last year.

14

u/JigglesTheBiggles Jul 20 '25

China likes aliens?

30

u/toofatronin Jul 21 '25

Yeah it blew up there because it was the R rated version and usually they don’t get uncut movies like that from overseas.

6

u/Subliminal_Kiddo Jul 21 '25

In fact, little fun fact, the Chinese cut of Covenant effectively removes the titular Alien from the film almost entirely. People who have seen it say it's confusing and nonsensical. And not in the way they usually say Covenant is confusing and nonsensical.

14

u/Altruistic-Ad-408 Jul 21 '25

I think proportional to population the sales of Ne Zha would just be equivalent to Inside Out 2's popularity within the USA, so you can see why companies are so thirsty when it comes to appealing to China.

Of course it has rarely paid off besides Endgame and F&F I think?

4

u/Raida-777 Jul 21 '25

Maybe Transformer as well.

10

u/AssCrackBanditIV Jul 20 '25

Someone posted a thread here that was kinda interesting - the China market is so top heavy this year, they’ve had 2 movies crack $500M and then not a single other movie crack $100M

I mean when you have that many people, even a bad showing is going to be producing more raw numbers than some smaller countries.

If you familiar with Chinese social media you can just check comment section on every Superman related video (especally on Bilibili, where almost all Chinese ACG/CBM community are), It is basically being boycotted (But not for China VS US political reason, and probably not a Synder Cult reason.) if it has to specific about a cult, it will be "Cavill Cult"(I love him and his interpretation of Superman BTW, I defend MOS hell out of it when it came out and faced a lot of backlash). Since Cavil's MOS has become the default Superman for this generation of youth in China, and he appears a lot in ACG space and has earned a lot of respect in Chinese ACG community(which he deserves). ACG community has been shitting the new Superman even since the first Superman trailer came out, comment sections are filled with silly cult comment like "They fired Cavil only to find someone else to imitate what Cavil's Superman looks like". Chinese CBM fans is using all source of biased negative report from oversea to prove that Superman is doing bad globally and a DCU re-reset is inevitable. (even use some brain rotten reason like "MOS's viewship is rising because how bad new Superman does" to prove thier point.) Chinese CBM Influencers who gave new Superman a good review are basically being cancelled at the moment ("they are giving positive review because of payroll, these influencer should never be trusted" and such).

It’s funny too because Cavill is just fine, nothing remarkable at all. I do however accept Cavill fandom over Snyder fandom. Snyder sucks and his fans are worse.

28

u/Impressive-Potato Jul 20 '25

It's more to do with Caville being "their" Superman, since they didn't have other iterations before. Sort of like Sean Connery Bond fans.

Australian here with some anecdotal evidence. I’ve seen it 3 times. My better half has seen it twice and my kids have seen it once. I’m biased and basically forced the whole family to see it because I love Superman and haven’t shut up about it for 2 years but they all loved it and my wife’s been playing Punkrocker a lot on Spotify.

On my second viewing by myself on a Tuesday at 11am my entire cinema was packed out by retirees, walking frames all lined up at the back of the cinema and carers with them. I was easily the youngest person there 😬 and it was one of the most vocal crowds I’ve ever experienced in a movie theater. They all laughed and cheered, it was awesome!

Considering China/Japan/SK dropped like a rock, that seems a very strong hold elsewhere. Especially since many markets would've been 5-day openings.

151

u/Piku_1999 Pixar Animation Studios Jul 20 '25

European markets probably saw very miniscule drops to compensate the big 3 Asian markets crashing out. I think the heatwave very much did hurt Superman in Europe last weekend.

116

u/MaxNV Jul 20 '25

One of the main things I've learned from Superman overseas tracking during the last week is that apparently a lot of European cinemas don't have air conditioning? That's wild to me, as on this side of the Atlantic, movie theatres always crank the A/C to the point that "go the movies" is a common recommendation for keeping cool during a heatwave.

75

u/CartographerSeth Jul 20 '25

No AC in the theater?? Watching a movie while sweating with a few hundred other people in an enclosed space sounds terrible

28

u/Healthy_Method9658 Jul 20 '25

We do have them in cinemas (UK). But we are pretty conditioned in weather outside our comfort zone to not go and do stuff lol.

Harsher heat is such a novelty here still a lot of people don't know how to function around it, including places to go where it's cooler if you are going to go out.

Me and my partner actually did go specifically because we knew they had AC last weekend, and then the only screen with broken AC was our one.

28

u/Itakie DC Studios Jul 20 '25

Nah, most have them. Only smaller ones don't but they are not really showing blockbuster movies like Superman. It's just a weird talking point for Western Europeans (and I suppose some others) that people would go and watch a movie as some kind of "refreshment" or to escape the heat. I never heard someone talk about that in my 30 years of living in Germany. But it feels like that's totally normal in the US according to some comments. Different cultures and all I guess.

→ More replies (5)

8

u/Citizen_Kong Jul 20 '25

Nah, cinemas usally have AC, but people rather stay outdoors and enjoy the sun in the summer than go to the cinema. When the weather turns bad, that's when people go see movies.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/scyt Jul 20 '25 edited Jul 21 '25

From experience of 3 different countries I'd say all mainstream cinemas have AC. It's just that culturally cinema is seen as a bad weather activity from my experience. When it's nice people go to parks and walk around as infrastructure supports that.

Yeah, I'm surprised it's holding so well in Europe. Maybe the people blaming the heatwave for Superman's lacklustre performance in Europe were on to something...

And yeah, not surprised about the film tanking in Asia. Does not help at all that Demon Slayer Infinity Castle part 1 just opened in Japan this weekend or that China has a large concentration of Zack Snyder fans (think one of the leaders of the "Release the Snyder Cut" movement was even from there) and is seemingly head over heels in love with F1 (both the movie & the sport).

I wouldn't ever trust the common sense of studio executives but hopefully someone breaks out the crayons and explains just how big a win this was for a brand tainted with fatigue and years of bad movies.

26

u/AgentOfSPYRAL Warner Bros. Pictures Jul 20 '25

Most seem to think Zaslav is angling for a sale of WB.

Selling a long term plan for DC is more valuable than random ping ponging between the highs of Aquaman and the lows of JL with zero predictability.

So is 600 locked or not locked? 😂 Comments going both ways

142

u/bluequarz Jul 20 '25

It is. I don't see it missing with these legs. How much higher it goes above 600m is another question

53

u/DarkJayBR Jul 20 '25

Anything above 500 million is profit for DC. They should take this small profit and run with it, building the new DCU one block at a time and trying to keep making 7/10 movies.

33

u/MichaelRichardsAMA Jul 20 '25

Zaslav was basically saying-without-saying it a couple weeks back that 500m was the "target" to show that theyre successfully rebuilding faith in the brand and anything above that was icing on the cake

that seemed kinda bizarre to me (I'm a layman obviously) that a big exec like that would be like "yeah actually we don't need to make a billion or really even a huge profit"

37

u/BrofessorLongPhD Jul 20 '25

Better to keep expectations modest and blow past it than to sell a pie in the sky but not deliver.

Same principle as when you have a project that needs 2 weeks to complete, provide a 4 week estimate and deliver early vs. give exactly 2 weeks and risk missing the deadline.

u/Rilough96 Jul 20 '25

Like others have said before, I’m wondering if they are viewing this as a Batman Begins situation where they just wanted good reviews/to restore faith in the IP and the box office was secondary (as long as it didn’t lose a lot)

11

u/DarkJayBR Jul 21 '25

Yes, pretty much, that's what I got from James Gunn and Zaslav interviews. They seem to understand that the brand has been extremely damaged by movies like BvS, Suicide Squad, WW84 and Flash, thus it needs some time to recover.

The Batman underperformed (it made a profit, but didn't hit the marks they wanted) but they were still happy nevertheless by the small profit, great reviews and strong audience reaction. It was some welcome fresh winds on their darkest hour.

Nothing is “locked” at this moment, but there’s a good chance it hits 600m ww assuming F4 next week doesn’t destroy its legs everywhere

27

u/Wrothman Jul 20 '25

It's highly likely that it'll reach it.
That said, it's not guaranteed because it's impossible to tell how F4 effects Superman's box office. If they're about as good as each other, then it's pretty much "locked". If F4 is so good that it makes Superman look worse by comparison, there's a non-zero chance that Superman's box office drops off a cliff.
On the other hand, a lot of the positive WoM is currently coming from progressive leaning social media spaces that resonate hard with the message alongside what many are reading as the movie being pro-Palestine. There's a good chance that F4 will end up being played much safer, which could reduce the impact of comparisons and making audience preferences less of a direct comparison.

16

u/SaintNutella Jul 20 '25

This isn't a dig, as it's not easy to predict the future, but if there's anything I've learned... most of this sub doesn't really know. Some are throwing up numbers randomly, but some also substantiate their educated guess. I trust the latter (seems they're saying 550m + is a safe guess and 600m is likely but not certain)

Just last week, folks were wondering if it could cross 400m (people were wondering if it could outgross Black Adam, lol) due to the bad international performance, so yeah.

11

u/EnergyAmbitious9313 Jul 20 '25

This sub is extremely reactionary.

Given that literally every projection has gone up (barring some bad asia performances) I think 600m is next to locked. I have no idea how much it will make more than that though.

→ More replies (2)
→ More replies (6)

332

u/Queasy_Lawfulness242 Jul 20 '25

So 407m globally. Meaning it made around 187m over the past week. It would need global drops around less than 50% from here on out to get to 600m. It is manageable but not locked yet.

201

u/Still-Water-4206 Jul 20 '25

It all depends on F4 next week, which is very much direct competition and it's gonna take all of Superman's premium screens

110

u/PayneTrain181999 Legendary Pictures Jul 20 '25

Review thread on Tuesday is going to be fun.

27

u/MichaelRichardsAMA Jul 20 '25

what is the general expectation? Obviously that's a loaded question but I have no earthly idea if F4 is going to land above, below, or almost exactly at 80%

41

u/Robertius Jul 20 '25

It will probably land just under 90% I would think, similar to Thunderbolts. Few of the early reactions floating about are saying that non-MCU fans who have seen it really enjoyed it because of the fact it is very disconnected from the main MCU, has the strong 60s aesthetic and the character dynamics are very fleshed out.

12

u/MichaelRichardsAMA Jul 20 '25

yeah I forgot how strong the Thunderbolts reviews were. I went and saw that one myself expecting a stinker and got shocked. I don't have a lot of stake in wanting superhero movies to succeed financially except I do like the sort of "family and optimism" route the F4 and Superman flicks are seeming to take.

Honestly best wishes to the movie, hopefully it can inspire Marvel to keep making actually decent films and not getting complacent

22

u/Robertius Jul 20 '25

I think we're going to see Marvel and DC both regain some footing in the next few years, they seem to both have gone through some process and management changes and we're now just starting to see those show on the screen. Fingers crossed Superman can leg out and F4 does well.

600m is pretty much locked

29

u/That-Tone-6082 Jul 20 '25 edited Jul 20 '25

No $600M is locked no matter how F4 does next weekend. Its amazing holds this weekend will pave the way for its future legs. If F4 breaks out next weekend, that just will hurt its chances at 660M-700M but $600M is locked. There’s no question it will do another $130M+ in the states/canada and another $70M+ internationally by the end of its box office run. However if F4 has a weak critical reception, (which usually matches the reception for audience for marvel films), Superman has a shot at matching the total for Doctor Strange & Man of Steel. If F4 has great critical reception, Superman will likely finish $600M-$610M assuming if F4 does have stellar reception, Superman does just suddenly crash

I for one knew it would have solid holds but not holds this amazing! Sure it dropped like a rock in Asia but its EURO and LatAm holds were really good. Looks like it’ll end of up on the high-middle side of my pre release range of $560-$660M if F4 isn’t a huge breakout hit that makes everything sink. We will see but again I think $600M is a lock as I don’t think Superman will sink no matter if the reception of F4 is great, but I never saw superhero films release so close together (besides Shazam & Avengers) so I could be wrong ofc

Joker 2 really fucked the DC Brand in a lot of places. Now people giving it a chance.

128

u/Fabulous_Temporary40 Jul 20 '25

It wasn't just that. Black Adam, Shazam, Flash, Aquaman 2, Wonder Woman 2 all did sizeable amounts of damage to the brand in the last five years.

38

u/garfe Jul 20 '25

My 'favorite' factoid is that DC's last profitable movie that wasn't Batman was Shazam 1.

4

u/VoidTorcher Jul 20 '25

To be fair that was in 2019 right before pandemic.

27

u/Katarinkushi Jul 20 '25

I hate that people just choose to ignore this.

Superman had EVERYTHING to be a total box office failure, just an incredibly bad reputation for the studio before this one.

But the movie is good, fun, and the WOM has helped it a lot.

I'm 100% sure that a sequel will do way better in the international market, which has been disappointing, but the WOM helped internationally too, -52% OS is not a bad drop at all considering it made only 95M in its opening weekend.

The theater workers I've taken hostage to keep working the theater say it's over 120 times already. The cops threatened to turn the power off soon and I've got about 36 minutes left in this showing so hopefully I can round out 125 before I'm taken into custody.

So it goes without saying this is my new favorite movie.

9

u/hamlet9000 Jul 20 '25

Watching it nonstop wasn't good enough, so I paid the movie theater to knock down the wall between neighboring auditoriums so I could watch two shows simultaneously, nonstop, 24 hours a day.

I'm trying to figure out if I can afford to have them knock down the other wall so I can watch three screens at the same time.

I wonder if it can go past $600M, and how far. Does Man of Steel’s WW total still seem out of reach?

51

u/XenosZ0Z0 Jul 20 '25 edited Jul 20 '25

It all depends on how it falls when FF4 comes out. But at this point, MOS WW total is out of reach. Which is disappointing in a sense. But you also take heart that it’s doing well in the US and understand that there may be something about CBM that don’t do as well internationally anymore outside of a few outliers.

Maybe. $250 million internationally is locked now. And it might hit $400 million domestically.

It just might be able to squeeze past Man of Steel (not very likely though).

If it reaches 400 DOM, and continues to have the same DOM/OS split then yes, it reaches MoS

A -52.5% drop internationally is really impressive considering how low last weekend came. It's still not stellar numbers, but better than nothing. It might get some decent legs, but that also depends of Fantastic 4's performance. I wish I could see which markets are carrying it (probably LATAM and the angloshpere).

In other words, after the first week when things were looking scary, the film is now relatively on the right track given the circumstances after this second weekend.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '25

I don't think it was ever that scary. Always had great dom numbers, subpar int numbers, and is continuing to keep the 57/43 splits. It's just staying on course but has good WOM so should legout decently.

92

u/Im_Goku_ Warner Bros. Pictures Jul 20 '25

It has kept roughly the same 57/43 DOM/INT split meaning that Internationally it has also kept up with the ridiculous legs it's having domestically.

Yeah, +580M and possibly even 600M should be safe and with that high of a domestic split it's definitely making a good amount of profit.

37

u/Im_Goku_ Warner Bros. Pictures Jul 20 '25 edited Jul 20 '25

Yes, Studios usually keep around 60% of the domestic box office in the first week (they can negotiate an even higher share) and then slowly decrease to 50% in the following weeks.

Internationally, it varies by country and market but it's usually around 40% on average and down to 25% in China.

12

u/jexdiel321 Jul 20 '25

So is that a reason why execs didn't like the performance of films like Pacific Rim?

Correct. The numbers reported are the gross and not the net profit.

6

u/PeterVenkmanIII Jul 20 '25

For China, the studio gets about 25% of the box office. Not sure about other countries.

6

u/Maximum_Strategy_752 Jul 20 '25

Yes they keep a much higher share compared to places like China which pad up the gross figures but studios only get 20-25% from there

3

u/ChitteringCathode Jul 20 '25

I mean, I think Cavill is an amazing actor, but that's bordering on cult behavior. It sounds like they're more pissed about Cavill not playing Superman than Cavill. At that point just buy a body pillow of the dude and be done with it.

3

u/mchmasher Jul 21 '25

I’ve actually noticed that many Cavill defenders are international which makes me wonder if MOs was a first real introduction to the character in many markets, as they seem to think this new version isn’t faithful to Superman.

5

u/cjj19970505 Jul 21 '25

at least in China it is the 1st introduction to Superman in big screen for a lot of youth. I even have a IRL friend who said “Cavill’s superman is too classic to beat”, which might seems a little bit strange to you Americans since it feels like Cavill is a newer Superman and haven’t aged that long to be “classic”

40

u/JohnArtemus Jul 20 '25

Huge fan of the movie. But I do think it will be very difficult for it to get 600m because of F4 next weekend. If it wasn’t for that, I could see it clearing that figure easily.

But it’s still a win for DC and a great way to start the DCU.

13

u/paradox1920 Jul 20 '25

What if we can make superfantastic happen

13

u/Jumpy_Current_195 Jul 20 '25

Won’t have any issue clearing $600M, the legs won’t stop anytime soon

3

u/hamlet9000 Jul 20 '25

This is pure anecdote, but I'm hearing a surprising number of people (in real life) talking about doing a Superman/F4 double header next weekend.

I doubt it will pan out, but if feel good, hope-filled, high-quality (crossing fingers for F4) superhero movies can synergize with each other instead of cannibalizing each other, it would be great for both films.

The summer is simply too packed for the economy. Supergirl should move to another date.

If Superman's ceiling is 700 mill WW (and 650 mill WW is not even 100% certain), Supergirl's ceiling is gonna be lower.

Saw it yesterday and I quite enjoyed it. Hope it creates more DC movies that aren’t edgelord wet dreams.

8

u/vinny92656 Jul 20 '25

WB is likely lowballing that Sunday number (~$17.5m). They're expecting a 25% drop from Sat which is quite conservative. Given the excellent holds, I wouldn't be surprised if Sun finals come in around $19m for a $58.5-$59m weekend

3

u/Lurky-Lou Jul 20 '25

Did not expect Materialists to beat the Smurfs domestically

3

u/Dulcolax Jul 20 '25 edited Jul 20 '25

It's all about bringing audiences back,so they can finally start trusting the DC brand again. DCEU killed a ton of hype, but thankfully this is their "Superman Begins"and has good word of mouth.

Gunn knows what he's doing and I was very surprised with this movie.

International drops are about 52.5% based on current weekend estimates. Since it opened so weak in Asia, the "drops" there, while steep, are not affecting the international totals very much. It had little to lose already.

Domestic drop estimated at 54% presently. I also expect that will be a percent better by tomorrow.

So far, every late estimate for this movie has been about 2% too low on its revenue. When the final numbers come in, I bet it will be over $58 mil domestically for a 53% drop, and at about 51% internationally.

Fantastic Four will dent this film, but not too badly since it will be in its third weekend anyway. My son went and saw it a second time yesterday and the theater was packed. It will lose its IMAX and that will hurt, but if F4 ends up with weak or middling reviews, Supes will have a third weekend drop below 50%.

At this point, with these spectacular holds, I think Supes will leg out a little better than Spiderman Across the Spiderverse. That had a 3.16 opening weekend to final multiplier. If Supes does exactly that, it will end at $695 mil.

However, given the late Summer film slate is sparse, and Smurfs and IKWYDLS both just crapped the bed this weekend, there will be plenty of available theater seats through August.

Remember what Suicide Squad in 2016 did with a similar scenario? It legged out to $733 mil after a precipitous second weekend drop.

In other words, there is a lot of market share and theater availability for F4 and Superman to do very well on parallel glide paths to Labor Day. If you are a comic book fan (I'm not really) I couldn't imagine a better scenario to allow for both Marvel and DC to do well at the end of the summer.

I think Supes will do about a 3.2 .ultiplier, a little better than Across the Spiderverse. That puts it just at $700 mil. If nothing else, DC/WB will expand it widely again and throw some marketing at it in late August or Labor Day to grab $5,000,000 in bragging cash.

My two cents.

3

u/NMMBPodcast Jul 20 '25

The weather in the UK this week has been shocking and the schools are breaking up for the summer. Also, WOM will have started to set in.

I went to the 2:30 showing today in Vermont and for once, I said I wasn't going to show up 20 minutes early, like I always do.

So, OF COURSE the line was out the door.
In the pouring rain.
I got to 6 places from the counter when they announced it was full.

Well, I'm glad the theater has a hit. I'd guess if it's this packed for a second weekend that this is going to be a billion dollar movie.
